Liu Fu Jie had a lot of questions and he was sure that he won't be able to find any answers by himself so the best choice right now for him was to sneak around and observe this man called Xiao Jingyi who seemed to be shrouded in mystery.
This man just broke him out of prison and was talking to the guards who were after the prisoners. There was no way that he was a simple character.
"Elder Dayu, we can't find them anywhere!"
Xiao Jingyi simply nodded as he heard the man speaking with a clear sense of nervousness laced along with his voice.
Fu Jie was a bit confused to hear this, but he soon realized that by 'Elder Dayu' the guy was talking about Xiao Jingyi. Fu Jie was still unaware of the identity of this man so when he heard this, his curiosity rose as he questioned whether it was a title that was given to this man? If that was the case, then this man was certainly, just as he had predicted, not a simple man. Normally, in cultivation novels and games, any character that was given a title was a man who was sitting in a high position.
The sect leader was the highest position holder in a sect while the sect elders held the second-highest position. If this guard was calling Xiao Jingyi a sect elder, it meant this man was at the second-highest position in the sect.
Fu Jie hadn't read that many cultivation novels, but he had played a lot of cultivation-themed games, so he knew a bit but it was only general knowledge and it was a bit mixed up here and there so he couldn't be sure if he was guessing right or not.
"We have reported this to the sect leader, but I'm afraid by the time she gets here, it'll be too late."
Fu Jie was shocked to hear the man referring to the sect leader with a female pronoun. Out of all the cultivation games he had played, he never remembered any sect leader being a female unless it was a strictly female sect that only allowed females to be a part of it. They were all mostly men with age as old as an aged tree or even older. It was truly shocking for him to know that this sect leader was a female.
Xiao Jingyi once again nodded his head and didn't say anything. His face looking strict with his lips turned down slightly in a frown and his eyes seeming to glare at the guard. When Fu Jie looked closer, he realized that it wasn't because this man was angry or displeased at the guards. He realized that this was the natural expression of this man who always had a grumpy look on his face.
"We have sent out people to find them."
"We have called the other elders as well."
"Should we ask for more backup?"
Xiao Jingyi shook his head as he finally decided to unseal his mouth that hadn't opened up till now. His deep voice could be heard again and this time, Fu Jie was even more affected by it. This man certainly sounded like a demon. How could a person's voice be so deep and demonic? It really sent a shiver down his spine as he heard it.
"You think I'm not capable enough?!" Xiao Jingyi scolded the guards, "There is no need for backup! It'll only cause more trouble."
The guard immediately bowed his head and Fu Jie almost felt a bit of sympathy for him, to be scolded like that with the man's demonic voice, if it was Fu Jie, he was sure that he would've peed his pants on the spot.
"Understood, Elder Dayu." The man spoke, his voice clearly displaying his fear of the man.
"Send out more people. Find them and bring them back here right now!" Xiao Jingyi shouted at the poor guard who was looking much like a cat that had been drenched in the rain and stood in front of a big dog who could only see the cat as its food. "If you can't find them, don't bother coming back!"
By this time around, Fu Jie had already realized that the people these men were talking about were Fu Jie and his cellmate who had already fled the scene.
This Xiao Jingyi was the man that freed them and he was also the man who was ordering people to find him.
Fu Jie instantly knew that he made a good decision when he followed this man. If he went after the cellmate who was on the run, he would have run into more trouble but if he were to follow this man who was controlling the guards here, he was surely going to be safe. After all, nobody would search under their nose to find the thief, since no thief would be stupid enough to stay behind like that.
The guards all nodded and stumbled as they ran away. It looked a lot like they were scrambling away in fear of this man.
Fu Jie decided to follow this man more but when Xiao Jingyi started walking, Fu Jie heard another voice speaking out loud and it successfully distracted him. He looked over at where the sound was coming from, but he couldn't see anything due to all the bushes and trees. It was clear that he was in a thickly vegetated jungle so he was unsure of where the voice was coming from, however, he still decided to go after the voice.
When he tried to stand on his feet, he was shocked to see that his goddamn legs that weren't listening to him previously had now gone back to working properly. He stood up and twisted his leg in circles as he made sure that his feet were fine. Surprisingly, they were.
Fu Jie smiled as he walked towards where the sound was coming from.
When he finally reached the area where the sound was coming from, he hid behind a tree and observed the situation. In front of him were three guards who were talking amongst themselves as they walked.
Fu Jie was suddenly thankful for all the trees that helped provide him a perfect hiding spot. He walked with them, making sure that they didn't realize his presence. This was probably the first time in life Liu Fu Jie was stalking someone like this and he was shocked to learn that he had a natural talent for this stuff. His stalking skills were certainly on par with professionals and he didn't know if he should feel proud of that or not.
"Who would try to save those bastards?"
"Who else do you think it is?" One of the guards scoffed with an ugly expression on his face as he spoke, "It has to be that wretched demon."
The other guard seemed to frown as he heard this, "I don't think it's him."
"Are you trying to say that he is innocent?!"
"He might not be innocent but I don't think he'll try to come back here just to save someone he doesn't even know."
"Brother, you sound like you know him personally." The other guard asked with an ugly smirk that matched with his hostile tone of speaking.
"Of course I don't know him." The guard shook his head frantically as he tried to explain himself, "It's just... My gut."
"What a useless gut you have! Would have been better if you carved it out and cooked it with pork stew."
Fu Jie couldn't help but feel surprised as he heard this. This man certainly had a colorful vocabulary! Gut stew! Why didn't Fu Jie ever come up with that insult?!
The other guard was silent as he heard this and it was clear that he was a bit scared to argue with this man who was clearly not going to agree with him.
In reality, even Fu Jie could sense that this guard wasn't making up theories based on his guts. He clearly had a reason why he was voicing out his opinion. Out of the two guards, this one seemed to have a brain while the other seemed to be all muscles with no brain.
"You two should not discuss that here. Aren't we supposed to be finding two rats?" The third guard spoke up for the first time since Fu Jie had joined in to eavesdrop on their conversation.
Fu Jie's attention was now drawn to this guard who looked to be a bit younger than the other two and yet, he seemed to have more muscles and brains than the other two combined. Muscles and brains combined was definitely not a good thing if Fu Jie was against such an opponent.
Mostly in games, If his opponent had brains, he would fight them with power and if his opponent was all muscles, he would defeat them with a brain. That was a strategy that always seemed to work for him, but if his opponent was both power and brains combined, the chances of Fu Jie's winning were thinned out. After that, it all depended on luck and competition between who was better.
"You go that side and you come with me," The man ordered and the other two guards instantly nodded as they heeded his command. It was clear that even though this man looked to be much younger than the other two, he was the one in charge among them.
The guards divided up and while two went to the west side, one went to the east side where his senior had pointed him to go.
The decision of choosing whom to follow wasn't hard for Fu Jie. If he followed the other two, he would surely increase his chances of getting caught, but if he followed the one who was walking alone, even if he was caught, he could hopefully manage to fight him off and run away.
The guard Fu Jie was following was the man who had used his brains to come up with the theory that something didn't fit right. He was smart but when Fu Jie saw him look around frantically as if he were afraid of something popping up from nowhere, he was sure that this man was just another fool and it made Fu Jie want to play a trick on him.
Fu Jie looked up at the trees and calculated the distance and position of each tree. He was never great at maths when he was at school or college. He simply got enough grades to pass every time but that didn't mean he wasn't great at 'maths'. If it was for practical use, it could be said that Fu Jie was the best at it. He was probably the only one who would ever use maths in practical day to day life instead of letting it sit and collect dust in some pages of a forgotten notebook that was eventually going to be thrown away.
For him, maths was a great thing. If you copy it as your teacher told you, you won't be able to realize its importance, but if you try to put it into practice, you would realize that it was the best subject the education system ever offered you.
Fu Jie smirked as he tried to make as little noise as possible when he ran ahead of the guard and climbed up on a small tree. This tree was short and had a lot of leaves that perfectly hid him, but the reason why he chose this tree was simply because he had a fear of height and wanted to choose the smallest tree possible.
He had calculated the height and strength of all the trees here so he knew that this tree was the one with the thickest branch that was close to the ground.
Maths was certainly very great!
All he had to do now was wait for the guard to arrive and when he did, Fu Jie smirked as he shouted, "You gutted pig!"
The man was startled and stumbled as he took a few steps back causing him to fall over. His eyes went wide and he looked around trying to find where the voice had come from.
"W-who was that?"
"You dare ask me who I am? I'm your grandfather, you little piece of cow dung!"
