Tales of the New World

The year 2080 was a turning point for humanity. Unfortunately, the sudden and unexpected flooding of the Earth by the oceans claimed many lives, buildings, and cities. However, where there were once dry lands, new transportation routes were created. Old oil platforms became new homes for the survivors. And now, 106 years have passed since those unforgettable times. But is it really true? We're not sure if it's just the main character's illusion or the truth.

Return

Leo wakes up again in a hospital bed, but he doesn't remember anything. He doesn't even know who he is and doesn't remember the previous simulation or the one from which he was forcibly awakened. His entire memory was mixed up by the crazy scientific project that was his modern shock therapy. "Zohar, what are you doing here?" Leo said to the doctor on the right, who looked just like Zohar despite slight differences in appearance. The doctor had black hair, while Zohar had blond hair. The doctor had green eyes, while Zohar had black ones. Zohar had a scar on his face, while the doctor did not.

"I'm not Zohar, my name is David. You can call me whatever you want if it helps you," the doctor replied after a moment. Leo continued to look at the people around him. They were familiar yet strange. After he knew where he was roughly and had put everything together in his head, he asked, "Why did you extract me?"

"I'm sorry, Leo. But payment for the therapy has not been made yet. Actually, it was only paid once for thirty thousand dollars, covering only two sessions," the person next to the doctor said.

Leo was still shaken. He didn't know what to think about it. He was one of the best in the special police unit, and even though they promised to pay for twelve sessions, they didn't do it. After a moment, Leo sat up in bed, looked ahead, and asked, "When can I go home?"

"It depends on how you feel and whether your motor skills allow it. At first, just focus on your finger, and nothing else," said Doctor David. "Alright, now stand up and walk around the room." Leo did so and showed no significant changes. Therefore, the doctor discharged him and gave him a prescription for painkillers in case any pain appeared, and allowed him to leave slowly.

"Doctor, do you think this is a good idea?" asked the nurse. "Do you think it's a good idea to keep a man who witnessed something terrible here? Do you think he will get better here?" "No," the doctor replied.

Leo took the elevator down, then exited and saw a crowd of people going in different directions, probably rushing to work. Suffering people, rich people, poor people, everyone walked alongside each other, fighting in the rat race.

He walked two blocks until he reached his one-room apartment, which had only a bathroom with a shower and a view of the city. Nobody was waiting for him there. He only found a mailbox filled to the brim with email chips, which he read after entering. "Hey son, I heard you had an accident at work. Your father and I are still thinking about you. Your brother was also accepted to the university you chose for him. I hope he becomes a good engineer like your sister." Almost all of them reminded him to pay the electricity and rent bills. Without paying any further attention, he went to sleep, even though he might get evicted from the apartment he had earned for himself.

Leo slept for another five hours, trying to sleep longer, but he couldn't bear the headache that overcame him. He took some other painkillers that he had in his apartment and lit a cigarette, looking towards his laptop, which he later brought to bed with him. He entered the website of some travel company and saw advertisements: 'CHEAP TRIP TO MARS TODAY FOR ONLY two hundred thousand dollars.' The prices increased as he scrolled down, so he left the website and entered some entertainment website, where he saw an advertisement for the latest R-VR headset 'Immerse yourself in any character you choose for ONLY twelve thousand dollars.' He clicked on the order button, but a window popped up: 'You do not have sufficient funds.'

After a moment, a new window popped up with the message 'Confirm your purchase'. He went ahead and confirmed the purchase, filling out the required information in the pop-up window. He wasn't entirely sure what it was for since he didn't have the funds, but he still went ahead and ordered the Full Dive VR headset.

After a moment, another window appeared with payment options, one of which was pain. Leo chose this option, laughing at the fact that he didn't know how he would pay for it, since he didn't even have two thousand, let alone twelve. But if he was going to get something for free, then so be it.

Without paying attention to the pop-up windows anymore, Leo went to sleep after the pain stopped bothering him.
