A Father's Return

I hoped I never looked different as I thought or I had a problem but I continued getting closer and closer. I felt the passion in their eyes. This made me to sure they were the one, one blood. I didn't know if they will accept me as their father or if they will despise me. I was too close and no adult person was out. I stopped and also continued staring at them. To my surprise, the girl shouted calling her mother, before I could stop smiling at her, I saw Miriam, my former house assistant, coming out of the house. 

The moment she set her eye on me the tears started flowing out of her eyes down her cheeks. I didn't know if they were tears of joy or bitterness. I wished the ground would open and swallow me alive but those were past gone days during the time of Moses and Elijah. I wished to just proceed and comfort her, but my hands were "tied" . I was not sure if she could get more angry or get relieved. In the thrust of dark's tail, one woman came out of the house asking what's wrong with Miriam but she didn't answer. I guess she was her mother. She was of medium height and she looked dangerous. "What are you doing here?" what brought you here?", "I'm Daniel and I'm here to see Miriam, she was my house help some few years ago. I answered her politely not wishing to raise her demons." What is the main reason you are here?" "Mum, he's the father of my children" Miriam interrupted our conversation. 

So she welcomed me to the house. Upon hearing that I'm the father of the children. I guessed the moment I step my feet inside, the atmosphere will be uncomfortable for me. As the saying goes, don't judge a book by its cover. I was taken to the visitors' house and Miriam's mother directed me to where I should sit. As I thought of my first visit to my wife, it was just the same as here, automatically I knew this woman still treats me as the in-law despite the mistake I made. After showing me where to sit she dashed out of the house.

 I remained alone in the house, my stomach was getting hot and hot, and I knew I may be in hot "okra soup." Before long one fine lady came in carrying a tray having juices, bread, and eggs among others which I could not see. She places it on the table; she greeted me with a huge smile exposing her white teeth. She welcomed me for the food while she sat opposite me. I didn't want to be comfortable while eating since I knew much was waiting for me thus I couldn't be that comfortable. After 30 minutes, I was done with eating. The lady cleaned the table and collected the remains, and dashed out of the house. Suddenly, I heard a knock at the door and a group of ten people came into the house. Miriam, her mother, and two elderly women. On the other hand, there were 6 men, 4 elderly, and 2 young men. 

They all sat and made themselves comfortable. Among the men, there was one tall muscular body. I knew anytime the earth could break loose and the son of a woman would be in trouble l. I was worried though courageous and ready for anything.

So one of the elders broke the silence. "Good afternoon ladies and gentlemen, it's my pleasure to be here and I have been requested by Miriam's mother to be here. This is an emergency matter which cannot allow the sun to set before we handle them. With due respect, I have been told that our in-law is here and it's a good thing he has come at the right time.

He was Miriam's boss and he happened to be with her and they got these two beautiful children. We have all been called here to witness and hear from our in-law and also to know exactly what he wants, after all of those years passed without seeing him.Please our in-law tells us your word." 

"My in-laws, good afternoon. First of all, I want to take this opportunity to thank you for giving me such a cordial welcome. I never imagined I would be accepted or have a peaceful conversation, rather I guessed I could be chased away and humiliated like an abettor in the battlefield. "My name is Daniel. I am from Nairobi and I was Miriam's boss, she was my maid, and she was hard-working, humble and respectful. Like any other human being, I happened to be attracted to Miriam and she got my attention and now we are here today. 

I paid all the hospital bills and I gave her some amount of money for daily usage until I'll come back to see her after one week. On my way, I got carjacked and I lost everything including her number, I was beaten, robbed and I got injured. I was taken to the hospital. My wife had to nurse my wound, therefore, she could not report to work. Despite being in hospital I did not tell the truth, so one week passed before I could visit Miriam.
