"This report was three years old."
Three years? I've been missing for three years? My mind was in a mix. The information that was given to me at the moment by a stern-faced Sir Andrew left me bewildered. How can I be missing for three years? How old am I anyway?
"Are you sure you checked the report right," Beth asked, concern lacing her words. She was probably thinking the same things I was.
Sir Andrew exhaled as he replied, "Yes, multiple times. But that's what it says."
"How can that be, Sir? A child her age missing three years ago would have caused a huge concern!" Mr. Will placed his glass down as droplets of water spilled from the sides. "What about the parents?"
"Yeah, the parents would have made a huge ruckus and requested full attention to this case. It's been three years, but we have yet to hear about this!" Beth seemed to be bewildered and enraged.
"Maybe they gave up," I mumbled out loud unconsciously. It was possible. Maybe they tried their very best, but with so much time passing by, they could have given up and went on with their life. But is that how parents are towards their child? I don't know…
Beth squeezed my hands that were placed on top of the table, in little fists. The warmth of her touch reassured me. "There's no way they would give up. You're so lovely." Beth came over and hugged my small frame as I nodded along. Maybe they didn't give up.
"Yes, right now, we still do not know if this is your report for sure." Sir Andrew looked towards the other two as they nodded in return.
"So, we are going to do that," Mr. Will said as though the glance Sir Andrew cast his way had some sort of hidden meaning behind it.
"Okay, I'll start on the preparations." Beth got up and left the kitchen. I sighed. There they go again, talking about something I don't know. Why do they do this? They know I'm sitting right here.
"Rena," Sir Andrew said as I looked up at him. "Do not worry, we are here for you. Just enjoy your breakfast and play with Luka. I will come get you a little later." He looked towards the puppy that had finished his meals and was looking over at us. Mr. Will had left the room shortly after Beth. They both were probably preparing for whatever they were talking about.
I nodded as I quickly smiled at Sir Andrew. I can't make him worry anymore than he is. He's been staying up late just to find out about my situation. "Okay, I won't worry. I'm going to play with Luka now," I said as I ate the last bit of my breakfast that tasted as heavenly as ever. I gulped down the juice, placing the glass on top of the plate as I climbed down from the too-high chair.
Placing the cup and glass in the sink, a place that I was just about to reach with my short stature, I waved at Luka. He came running towards me as quickly as possible. A small laugh left my lips at the sight. He's so cute, I thought as I waved goodbye at Sir Andrew and left the room.
Our destination was my room, for now at least. I did not want to get lost in the building like the other time at night. That was not a good experience for me. I entered my room as I spotted something on top of my bed.
"What's that?" I walked towards my bed and started to climb on top. Reaching the top, I saw that there were toys along with a note. I unfolded the note as I read it.
[Rena, I got some toys for Luka, so play with him and cheer up.]
The letter had the writer's name written on the bottom. Oh, it's from Beth, I thought as I got excited. With these, I can play with Luka to my heart's content. But my smile faded as I realized something. Wait a minute, how can I read? I'm only a child. I'm not at the age where I can read. That goes for my talking as well. I talk as if I was an adult. Weird.
I was brought out of my thoughts by a very excited Luka, who looked at the new toys with a sparkle in his eyes. "Do you want to play catch, Luka?" Luka nodded as he jumped off of the bed. I tossed the ball to Luka as he caught it with his mouth, bringing it back to me right afterwards. We repeated this process and played with the other toys until I got a knock on my door.
"Rena, I'm here to pick you up."
"Okay, I'm coming." I got off of the bed as I opened the door to reveal Sir Andrew.
"Let's go." Sir Andrew held out his hand as I grabbed it.
"Where are we going," I asked as we walked down the hallway, Luka following us from right behind. He had grown really attached to me. He never left my side.
"To a place where we can confirm who your family is." Sir Andrew looked ahead the whole time he spoke to me. He had the same stern face on just as he did in the morning.
"My family…," I whispered as we started to go into a part of the building that was unfamiliar to me.
We made twists and turns in different hallways and entered different sections of the building. I had no idea the building had so many rooms before today. It was weird how much different the atmosphere was in this part of the building. It felt as though there was no life present.
A chill ran down my spine as we stopped in front of a tall door. Sir Andrew then opened his mouth to speak, "We're here."
