The more he looked, the darker his expression became. The appearance of such lined waves could only mean one thing: something far away was changing the shape of the waves. And in the sea, the only things capable of this were fish or ships.
Fish wouldn't cause such phenomena, which left only ships. And there were a lot of them—it looked like they were surrounded.
Realizing this, Shanks' face darkened as he turned to Buggy and said, "Buggy, use the Den Den Mushi to contact the captain. We might be surrounded by enemies. They're not targeting us yet, which means their real goal is the captain and the others!"
"W-Where? Where are the enemies?"
Hearing that they were surrounded, Buggy panicked. His body split into pieces, with his head flying into the air as he frantically scanned the surroundings, stuttering as he asked.
Buggy's body fell to the ground in chunks, leaving only his head hovering in the air. The scene was so comical and absurd that it was hard not to laugh.
Shanks, however, was used to this reaction. Every time they encountered enemies, Buggy would put on this ridiculous show.
But today was different. In the past, with Roger and the others around, Shanks could afford to watch Buggy's antics. Now, it was just the two of them—there was no time for entertainment.
Grabbing a part of Buggy's scattered body, Shanks squeezed it hard, muttering to himself, "I can't let Buggy keep wasting time. We need to notify the captain as soon as possible so they can prepare."
Buggy's head, still flying in the air, felt the pain from his body and immediately fell to the ground.
"Ouch… ouch… ouch…"
Buggy's face twisted in pain, beads of sweat streaming down as he grimaced. Once he recovered, he reassembled himself, stood up, grabbed Shanks by the collar, and shouted, "Damn it, Shanks! Are you trying to kill me?!"
Shanks didn't want to hurt him, but it was the only way to snap Buggy out of his panic quickly.
Seeing that Buggy was no longer frightened, Shanks didn't bother explaining. Instead, he said directly, "The Den Den Mushi is with you. Contact the captain now, and then we'll find a place to hide."
Shanks didn't bother clarifying because their dynamic had always been like this—constantly bickering or on the verge of it.
This pattern started ever since Buggy accidentally ate the Devil Fruit and had continued until now: one carefree, the other frustrated and helpless. (The chemistry is undeniable!)
Buggy sprayed Shanks' face with a torrent of angry spit before finally letting him go. Then, pulling out a Den Den Mushi with an exceptionally long nose hair, Buggy dialed quickly. There was no doubt whose Den Den Mushi this was—it could only be Roger's.
"Brrr… Brrr…"
Though cowardly and unreliable, Buggy knew the seriousness of the situation. He didn't hesitate to call.
On the Oro Jackson
At this moment, the Roger Pirates were sailing slowly ahead, unaware of the danger lying in wait. Even if they knew, they would still go—after all, their crewmates were out there.
Shanks knew Roger wouldn't abandon anyone, so he hadn't even entertained the idea of suggesting they not come. Instead, he focused on ensuring they were prepared to avoid falling into a trap.
Onboard, the officers were drinking, chatting, and boasting as usual, while the regular crew busied themselves steering the ship. Meanwhile, Reno pestered Rayleigh for more "trade secrets."
"Tap… tap… tap…"
A regular crew member jogged up to Roger, holding a Den Den Mushi. "Captain, Buggy is calling."
Roger looked at the Den Den Mushi, its red nose unmistakable. Confused, he took it. They had just spoken yesterday—why was Buggy calling again today? Had something gone wrong?
Realizing this might be the case, Roger wasted no time in idle speculation and answered directly.
"Captain… captain, we're surrounded! You've got to save us!"
Before Roger could ask anything, the Den Den Mushi began to sob uncontrollably, and Buggy's trembling, tearful voice came through, pleading for help.
Everyone on the ship heard this and fell silent. The atmosphere grew heavier and more oppressive by the second.
Reno, feeling the unintentional pressure emanating from the crew's strongest members, thought to himself, No wonder Roger became the Pirate King—his crew is packed with powerhouses!
He noted that not only were the officers imposing, but even some of the regular crew exuded an aura comparable to them.
Although these regular members might not be as strong as the officers, they were likely capable of putting up a good fight against them.
"If you don't come to save us, we're all going to die!"
As the oppressive silence stretched, Buggy's desperate cry shattered the tension.
Roger watched as the Den Den Mushi, representing Buggy, sobbed and begged relentlessly. Buggy hadn't even managed to say who the enemies were. Roger finally spoke, "Shanks should be with you. Put him on the line."
Roger knew Buggy's cowardly nature. Panicked as he was, there was no point in talking to him. It was better to let Shanks explain.
"Captain, you have to come save me!"
Before handing the Den Den Mushi to Shanks, Buggy couldn't resist one last plea for rescue, showcasing just how terrified he was.
The Den Den Mushi, mimicking Shanks' face, soon spoke in his voice.
"Captain Roger, we haven't seen the enemy yet, but I've noticed some anomalies on the sea…"
"It seems like the island we're on is surrounded by countless ships. However, they haven't made a move against us. It looks like their real target is you, Captain Roger!"
Shanks relayed everything he had observed and even shared his speculations before finally stopping.
