Melody

Beijing Tiantan Hospital.

Ava was sitting at her desk, staring at her computer screen absentmindedly. Her eyes were staring at nothing and her mind was blank. Since morning her mind was somewhere else, she held an early morning meeting for cardiologists but finished it after a few words. Everyone could see something was wrong with her but no one dared to say or ask anything.

The news of Ava breaking up with Oliver had already spread in the whole Hospital. The other day when Oliver and Ava were arguing in the corridor someone saw them and immediately it has become the hot news. All the doctors and nurses were talking about it. Some people said they were never a good match, some said they were from different backgrounds so it wasn't supposed to work and some even said Oliver just used Ava, and when he was done playing he dumped her. The hospital was full of rumors and gossips. Ava has thick skin so she didn't care about these rumors and gossips and usually just pretended not to hear them.

Ava was still staring at the computer screen when a middle-aged woman burst into the doctor's office and started to shout at Ava.

"Director Green, my husband has serious coronary heart disease. Why didn't you mention it in his medical records? You are so young to be a director, how the hospital made such an irresponsible person, their director?" The family members of the patient in room 2203 stood in front of Ava and keep scolding her.

"Mrs. Li, I'm sorry about your husband's condition. But when you admitted him to the hospital, we asked you to fill out his past case history. It was your responsibility to write it on the form so how is this my fault." Ava stood up and said calmly.

Yes, she is young, but that didn't mean she was not professional. In fact, she was more ethical and professional among many doctors at this hospital. She always took her patients as her priority and never handle any case lightly.

"Even if I didn't write it, but as a doctor, aren't you supposed to check the patient? And what kind of attitude is this? How can you talk to me like that? Do you know that I can go to your dean to complain about you right now?" Mrs. Li got even angrier when she saw Ava wasn't going to take the blame.

"Whatever you want, besides, I haven't done the operation yet, so you don't need to cause such a big fuss about it. You can ask someone else to do the operation I will not do it." Ava was already in a bad mood and now this woman's unreasonable words were making her angry so she didn't care anymore and said sharply.

If it was Ava's fault she will definitely recognize and apologies for it but since it was not her fault she was very annoyed by the attitude of the woman in front of her. Ava just checked her husband once when he was admitted and this woman was causing a ruckus because of that. Ava felt a headache.

"You just wait and watch. I'll go to the dean and complain, how could they have such arrogant and manner less doctor in the hospital." Mrs. Li said, gnashing her teeth as she stormed out of the office.

Ava didn't say anything she sat down on the chair with an indifferent face. Her eyes fell on the desk calendar and she saw it was July 14, today. It was a very special day for her, how did she forget the day? Till this year she had never forgotten this day no matter wherever she was.

She took the rest of the day off and drove by the flower shop in the center of the city, she bought a bunch of stars and then ran to the cake shop to buy a birthday cake. After that, she straightway drove to Blue Mountain Cemetery. Ava looked up and saw the sky was as gloomy as her mood, the sun that should be high up was hiding behind the cloud. Maybe, even heaven hasn't forgotten what day it is.

Ava reached the third tombstone and stopped there. Looking at the familiar smiling face, her eyes turned red and tears started to flow. Suddenly Ava's eyes fell on a bunch of stars beside the tombstone, she was confused it looked like someone has been here before her. But who that could be?

Ava kneeled down in front of the tombstone and touched the picture. Below the picture, her name and her date of birth and death were written in bold font.

Melody Parker.

DOB: July 14, 1996.

DOD: Feb 14, 2015

Babysbreath used to be Melody's favorite flower. Like Melody, it was not something extraordinary but it was still pure and beautiful. Somehow it was still eye-catching.

"Mel, how are you? I have come to see you." Ava's choked voice sounded a little hoarse. She put down the blue star she brought with her, next to purple stars.

"Mel, it's your birthday today. Happy Birthday! How are you doing there? I miss you so much. Do you know I broke up with Jacob? He went abroad. Maybe in this life, we won't see each other ever again." Ava kept talking as if she was updating her friend about her life events and the tears kept flowing.

Melody and Ava become best friends since the day they met. They were only five years old, they went to participate in the competition at the youth palace. Luckily they were paired up and played together at the competition. Ava still remembered Melody's frightened face got full of confidence the moment she started to play and catching up with her was effortless for Ava, it was like they learned to play only for each other. So harmonious, so beautiful that the audience was in awe of them.

Since that competition Ava and Melody were stuck with each other like inseparable souls, they practiced together every day. Ava played the piano, accompanied by Melody. They went to the same primary school, junior high school, and senior high school.

However, everything changed after high school graduation. She and Melody had a car accident and Ava lost her best friend and her soul. It took a long time for Ava to accept that Melody was gone. Whenever she tried to play piano after that, her mind would be full of Melody and she couldn't play anymore, that's why she stopped playing.
