Are You Kidding Me!?

"You can do this." Cindy did her usual morning ritual in front of the mirror which consisted of; self-praise, making faces, brushing hair for the fifth time, and a stare-down into a smile. Cindy then twirled around in her new skirt, princess walked down the stairs, and skipped down the hall. She halted halfway through the hall and peered out the window.

"Dad, why is there a moving van?" Cindy called out.

"That house finally sold...Guess the purchasers are already moving in." Cindy's father replied nonchalantly from the couch. Cindy looked to see if she could find the owners and saw a family of three. They appeared busy except for the son. He looked to be about my age and was a couple inches taller. After concluding he was not that important Cindy walked down the rest of the hallway and into the kitchen, where she was greeted by a warm motherly smile.

"Good-morning sweety, have you heard about our new neighbors? They have a boy that looks your age, why don't you go say hello and give them some of the scones I made?" Her mother grinned and offered the plate of warm scones.

"Do I have to?" Cindy asked in a grumpy tone, she just wanted to eat and go to school.

"Of course you have to!" Cindy's mother urged.

"Fine," Cindy reluctantly agreed.

"Not like anyone eats your scones anyway." Cindy grumbled.

"Hmm? What was that?" Her mother smiled, but she didn't look very happy, she had obviously overheard.

"Nothing!" Cindy yelped and scattered down the hallway and out the door.

She walked out passed the patio and down the steps only pausing to block the sun. Cindy walked over to her neighbors and decided it would be better to not bother them when they were busy, so she walked over to the boy crouching in the grass and introduced herself.

"Hello, my name is Cindy Appleyard I live next door." Cindy had a fake smile plastered on her face and leaned over with her hand held out held out to receive a handshake.

"..." No response. Cindy stood there with her hand stuck out in silence and almost heard the crickets chirping.

"Um, hello." Cindy tried her hardest to keep her smile and succeeded, but failed in keeping a semi-acceptable tone.

"..." Silence again. Cindy had about had it with this kid whoever he may be. She was about to start walking back home with her plate still full of scones, when the boy spoke up.

"Quinn Dailey." Quinn said while snatching two scones off the plate and dropping the stick he was playing with. Cindy sat down in the grass next to him because she figured her mother wouldn't let her back in with only two scones gone.

"Wait, You shouldn't sit there." Quinn said struggling to keep from laughing.

"Huh? What do you mean?" Cindy suddenly felt like bugs were crawling all over her!

"Ugh! What is this?!" Cindy shouted as she stood up and noticed she had sat on an anthill! She dropped the plate of scones into Quinn's arms and bolted home with more than a couple tears in her eyes. Behind she could hear Quinn's laughter.

When Cindy got home, she rushed up the stairs and immediately stripped and turned on the shower. She hopped in and washed the ants down the drain and sprayed the rest of them with bug spray. Cindy got ready swiftly and went back downstairs. Even after washing she still felt like there were ants crawling all over her.

"What are you still doing here you're going to be late!" Cindy's mom shouted. Cindy ran out the door and grabbed her bike. She started pedaling like a mad man and arrived at her school huffing and puffing. Cindy ran inside and checked in at the office before walking to her homeroom. She opened the door to her class and saw some people hadn't arrived yet and sat down at her desk.

"Hey Cindy! Later than usual, ai?" Cindy's friend Samantha teased.

"Oh shut up, you don't even want to know what happened this morning. So I had got a new skirt and..." Cindy explained her morning to her friend and expected atleast some support but got laughed at instead.

"Hahahaha...You...Sat on an anthill...Hahahah...I'm sorry...but...Hahaha..." Cindy didn't think it was that funny but Samantha laughed her head off to the point where she could hardly breathe before pulling herself together after noticing the rest of the class, including the teacher, staring at her with weird looks.

"Anyway, class we have a new student!" The teacher exclaimed before opening the door.

*Step, step, step*

Cindy looked to see who it could be and saw Quinn standing there.

"What! Why are you here?!" Cindy stood and screamed while pointing at Quinn. She sat back down after Samantha giggled at her and the rest of the class stared, realizing her mistake.

"Cough...This is Quinn Dailey I hope you guys can get along and since Cindy and him seem to know each other why doesn't Samantha come sit up here so Quinn can sit by a friend." The teacher said enthusiastically.

"Good-luck." Samantha said to Cindy while walking to her new seat.

"Thanks for all the scones." Quinn said quietly with a chuckle after he had sat down. Cindy gnawed her lip and didn't respond to his taunting.

'Neighbors, schoolmates, and deskmates. Are you kidding me!?' Cindy screamed internally.
