MY PAINKILLER

PAINKILLER I just got my release papers after spending seven years in prison. You might all be wondering why I got in prison. It's that simple. I killed a man for raping me. Now, most people and the court didn't see what I did as self defence because that man was my husband. They thought me cruel and heartless to murder a man who I was supposed to love. I don't blame them because they were actually right but they did not know the full story behind my charade of a marriage. I only blame my parents for selling me off and getting me married against my will. I had just turned eighteen and I wanted to enjoy my adulthood but they ruined my plans. They got me married and I spent the other years in prison. I was the only child of my parents and things were not so good for us. I was willing to not go to school in order to help them hustle and provide. But they thought marrying me off would solve our financial needs. I begged and pleaded but they wouldn't listen. And after three months of marriage, I turned a murderer. I was willing to leave all that in the past now and start anew. But I couldn't help but wonder if my past was willing to leave me and let me start anew. One way or the other, I knew, that my past was gonna come haunt me. And I don't know if I was prepared or not yet. "Victoria Williams?" a female police officer asked me when I got to the counter. "Yes ma'am," I replied and nodded. I watched her fill out a book and let me sign. She gave me some new clothes and a wallet. Another police officer unlocked my handcuffs and showed me a room to change in. I changed quickly and observed myself in a mirror. I had changed a whole lot. All my fat was gone and was replaced by thin skin,  jutting bones and sunken eyes. The new clothes made me presentable to the world I was going to meet and that was satisfactory. I walked out the changing room to the waiting room to be greeted by a small girl who ran and hugged me. "Mummy," she said.

CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

The sitting room was tastefully and expensively furnished. Two siblings sat in different sofas while the third paced about. Their mom got a call that made her stay less than she had planned. The atmosphere in the room was tensed. Two siblings felt worry and guilt. The third was angry and annoyed.

"You two fucked up," Walter who was pacing about stopped and said, looking at them. "Just a simple task and you both messed it up."

"I couldn't just pull through with it anymore. That girl has suffered enough because of what we've done," Derek said.

"I agree. And it's not fair that she'll trust us and we keep breaking it. Imagine the simple things she found out about us and she's run away. What happens when she finds out the big stuff? I don't want her to die," Nancy said.

Walter gritted his teeth, "You both are stupid. Why should you care what happens to that animal. Did she care about how our family will feel when she murders our brother? Did she?"

"It was unintentional," Nancy defended.

"And if anybody fucked up, it was you," Derek accused.

"What? How? I didn't let love blind me. My eyes have been on the goal," Walter said.

"You pushed her to the wall so much. I know you're angry and mad but you shouldn't have come so direct. She suspects you more than she suspects me and Nancy," Derek said.

"Fuck you. You hear me? Fuck you both. You two are wimps that were easily swayed. You have the nerve to defend someone who murdered your brother and then blame it on me?" Walter spat.

"You're blaming us here too when you're the one at fault. We went by the plan all along, putting things in place and they were successes. But when it was your turn to finalize the plan, you went haywire and now she's gone," Nancy accused.

"You know what? You both keep wallowing your stupid love feelings. I'll do this on my own. My own way. I'm done with you both," Walter shouted in anger and made to walk out.

Derek stood and warned, "Do not touch her daughter. Don't you dare."

"That is exactly what I'm going to do," Walter replied and swaggered out.

Derek turned to Nancy and asked, "Do you know where he sent the girl to?"

"Yes, I do. Saw the address on his office desk in his room. Took a photo," Nancy replied.

"Very good. We've got to find the girl and Victoria and undo everything we've done," Derek said.

"What about Walter?" Nancy asked.

"We have to find them first. And fast."
