Chapter 44_ I read minds

I woke up with a banging headache. My head hurts like hell and I wondered if I went on a fighting spree in sleep. Funny how the girls were already awake and eating. Was Mackenzie and senior Eira eating leftovers from yesterday? ...

Ewwww.

I raised my head up and lifted my body from the bed while my elbow was still on it. " Sleeping beauty is awake" Mackenzie announced causing senior Eira and Mia to glance over at me. Mia came to the bedside " Oh, Medusa it's 1 o'clock in the after noon and you're just waking? Even the voice over has announced bringing Our lunch soon." I grimaced, what she was saying doesn't really matter to me. I continued to hold my head, The ache was overbearing.

" What's wrong?" Mackenzie asked from where she was sitting. I winced again, now I had my head bent with my hands fully placed on my forehead "I...Have a big headache" I stammered. " My head is pounding. I saw that there was silence after I announced my headache and brought my face up to look at the girls. They were exchanging glances and I knew immediately something was fishy.

"What is it?" I said now gazing at them with suspicious eyes. Mia moved closer to touch my shoulders and... " Uhmm, actually Medusa, I think I know why you have a headache" her eyes growing somber. What was she talking about? " You do" I frowned.

"Yes," she shook her head. "We all do"

I brought my clueless eyes to glimpse at Mackenzie and senior Eira but Mackenzie looked away immediately. It was as if they knew something and were keeping it away from me.

"Guys" I called with a dimmed eye. None of them seemed ready to answer me. After calling out to them once more, senior Eira finally spoke.

" You were so sound asleep, I and Mia wanted to wake you up but Mackenzie said not to disturb your beauty sleep. Then the kitchen staff came to distribute breakfasts. You know, we can not let them know we were actually four in the room since they've all been counted. So, we had to hide you." then she stopped and glanced over at the girls as if she wanted them to take over from her. It was Mia who first spoke " Please please, we grant you this moment, the stage is all yours. " she ushered the senior to continue her explanation.

"Fine" senior Eira shrugged. I could tell she could care less about my reaction " So your friends decided to hide you in the toilet while I teleport me and Mackenzie away. While dragging you, they clumsily allowed you to fall and you hit your head on the floor" she finished. The way she explained it all so nonchalantly made me want to hit her hard on the head. She was saying it as if it was nothing and okay how they slammed me on the floor.

" Funny Medusa, even that didn't wake you. How are you? What type of sleep was that.." Mia said trying to cover up the fact that they

allow me to hit my head on the floor. No wonder my head was pounding so. I scoffed " Will you shut up? You guys hit my head. No, not only my head my whole body on the floor!" I exclaimed. I turned over to Mackenzie too, making sure she gets a shot of my glaring look. She shrugged when my eyes met hers " But seriously Medusa, what type of sleep was that ?" she asked calmly.

At least she was calm about it, she knew they had hit my head on the floor and it was not cool but Mia was trying to make it look like I was the bad guy for sleeping too much.

But, why was I also deep in asleep like that? Up to the fact that I didn't wake up when they fell me down...

" It's no crime to be able to sleep soundly even in this mess, is it?" I tried to defend myself. Senior Eira's laughter filled the room, what's with her and undue laughs. When its the time to laugh, she wouldn't but when something was not funny, she would start her annoying laughter. "Sorry, carry on" she covered her mouth with her palm " It's just that, you girls are so fun to watch" she pointed at us and looked at us one after the other. " It's sad today is the last day I will be spending with you. I never expected there would be some people in the school that I would grow attached to them up to the point of missing them in advance even when they were still right here in front of me. Especially not newbies" she finished. Did grumpy senior Eira just admit she was going to miss us? Well, I will miss her also. The senior is like an elder sis to us and she has done a good job of enlightening us about some of the secrets of the school. The atmosphere was uneasy following her words. Mia doesn't like her much, obviously and Mackenzie wasn't good with expressing emotions so it was up to me to save the day. " And likewise senior Eira, you have been a good guide and a valuable sister to us within the short period we spent here. It saddens me you will graduate after finishing your studies next year and will be leaving the school" I enunciated emotionally and I meant every word. A wry smile escaped the senior's lips and she nodded at my words.

"Are you going back?" Mackenzie spoke out of the blue and we all turned to her. " You know, back to the other dimension or staying to be amongst the super heroes league" she finished ignoring our stare. Senior Eira pressed her lips into a thin line and became thoughtful for a while. " As much as I love the good feeling that settles on my heart after each successful mission. As good as it is saving lives and helping people even if they do not knoW of our existence, I think I wil go back to my family. They are my people and I love them, this school doesn't feel like home and there is a void I feel in my heart everytime I think about them. I miss them" she sighed and bent her head a bit. I knew she was saddened. Her words made me remember my family and friends too, I miss them.

" So you're just going to allow all of that power to go to waste? You won't make use of it? You will act like you never had it" Mackenzie asked with so much emotion in her voice. I have never seen her speak that way before, with so much emotions her voice was shaking. It was not a passionate emotion though, it was as if she was angry. She noticed the shocked look on all our faces. I was sure that if Mia wasn't trying so hard to stay off of senior Eira's business, she would have said something to Mackenzie's sudden outburst.

She suddenly smiled sheepishly, " Sorry, don't mind me. You guys just go on with your talks" she said and went into the toilet. She didn't even bother to explain to us why she suddenly got enraged like that.

" Sorry senior Eira, I think she is a little bit stressed as a result of all the drama we are facing in the school. You know we are new to the whole game" I grinned, trying to explain on her behalf. "No, it's fine. I totally understand her. There are others in the school who feel the same way too. They felt it's improper to go back to the other dimension and act as if nothing happened even after knowing there was more to the unknown. The thing is, I will go back to the other dimension but I wont act like my powers were never there. As much as I can, I will help others while trying to stay hidden and hiding my powers" she explained.

" Oh, she wants to be a freelance superhero" Mia laughed mockingly.

For the first time, after the whole drama with senior Eira, she said something regarding the senior's matter, and it was to mock her indirectly.

I ignored her and asked the senior a question that was bothering me. " If you wanted to help others, then why not do it here and work for the school? Will it not be risky going back and playing superhero?" I asked in wonder.

The sound of the bathroom door jamming drew away the senior's attention from me. It was Mackenzie walking out with a wet hair and face. I guessed she went to cool off her head by pouring water on it from the bath. "It's not personal but the school is working for the government, Imagine the government gives a task of helping in waging war against a rival country, I don't want to be mixed up with all of that. Killing innocent people l because the government orders it, doing tasks because the government wanted me to do it, no l can't do that" she shook her head. Surprisingly, Mackenzie spoke again. " That is why the other magical schools don't give the option of choosing to work for the government or not. After your studies which is more like training, you resume to work for the government automatically" she said. Wow, Mackenzie is well informed, how did she know that? As if hearing my thoughts.. " How on earth do you know that?" Mia asked her.

"By reading minds and thoughts, the way I know you've been doubting me for long" she smiled at Mia and said in a rather scary calm way.
