Chapter 33: Strangers

The market was hectic and thrilling. I watched Elliot come alive, interacting with everyone around him excitedly. He helped me pick out some summer dresses and sandals, since it was warmer here than I was expecting, and we stuffed ourselves with street food until we could barely walk.

When we were back in the car, Elliot was glowing. “Taking a break was a fantastic idea, bella. It’s delightful just to exist for a while, you know?”

I thought back to how he previously called himself lazy and hoping to retire early. He had been handling the pressure so well, I never thought he might not be enjoying his new position even though I really should have. “Are you okay?” I asked, looking comfortably in his direction.

He shrugged, “I have to be. People are counting on me now.” He stretched his shoulders uncomfortably.

“I’m sorry I didn’t answer your messages,” I said quietly. “But I really am here for you if you want to talk.”
