Chapter 13: The Serpent

Michael’s POV

It was over. The fairytale was over. The guy did not get the girl in the end. Instead, I sat heartbroken at a bar drinking disgusting beer to drown my sorrows.

The bar was empty, looking around at the bare wooden walls I recalled my first memory here. Havana’s face appeared in my head; her blood-red dress fitted to her small frame. The loose curls covered her head like the petals on a blossoming rose.

I take another sip from the beer, feeling the cool disgusting liquid gliding down my throat. Normally I wouldn't indulge in cheap liquor, but I needed something to ease the blow from Havana’s rejection. I had never been rejected before and there was no guide to handling it or heartbreak.

"Mind if I join you?" Jane asked.

Jane was the last person that I thought I'd see here. After dismissing her back at the house, I assumed she'd be halfway home. I was in no mood for company, but I couldn't turn her away. I owed her that much. I reluctantly offer the seat beside me.
