Chapter 2 - The cliché : Useless child

I start my day at sunrise. Here, the sun rises around 4 am. What is up with that?

Since I transmigrated, my family has been very wary of me.

Since this character hit her head before I woke up in this body, they think my "odd" behavior is the result of the fall.

People in the village are commenting a lot about me lately.

Apparently, I am slower than usual, crude, and rougher in doing my work. That's why this character's parents sent the second sister, Saya, to do my portion of the work while I rest.

Since I never had to do this kind of physical work in my previous life, like farming and washing clothes in the stream and other very rustical chores, I really became useless to this family.

Even though I haven't been very useful, they still treat me kindly and with patience.

Not even my real mom was that kind to me when I couldn't do something correctly.

I really want to help them. This family is so nice. The twins, even though they are 5 years old, help around the house.

The house... It's just awful. You wouldn't say that a family of 7 lives there. It is old and full of repairs. The twins sleep with the parents and all the sisters share a room.

The sheets are very old and full of patches. The family clothes as well, but they are always clean, no matter what.

I tried washing them, but apparently I was too rough and ripped one. The mother had to patch it up again. Even though I almost ruined the father's clothes, they were very nice about it.

Thinking that this family is doomed to die makes everything even sadder. They are giving their best everyday to survive.

"Big sister, big sister here...." Little Zoe handed a flower to me. "I want you to feel better and get well fast. So please don't look sad, smile! Everything will be better in no time."

She said with a sweet and gentle smile.

This little bony child, that I can practically see the bones from her collar, is telling me that life is going to get better.

I wish I could do something to prevent their suffering.

*Later at night*

"Dinner is ready, everyone." The second sister,Saya and the mother, managed to make something out of the few food items they managed to buy with their day earnings.

There was meat, actually more bones than meat. The food was more watery, full of veggies like green leaves, and some potatoes.

Who has the appetite for this?

"You can have mine, mother. I haven't worked, so I am not that hungry." I said, trying to avoid eating it. I also felt guilty since I hadn't done anything to help around the house lately.

"No, no, my child. You should eat. You need to recover," said the mother with a sweet but sickly weak voice.

"I am fi-"

*Knock knock*

At dinner time, at this hour, who could be banging on someone else's door?

I noticed that everyone's face had darkened. They didn't want to open. However, the mother, in her sickly voice, answered and opened the door.

"Ohhh, it's dinner time! I totally forgot about that. I heard that my lovely niece fell down and hit her, so I came to visit her." The unexpected visitor pushed herself inside the house.

Oh yeah, Aunt Gertrudes. She was the one who gave mother the drink that made her sick.

She is a woman who doesn't have kids, so I do guess that jealousy made her do that to mother.

"Oh my, she looks so thin and tired... Have you been resting, child? We don't want you to be falling again." She said that with her eyes on the table, looking at the food.

"Oh, you are having vegetable soup. It looks good."

Everyone at the table swallowed dry.

"I haven't eaten all day. I was so worried for my niece that I didn't eat anything." She was eyeing the plate that I set aside for mother.

How can this woman have the courage to even come here, knowing how poor this family is? She has good earnings from her husband, yet she still leeches off of the little that this family has.

I could see Kira biting her little lips in anger. Even Saya, who was normally very gentle, was clutching her fists.

Everyone knew that the mother would offer the lady anything she would ask, even taking from her own portion if needed.

Before I noticed, I was standing up, out of my seat, and facing this aunt.

"Poor aunty, hasn't eaten all day because of me." The woman nodded with a sorrowful face, still looking at the plate with eagerness.

"You should definitely..." She nodded fervently at what I was saying.

"... Go home and cook something for you and your husband. He must also be arriving home, full of hunger." I pushed the woman out, thanking her for being so kind and for coming over.

I closed the door in her face as I said goodbye.

She must have been in disbelief. She couldn't even process what had happened. She remembered this character as gentle-natured, easily to use.

However, I am not like that at all. I hate these kinds of people.

As I came back to the table, everyone had dropped their jaws. They couldn't believe what happened.

Even though no one commented, all I could see was the satisfaction on their faces, especially Kira, who was discreetly smiling.
