"Young lady, are you okay?"
The young lady snapped back to reality after realizing that she had just had an unnecessary soliloquy in which she wasted her time. She looked back at Kaian's hand, which was still present before her. And as she took a breath and calmed down, she accepted the handshake.
'He is interested in me...' She smiled inwardly.
'Is this the right way to introduce oneself to someone? Shaking hands? I don't know, but hope this is alright.' A sweat then broke on Kaian's forehead as he shook his hands with the young lady.
"I am Emily von Roosgold. Nice meeting you, Kaian."
'Hmph! A noble family name is essential. Despite having a baronial family name, I am still a noble compared to him, who didn't have any family name. Haaa... I am so lucky!' Emily thought as she smiled again inwardly.
On the other hand, Kaian let out a sigh of relief.
'It was a good observation. I was right to act respectfully toward him. Most of the people in the library are academic students or people who have received teaching in reading. I was grateful that my father was a navigator, which is why he was able to teach me the basic characters of the commonly used lexicon. If I had been ruder earlier, she might have used her privilege as a noble. I can deal with that, but I might be a criminal and it will hinder my movements if I become one, as it is obvious that I won't let myself get caught.'
"Ah... where were we?"
"You were asking me why I was here. I simply wanted to learn. That was my answer."
'Fuck it. This man just made the atmosphere awkward!' Emily shouted inside as she looked at how blank Kaian's eyes were turning.
"Ah... is that so? I was just curious since there were no... you know, ordinary people coming here. Unfortunately, the population who has the lowest literacy rate were commoners, so I was curious."
"Is that so...? Well, maybe I was a fortunate one to have an ability to read." Kaian responded with a low tone, sounding too formal.
"By the way, what do you do? Why do you want to learn? Do you want to be a civil servant or enroll at the Magic Tower?"
Kaian's eyes slowly moved to Emily's face. He wanted to read her facial expression as he had a slight hint of what was happening between the two of them. However, as he had no experience or knowledge of reading facial expressions, he simply held onto his thoughts.
'Just why is this lady talking to me? Isn't she a noble lady? Most nobles see commoners as dirty and detestable. It is just too suspicious for me. Did she perhaps notice that I have a high accumulated amount of mana in my body? It is the only possible reason why she was talking to me. I need to leave right away.'
"I still don't know about that... But maybe I will try soon."
"I see..."
"Do you mind if I leave now? I still have things to do and I can't entertain you, unfortunately." Kaian lowered his head with his eyes closed as he spoke the words he had formed.
Emily's eyes, on the other hand, were saddened as if the conversation she started just ended too soon. And noticing that Kaian was wanting to leave her sight, she let out a sigh secretly and nodded.
"No worries... It was nice to meet you, Kaian. I hope we see each other again."
"I hope so..." He responded, but inside his head, he continued what he had said. '... not too soon. I am still not comfortable talking to someone who has privilege. I still couldn't discern if I should act normally or not. If I ever get into trouble talking casually, how could I escape it?'
A problem lies with Kaian's mindset, as at the current moment, he was thinking highly and at the moment stereotypical of nobles. Nobles are just humans, just like other humans. And him thinking that all nobles could just do what they wanted in front of a commoner was wrong.
...
'There are plenty of ways of earning, but what is common is being paid by working for someone... the task may vary, but that is common in this place.'
Kaian had been walking since the morning. Today is his official first day living in the city, and to start living in the city, he should find a way to earn money. But, all he had as his abilities were jobs that required his physique. Whether it's fighting or just carrying things.
So, since Kaian should put more interest in things that would enhance his abilities and would make use of them to give him wealth and privilege, and better yet, fame as well, he should take a path where no hefty requirements are needed. As a result, the place he should go today was...
— Adventurer Guild...
'The adventurers' guild is just like the magic tower; however, the adventurers are composed of four types of people, which basically covers the whole category of people's potential and ability.'
'There are four kinds of human potential, Magician, Warrior, Ranger, and Healer.'
A magician is a person who has the power to control mana and convert it into the form of their aptitude. Kaian is an example of it. While his aptitude might still be unclear, his potential in elven magic was already given that he could at least perform any element of magic.
A warrior is a person who has the fighting capabilities to overpower someone normal, but sometimes uses 'aura' which is commonly the willpower of the warrior. Other terms for their unique energy include 'fighting spirit,' which everyone has, but warriors have enhanced.
A ranger is a person who has higher accuracy and also has some energy within that can enhance their attacks with ranged weapons. Mostly, in a group, they are at the back. However, on solo missions, they mostly do stealth attacks with their ranged weapons.
And lastly, a healer is a person who has the ability to heal or make someone recover who is sick or wounded with mana. It is another way of using magic, but healers are only able to use healing magic, which is why their category is different from magicians.
And as Kaian stepped forward and entered the building, which was one of the many branches of it all over the country, he realized that the people inside were no different from him. They might be weaker than him, but the aura they got was already acute as if a mere simple movement from them could kill a normal person.
Adventurers, on the other hand, are extremely well-known jobs for everyone and are also the dream jobs of kids. However, as people look at adventurers as people who could be paid for using their abilities, sometimes they suffer from the stereotypical behaviors of people.
But Kaian was yet to know it. He ambled to the receptionist's desk while inspecting the interior of the building. There were people around, wearing their gear while holding their tools and weapons. Some were browsing the bulletin board and some were casually talking with liquor on their table.
