HALF A HEART

''You're just going to drown deeper.. There's no way out.. The more you try to move, the more you try to swim, the deeper you'll sink.. The most painful thing about sadness is that it knows how to trick you.. It give you time to recover just to attack you even harder.. It tricks you into thinking that it's gone and just when you start to believe it, it comes back like a big wave and drag you back into the deep dark ocean of loneliness..'' That was exactly what Jake was going through.. He thought he will find his happiness if he get a good job, buy a house for his family etc.. But money can't buy happiness.. Things can only give pleasure and pleasure is not happiness.. Happiness is the presence of peace which was no where to be found in Jake's heart.. Half of his heart died the day Abby left.. The remaining died when his own parents stopped calling his name and started treating him like a stranger.. He stopped believing in miracles long ago .. But fate is something unpredictable and unstoppable..

Iris's birthday

"But it's my birthday"

He could feel his baby sister pouting sadly behind that door..

He looked at the calendar and mentally slapped himself for forgetting her birthday..

Iris's eyes lit up as she saw Jake open the door..

'Yes!' she thought as she ran inside his room..

"It's more organized than I thought" she paused and looked at him..

"I thought you're room would be messy and stinky"

"Just because I'm your brother doesn't mean we're alike you know" he sat down on his chair drying his hair with a towel..

"Look at you being rude and all.. You're ageing more and more every single day, why don't you try to say something nice huh? If you keep acting this way you'll end up in hell" she sat down on his bed..

"Hey! I just made the bed don't mess it up!"

"Now I will" she stuck out her tongue at her brother completely messing up the sheets.. She stood up looking down at her 'masterpiece'

"Now it looks more like YOUR bed" she grinned..

"I swear.." he sighed in frustration regretting letting her in..

"Anyways you're free today, aren't you? Not like I care if you're not.. Come with me" she said..

"Me? Coming with you? May I know where?"

He asked knowing usually she would just go out and celebrate with mom and dad..

"You see.. Mom and dad are out for work.. I found this on the fridge" she took out out crumbled sticky note out from her pocket and threw it at Jake.. He caught it and looked at it..

[There's some food in the fridge.

Heat it before eating.

Order more if you're hungry.

We'll be back by tomorrow]

"Looks like they forgot it's my birthday too" she chuckled..

He could feel the sadness in her laugh.. How could they forget her birthday.. He wasn't surprised when they stopped wishing him happy birthdays but how could they forget Iris.. Iris was the perfect daughter anyone could ever ask for.. She was good at studies, sports, she could cook pretty great for her age too, she was beautiful inside and out..

"So where do you wanna go"

'That's the least I can do for her.. Although I'm not fun to hang out with but if that can make her feel better' he thought..

"You'll come?!" Once again her eyes lit up..

Jake couldn't help but smile at how innocent her baby sister was.. He nodded..

"Yes!!!" She said

"You better get ready asap.. We have a lot of places to go!!" She said ..

Just before she was about to leave his room, she paused for a while.. She gave him a mischievous look and Jake immediately knew she was about to do something..

"No!" He warned her..

She ran back to his bed grabbing his sheets and throwing them on the floor along with the pillows and sticking her tongue out at her brother before running back to her room..

He just stood there and stared at the mess his baby sister just made.. Once again, he let out a sigh before rolling up his sleeves and making his bed again..

Jake was waiting for his sister to come out of her room.. He's been waiting for almost 45 mins now till she finally came out..

"And you told me to be quick"

"Wasn't it quick enough for a girl? Try getting a girlfriend you'll understand" she rolled her eyes .. Just when she was about to grab her wallet she stopped..

"Who needs a wallet when you have a brother" she said..

It was jakes turn to roll his eyes..

"Now if you're done talking to yourself, can we leave already?"

"Who said I was talking to myself and why do you sound more excited than im? It's my birthday, not yours I can do whatever I want"

"Do I look like I've gotten 'excited' in the past 10 years?" He said pointing at his poker face..

Iris shook her head

" Anyways let's go!!!-"

She felt her phone vibrate.. It was a call from one of her friends.. She picked it up..

"Hii!.. Thanks!.. Yeah, actually I was going to spend my day together with my brother.. Really?.. I don't think he'll mind.. See ya!"

Jake who have been listening to the whole conversation, asked..

"I won't mind what?"

"Um.. Actually.. My friends want to hang out with me"

"Cool" he was about to head back to his room when Iris asked where he was going..

" Uh.. Back to my room?"

"Nope, You're gonna come along!" She said with a big smile..

" Woah woah there.. Hold it.. If you're talking about your those bunch of weird a*ses I totally mind it.. I ain't coming along to hang out with those bunch of minion friends of yours they're annoying as hell"

" Come on.. They just like to joke around a little"

" Joke around? They freaking flirt with me knowing I'm your brother and that I'm not okay with it.. Also.. I told you to stop hanging out with them"

" Come on as I just said, they just like to jo-"

"They make fun of you Iris.. And 'joking' around about something about someone that they're not comfortable with, is not okay"

"They're not like that anymore~ They've changed.. You Cathy judge them until you meet them.. Please~ It's my birthday! Please~"

She knew Jake could never say no to those puppy eyes.. And she was right..
