Detention - Chapter 5

I walked into the house, not expecting what was waiting for me on the other side of the front door. Sam was standing near the door with an angry look on her face. It was at that moment that I remembered that I got detention and that I didn't tell Sam that I was going to be late. My head lowered in regret that I put her through so much in just the time span of one week. "Where were you?" she asked worriedly. "I'm so sorry, I couldn't get a ride home before it started raining and my phone died," I told her, "but Liam gave me a ride when he found me walking in the rain."

I expected her next words to be: You are grounded. Oh, how wrong I was. "It's okay dear, just next time, try to find a way to let me know. On to more important matters. Why did you get detention?" she asked sternly. "I'm so sorry, I was day dreaming in my biology class and the teacher caught me. She was very disrespectful towards me, so my mouth took over." I said as I lowered my head down further.

"Well, you can't go out with your friends this weekend, okay?" she said, trying her best to sound stern. I smiled gratefully at her and said, "Yes, I understand. Thank you, Sam, for understanding." She smiled at me as I made my way up the stairs to shower and change my clothes. After that, I went downstairs for dinner. I took my seat and we began eating.

"So, Thomas, I heard by a certain Liam Wentworth that you are the smartest sophomore this year." I said as I looked at him with a smile. His eyes widened at what I said and he asked with his mouth still filled with food, "Wait, really?" "Yes, and he spoke about Dean too." I said as my gaze wandered to Dean. "You're pretty good at soccer, aren't you, despite what you say." He looked up at me and almost immediately lowered his gaze in shyness.

I laughed and soon they all joined in. "Sam, I never got around to asking this, but what do you do for a living?" I asked her. "Oh, um, I teach Freshman's at your school." she said chuckling. "Why haven't I seen you around school yet?" I asked her, confused. "Oh, because the Freshman's classes are far away from the Senior's classes for, well, their protection." she said laughing. We all joined in and continued with dinner. After cleaning the kitchen, we all said goodnight and went to sleep.

The next morning, I woke up on the wrong side of the bed, literally. My head was almost touching the ground as my bottom half of my body was the only weight keeping me on the bed. After I successfully got on my feet without causing a concussion, I started getting ready for detention. I put my favorite book in a small bag as I made my way downstairs for breakfast. "Hey, Sam. Is there any way you can drop me off at school at 7:45?" "Sure sweetie, just make sure you are ready before that."

A few minutes later I was getting into Sam's car so that I can go to detention till 12 o'clock today. I was so excited, not at all. When we arrived at school, I went in to the class where detention will be after I said bye to Sam. When I got there, I was the first one there. Looking at the time on my phone I saw it was already 8 am. I went to go sit at a desk when the teacher finally walked into the room dragging someone in here with him.

When the teacher turned, I saw that he was dragging Alec with him. For a split second we made eye contact, but that was enough to erupt the butterflies in my stomach. Trying to calm the butterflies down, I looked back up at him and saw that he was making his way over to the desk I am sitting at. My eyes widened and I started to wonder why he was approaching me when there were 10 other desks in the class.

He sat down on the chair next to me as the teacher began speaking. "You two will have to write a 2000-word essay on why you are here and how you could prevent doing it in the future," he told us as I looked at him with disbelief. He handed out each of us 4 papers and a pen and left the class closing the door behind him. I picked up the pen and started writing about how I wasn't paying attention in class and disrespected the teacher.

As I looked back up at Alec, I saw he was long gone. I looked around the class in confusion and saw that he was smoking in the corner of the class, out of the sight of the camera. I got up and walked towards him. I looked at him angrily when I asked, "Why aren't you writing the essay?" "Because I don't want to, so I'm not going to." he replied. I stomped back to the desk and continued writing the essay.

The rest of the time went by pretty quickly after I wrote the essay because I started reading the book I brought. The scent of smoke hung in the air while I was turning the pages in my book, engulfing each word to get past this horrible Saturday morning. Alec was walking around in the class, not saying anything in the process. Suddenly the teacher came back in the class and walked towards the desk I am sitting at. "I hope you have learned something by writing this essay, Emily and Alec," he said as he picked up our essays, "only if you wrote it though," he continued, gesturing towards Alec.

"You both can go home now, and I hope to not see either of you next weekend," he said. I got up, putting my book back into my bag and made my way out of the class. Next thing I knew, Alec was walking next to me as he started speaking, "Maybe you should consider rethinking what Flynn said." After that, he sped up, leaving me in pure confusion as to how he knew what Flynn said to me, or that he even knew Flynn at all. When i got outside the school, I barely saw a black Ford Mustang turn down the corner towards the west side of town.

I stood there, thinking about what Alec said, when I heard a car honk. I slightly jumped as I looked up at the source of the noise, I saw Sam waiting for me patiently. I got in and didn't say anything the whole ride home.
