Bayo mumbled an apology, his dreadlocks clacking softly as he hurried towards the exit, feeling Mrs. Christian's gaze boring into his back. The cool autumn air was a relief after the stifling atmosphere of the café.
The tension in the office was palpable when they returned. Dr. John stood near Ms. Anderson's desk, his face unreadable. The air felt charged, as if a storm was brewing indoors. "Bayo," he began, his voice carefully neutral, "regarding your evaluation—"
Ms. Anderson cut him off, her voice sharp enough to draw blood. "Bayo failed," she declared, her eyes never leaving Bayo's face. Her fingers gripped a pencil so tightly it seemed in danger of snapping. "From now on, he follows my instructions. To the letter."
Dr. John's brow furrowed, a flicker of concern crossing his face. He opened his mouth to speak, then closed it, his internal struggle visible in the tightening of his jaw.
