Returning to the secret chamber, William's consciousness dove into his mind, and as soon as his mental power entered, he heard the long-lost ding of the system's notification. William was overjoyed, as this sound signaled good news.
He had only heard this sound twice before, each time when his magic level increased. Sure enough, he saw a notification in the system panel indicating his magic level had risen.
His mental power suddenly increased tenfold, making him feel dizzy for a moment. After about ten minutes, he gradually returned to normal.
With a face full of delight, William extended his hand, and suddenly, five or six flying knives appeared around him, orbiting his body. Previously, he could only control two flying knives at once.
His physical strength and constitution also gradually increased under the magical energy provided by the system. If his physical strength and constitution were previously about seven to eight times that of a normal person, they were now around ten times. Moreover, William felt his body had broken through a bottleneck and was slowly improving.
As his physical strength increased, so did his mental power. His mental power now allowed him to scan a distance of over two hundred meters.
This was truly a double blessing. He had found the treasure and his abilities had improved. The only downside was that finding someone for physical training would now be troublesome. Driving was not an option, and Ambrosio alone couldn't handle him anymore.
This was indeed a happy dilemma.
Looking at the time, it was almost 4 AM. William set up alarm spells at both entrances to the secret passages and teleported back to his study at home.
Changing into his pajamas, he embraced the soundly sleeping Ambrosio and slept until dawn. After a Brazilian breakfast prepared by Ambrosio at 9 AM and sending off his girlfriend to her training, William was surprised to receive a call from the church.
"Good morning, William. Do you have a moment?"
"Just get to the point, Church. I have things to do," William said impatiently, sipping the bitter melon honey juice made by Ambrosio.
"Alright, I have a friend who wishes to meet you. She's also English and says she knew your grandfather."
"Knew my grandfather?" William thought. Anyone who knew Henry and was introduced by the church must be special. "Who is it? What do they want with me?"
"She used to be called Victoria Winslow. She's the mother of Ben Gates and now goes by Emily Appleton. I think you should meet her because she's one of your kind."
"One of our kind? I don't know her. Isn't she a university professor?" William felt a bit nervous but didn't let it show. "Sorry, I don't have time. Ben Gates' matter has nothing to do with me. If you want help, you need to find your colleagues. They are the ones handling it."
William didn't want Ben Gates to be cleared of suspicion yet. The Templar treasure wasn't the biggest; he remembered there was an even larger treasure waiting for him in Washington. At this point, it was better to let Ben Gates stay in prison until he found the City of Gold. Just as he was about to hang up, he heard the doorbell ring.
"Heh, I hear the doorbell. She should be at your doorstep. Whether you see her or not is up to you, but as a friend who has worked with you, I suggest you meet her. You need to understand what a woman might do for her son and ex-husband. Good luck, William."
The church hung up with a sly laugh.
William looked at the screen, seeing a kind-looking elderly woman. If the church hadn't revealed her identity, William would never have guessed she was his colleague, also from England.
Since she was here, not meeting her would imply William had something to hide. Thinking of this, William reluctantly pressed the switch to open the elevator door.
He walked to the elevator and, a minute later, it opened to reveal Victoria, smiling warmly and extending her hand. "Hello, William, I'm Victoria Winslow."
"Hello, ma'am, I'm William Devonshire. Please come in," William smiled, shaking her hand and noting the bag she carried. "Please follow me."
After exchanging pleasantries for half a day, William agreed not to mention in court that he knew Ben Gates had placed the genuine Declaration of Independence in the car. This promise pleased Victoria, though it wasn't what she had hoped for. Even proving that Ben didn't steal the real Declaration meant he still faced decades in prison.
Victoria picked up her bag from the floor. "Thank you. I believe these items should be returned to the Devonshire family. They are of no use to me anymore. I should be going now, William. Call me if you have any thoughts."
She handed William a business card. After seeing Victoria off in the elevator, William was puzzled. 'She's just leaving like that? Leaving the bag?'
Glancing at the bag on the table, William had scanned it earlier and confirmed it contained no dangerous items. Using his mental power, he sensed the contents seemed to be papers.
Could these documents be blackmail material or the dark history of the Devonshire family?
Opening the bag, he found an envelope containing some old letters. After a few glances, 'God,' he saw they were pictures of a young man and a young woman.
As he looked closer, the young man resembled his grandfather Henry, and the young woman looked like Victoria. Further examining the documents, he found a marriage certificate for Henry and Victoria.
'Good Lord,' William was stunned. He quickly dialed the number Victoria had given him.
The phone was answered after two rings. "Hello, William,"
Before Victoria could say more, William asked angrily, "Victoria, don't tell me Ben Gates isn't really a Gates but a Devonshire?"
"Hehe, sorry, William," Victoria laughed for a moment, then teasingly said, "I forgot to tell you Ben is only 34 years old. Those letters and certificates are from over 40 years ago. You should check the dates, William."
Hearing this, William breathed a huge sigh of relief. 'Thank God he's not a relative.' He had almost thought Ben Gates was his grandfather's illegitimate child. If that were true, William would not only refuse to rescue him but might also eliminate him.
"Then why did you and Henry break up? And what do you want by leaving these things with me? Blackmail?"
Victoria paused for a few seconds. "Open the door. I'm downstairs. Now we can formally talk. As Henry's wife, I, your grandmother, will speak with you, William."
"FXXK, you are not my grandmother; you were just Henry's ex-wife," William shouted angrily.
"But it's an indisputable fact that I married Henry."
