Age of Mana

In the year 2030 the Second Big Bang brings mana into the universe. The universe is changed and expanded by the mana causing monsters and demons to roam the earth. ________________________________________________________________ A young crow, more intelligent than its peers, was killed by a forest fire the day of the Second Big Bang. Years later the crow would reawaken to find itself as a newly birthed phoenix. With the help of a fire spirit the phoenix will gain strength and survive in this chaotic world. ________________________________________________________________ This is my first novel so I would appreciate constructive criticism. However if you don't like it don't read it. Don't waste both of our time. Thank you and I look forward to it.

Spiritual Magic Martial Art

Sunlight streamed through the lush green leaves of the forest, shining down on the face of Alilith.

Feeling the sunlight on her face Alilith groaned before turning onto her side. Slowly opening her eyes Alilith yawned and stretched her arms.

Alilitu looked around tiredly before her eyes landed on a certain still asleep drooling spirit.

Chuckling to herself Alilith stood up and stretched her arms and legs again. It was a strange feeling to Alilith. While she stretched when she was a crow it felt different in a human body.

After she stretched she looked around their campsite. The fire had long died out leaving the ashes of the wood used to burn it. Next to the fire was the skeleton of a wolf in a dried puddle of blood.

Thinking of the food she ate last night Alilith's mouth watered.

*Grooowwllll*

Not at all embarrassed by her rumbling stomach, Alilith walked over to Lao's tent. Feeling mishevious, Alilith picked up the wolf's skull put it above Lao's face.

The poor fire spirit was sleeping peacefully dreaming of the day she would inevitably become as powerful as the top spirits of fire like Salamander. She did not suspect that misfortune would befall her once she stopped sleeping.

"Hey, Lao" Alilith said softly shaking Lao while softly laughing to herself.

"Ugh... Five more decades please..." Lao said turning over to sleep more.

Alilith, not listening to the spirit, continued to shake the spirit vigorously.

"Okay okay I'll get up just stop shaking me." Lao said while rubbing her eyes tiredly.

Looking forward at the entrance of her tent Lao came face to face with the wolf's skull.

"Aaaaaahhhhhhh!!!!"

Gathering mana into her hands Lao immediately shot a fire ball right towards the skull effective blowing up both the skull and her tent.

10 minutes

Alilith was kneeling on the ground begging for forgiveness. Lao looked down on her from her position in the air.

"Fine I forgive you" Lao sighed "But never ever even consider doing that again."

"Yes ma'am, thank you for your forgiveness" Alilith said with her forehead still on the ground.

"Whatever" Lao said clearly not quite over it. "Lets just go get some food."

Alilith quickly stood up and followed Lao into the forest. As they walked through the forest Lao and Alilith constantly looked around for prey to hunt.

There are many exotic creatures in this forest. Most of the creatures are mutated creatures. However in this forest moat of the mutations are useless and are often a burden to the creature.

The mutated beast in front of Alilith and Lao is a prime example of how the mutation could inconvenience a creature.

The creature was a deer. The mutation this deer had was antlers infused with mana. While this may seem beneficial the high concentration of mana causes various issues since it didn't relieve the mutation to adapt to mana.

Fortunately or unfortunately the deer Alilith quickly put it out of its misery. Lao quickly started draining the blood of the deer.

"While we wait for the deer to be drained why don't we train" Lao said "After all power isn't everything, skill is also important to win a fight."

Alilith nodded in understanding showing Lao that she was paying attention even though a significant portion of her mind was thinking about eating the deer.

"A good example of skill over power is you fighting the King of the Forest yesterday. When you were fighting you clearly showed superior skill and intelligence." Lao stated "However if you didn't have that the gorilla would have definitely killed you easily as he had tremendous strength."

"But, you have no real skill besides magic in your human form. Sure you have superior stats but you if you were to face someone with the same stats you'd likely lose." Lao explained "So today were going to train you in some martial arts! While most spirits are small and physically weak we still have our methods of physical protection."

"We spirits use a combination of magic and physical abilities in a martial art called Spiritual Magic Martial Art. Today I will show you the basics of this martial art. Copy my movement."

Lao landed on the ground and made a fighting stance with Alilith doing the same. After that Lao started to slowly do a series of movements.

Alilith tried to copy the movements but failed miserably. While Lao's movements weren't perfect by any means they were leagues above Alilith's.

If Lao's movement was a carefully choreographed dance, Alilith's was a drunk man trying to do a square dance.

When Lao finished the moves she started to correct Alilith's movements and stance.

Alilith struggled with the series of movements. Though her coordination was now more than double the average man's she still couldn't get the moves right.

Alilith spent the next few hours practicing the movements. After that she collapsed on the ground in exhaustion.

"Alright well move on to the next part after we eat." Lao said

After Alilith heard that she'd get to eat she stood up and quickly left to get fire wood.

'What happened to her being tired' Lao thought.

When Alilith came back Lao was already stripping the deer down to its skeleton.

Alilith set up the fire and chose suitable sticks for putting on meat.

"Next time you're dismantling the food." Lao said tiredly "Do you expect a weak spirit like me to do all the hard work, I refuse to do it. Look at you you're strong you do it."

"I don't know how though"

"I'll teach you. Come here ill show you some of it."

Lao started showing Alilith how to dismantle mutated beasts. Alilith paid close attention to it cause it meant she could eat faster.

After Lao's dismantling lesson Alilith started to eat the deer. Suddenly she stopped eating and looked up at Lao with a guilty look on her face.

"I'm sorry, I forgot you have to eat too. I've already eaten most of the food and you didn't even eat last night." Alilith said feeling guilty about her actions.

"No its fine spirits only need mana to survive especially mana of their type. Luckily you give off a lot of excess fire mana which gives me more than enough nourishment." Lao said "We can eat food though but its more of a hobby."

Sighing in relief Alilith continued to gorge herself with food.

'How does she eat that sloppily but still manage to not get her or her face dirty? In fact how did she not get dirty from sleeping on the ground?' Lao thought to herself before deciding not to think about it.

After Alilith ate to her heart's content they started to train in Spitirtual Magic Martial Art again.

This time Alilith was not as clumsy as before. zthough she messed up sometimes it was a whole lot more precise.

After she practiced for a couple hours Lao stopped her.

"Now that you've reached a reasonable level on the basic movements you can move on to the magic part." Lao said while taking stance once more.

While Alilith watched Lao she noticed that Lao formed fire over her fists and feet. This time when Lao performed the movements the fire flowed along and flames leapt from her fists during certain movements.

Alilith started to copy her once more coating her hands and feet in flames. This time she performed the moves correctly and due to her surprising talent with magic she was able to get the flames to work almost identically to Lao.

'That took me a week to get right.' Lao thought sadly 'Oh how the world favors the talented.'

Again Alilith continued to practice the martial art for hours. She enjoyed the feeling of moving her body while using magic.

Suddenly a notification went off.

[Skill gained]

[Spiritual Magic Martial Art (Fire) Lv 1]

[The martial arts of the spirits. Created by high ranking spirits to fight more efficiently. This version is used by the spirits of fire.]

"Oh, I got the skill." Alilith said

"Really!? I mean thats great, good job Alilith" Lao said

'This is bad! I'm only level two in it if she surpasses me I'll lose my position as her superior. I've got to stop her some how.'

"Hey, Alilith why don't we stop for today, you look really tired lets go rest." Lao said trying to convince Alilith.

"I'm not tired yet though. I want to continue." Alilith said looking at Lao with a confused face.

'Damn, my plan didn't work I'm losing my superiority' Lao cried in her mind. Then a thought came to her mind.

'Wait a minute, if Alilith gets strong I can use her as a body guard and no one will mess with me! Mwehehehehehehe...'

'Thats a weird laugh Alilith though looking at Lao with concerned eyes.

After a few more hours Alilith finally stopped practicing. She had reached level 2 in the skill making her equal to Lao. Not that she knew that.

They ate dinner and sat around the camp fire talking about the world.

'The world is much bigger than I though.' Alilith thought to herself, 'I want to see it all and keep getting stronger. This is way more fun than fighting for left over bread in the streets. If only I knew that crows weren't the top of the world then.'

After a while Alilith laid down to sleep for the night and Lao flew over to her and laid next to her.

"What are you doing?" Alilith asked

"I blew up my tent cause of a certain someone, remember" Lao said "You're now my protection from the forest. Good night."

Alilith not particularly caring about that just closed her eyes to go to sleep. Lao stayed awake for a bit longer while feeling uncomfortable on the floor but fell asleep eventually.
