Compromise

The table was quiet for a while as everyone stared down at their plates, no one felt comfortable enough to say anything. Jinn fumed while Kai held his hand under the table, squeezing it in the hopes of calming him down.

Jinn squeezed Kai's hand back and suddenly he stood up, "I think it'd be best if we left."

"Jinn please sit down, and everyone calm down, don't let the meal that your Mother worked hard on go to waste." Said Mr. Wilkins. Jinn and his Father stared at each other for a moment before Jinn sat back down, somewhat pouting. Jinn placed his hand on Kai's thigh squeezing it gently as he stared down at his nearly full plate, he was sorry for even bringing Kai along at this point.

After dinner Jinn cleared, his and Kai's plate and immediately retired to his old bedroom that they were staying in. Kai sat Indian style on the bed watching a game show while Jinn laid back on the bed with his arm over his face.

"I'm sorry." he suddenly said.

Turning slightly, Kai allowed a smile onto his face, "It's fine, it's no big deal." He said turning back to the Tv. Suddenly the bed shifted behind Kai and he felt Jinn's arms enveloping his entire body.

"It's fine Jinn.", said Kai holding Jinn's arms as they rested on his chest.

"It's not fine, we shouldn't of came. This is the reason I don't visit often, there's always something.", said Jinn letting go of Kai and falling back on the bed.

Kai turned around and placed himself under Jinn's arm, laying his head on Jinn's chest. He could see that Jinn was in low spirits and wanted to take his mind off of things. "Hey, why don't we have a movie night? I can go grab some snacks?" said Kai.

Jinn turned his head to Kai letting a small smile grace his face, "Sure, why not. It's pretty late now, everyone should be in bed. Hurry back." Smiling back, Kai got up and made his way out of the room and down the dimly lit hallway that was indeed quiet this time of night.

Kai tip toed his way down the stairs and into the dimly lit kitchen, the only light on shinning above the stove. Reaching into the cabinet Kai began to grab different snacks.

"There are hoho's!" Kai gasped as he reached on his tippy toes for the chocolate cream filled, rolled up cakes on the top shelf and suddenly someone's body pressed up against his, grabbing the cakes, Kai jumped, letting out a another gasp.

"You scared the shit outta me." Said Kai quickly turning around, figuring it was Jinn, but to his surprise, 'it wasn't Jinn, it was Art.

"Oh, did I? I'm sorry, you just looked like you were struggling so much and since I'm taller, why not put it to use?" said Art with a smile on his face.

"Eh...right...thanks.", said Kai with a nervous smile as he reached for the cakes in Art's hands, but Art pulled the cakes away, closer to his body, "However the reason these are on the top shelf is because they're mine." he said teasingly.

Kai furrowed his brows and tightened one corner of his mouth, "If you're not willing to share, why go through the trouble? You could've just told me those were yours." Said Kai, grabbing the other snacks to leave the kitchen, but Art moved over, placing himself in the way, so that Kai was stuck in-between himself and the counter.

"I never said that I wouldn't share, what can you offer me?" said Art with a smirk on his face.

Kai rolled his eyes, "If I want hoho's that bad, I'll just go buy some." Said Kai attempting to maneuver around Art, but Art grabbed his arm, pushing him back onto the counter and leaning down so that they were face to face. Art let out a soft chuckle as the two of them stood closely, bodies pressed together and noses inches apart. Kai stood still, completely flabbergasted by Art's sudden advancement.

"Wha..what ar…?" said Kai, but Art cut him off.

"You're adorable, I see why my brother likes you.", said Art. Again, Kai furrowed his brows, pushing Art away from him, but Art refused to move.

"Move." Kai said firmly.

"Tell you what, allow me to taste those pretty lips and I'll let you leave with the whole box, deal?" said Art leaning in, but Kai quickly turned his head, roughly pushing Art this time, causing him to stumble backward a bit. The two made eye contact for a moment, Kai's face serious, but a smirk on Arts. Kai took a deep breath, quickly walking, brushing past Art as he left the kitchen, he couldn't get out of there fast enough.

With the snacks in hand, Kai rushed through the living room, he could hear Art's slippers scraping the floor behind him as he walked. "I don't mind chasing after what I want Kai." said Art chuckling as he followed behind Kai.

Skipping steps, Kai quickly made his way upstairs. As he grabbed for the doorknob it opened for him, "Oh, there you are, I was about to come see what was taking you so long." said Jinn backing up to let Kai in.

"Having a movie night? Mind if I join?" said a voice coming from behind Kai. Not bothering to glance behind him, Kai practically ran inside, "We've had enough company for one night." Said Kai, closing the door in Art's face and locking it. When he turned around Jinn had an eyebrow raised, "What's wrong?" said Jinn noticing how strange Kai was acting.

Kai let out a soft exhale, cleared his throat and forced a smile, "Ahh...nothing, nothing. Let's pick a movie." He said walking past Jinn, remaining as calm as possible.

After a while of snacking and watching a horror movie, the two drifted off to sleep.

Making a point to get up at five a.m. and skip out before anyone woke up, Jinn showered and sat on the bed to wake Kai, flicking his perfect sharp nose until his eyes opened.

"Mmmmh." Kai groaned, closing his eyes again, letting out a soft yawn.

"Wake up, it's time to go." Said Jinn leaning down and kissing Kai on the lips. Kai opened his eyes once more squinting them from the light on the ceiling that shined down above him and sat up. "It's still dark outside, why are we leaving so early? Don't you want to say goodbye to everyone?" said Kai yawning loudly.

"Not really, my Dad will understand." Said Jinn standing up and pulling Kai out of bed.

"And what about your Mom?" said Kai rubbing his eyes as he stretched.

"To be honest I don't really care." Said Jinn as he reached down to grab Kai's and his bag from under the bed to pack.

"Your Mom might be a hard ass, but I'm sure she means well. She just wants what's best for her son is all." said Kai.

"Go shower, I want to be gone in the next half hour." said Jinn, ignoring what Kai had to say.

Kai sighed as he grabbed a towel, "If you were my son, I'd just want to make sure that you were happy. Remember, you only get one Mother in this lifetime." said Kai as he turned to go into the bathroom. Jinn stopped packing and let out a heavy sigh, even if that was the case, some things couldn't be forgiven so easily.

Kai had showered and gotten dressed quickly like Jinn had asked him to. Soon after, the two quietly made their way out of the Wilkins home. Jinn drove in silence while Kai's head nodded as he couldn't help but to fall back to asleep.

After an hour drive through morning traffic, the two made it back to the city. Jinn stopped at a red light and glanced over at Kai, his pretty lips slightly parted and his eyes closed as his long eyelashes rested on the top of his cheekbones. Jinn gently ran his fingers through Kai's dark loosely curled hair that he hadn't bothered to tie up this morning and smiled. The conversation he and Kai had this morning kept playing over and over in his mind. Maybe there was some truth to what Kai had said, maybe his Mother did only care about his happiness. Afterall, what parent didn't want the best for their child? Jinn sighed as he gently touched Kai's cheek, "why can't either of you see that I'm already happy because you're in my life?", Jinn thought, removing his hand from Kai's face, directing his attention back to the road and stepping on the gas as the light turned green.

"Kai…Kai, wake up, you're home." Said Jinn. Kai opened his eyes to see Jinn leaning over him, "Oh shit, I didn't realize I fell asleep." Said Kai stretching and getting up out of the car.

"It's fine, but listen, I have something I need to take care of, so I'll probably see you tomorrow. I'll call you later." said Jinn as he wrapped his arms around Kai, kissing him on the forehead. Kai hugged Jinn back, and the two parted ways.

The next morning Kai woke to the sound of his alarm clock and got up to shower. After he got dressed, he smoothed his hair back into a low bun, and left for work.

"I better get gas now while the lots empty." Kai thought as he pulled into the near empty parking lot of a gas station." Kai got out of his car, and walked into the gas station, the smell of coffee was certainly inviting first thing in the morning.

"Can I get an iced mocha, cream and sugar, less ice." Sai Kai to the barista.

"Iced mocha with less ice, I'll have to remember that.", said a voice coming from behind. Kai turned around to see the blonde haired, young faced intern Brandon.

Kai let a smirk onto his face, "I appreciate it, but don't bother. I can buy my own drinks from now on."

"Uhh...oh...okay then." Brandon said awkwardly as if he wanted to ask why, but didn't.

"Your coffee sir." Said the barista. Kai took his coffee, nodding to Brandon with a smile and walked away. The last thing he needed was Jinn giving him trouble about Brandon bringing him things again.

After getting his coffee and gas Kai made his way to work, with time to spare. As he walked into the building Kai's phone rang, pulling his phone out of his back pocket, Kai frowned when he saw that it was Dana. "Why is she calling me this early?" he said aloud. Deciding he didn't want to be annoyed this early in the morning Kai put his phone on silent, placing it back in his pocket.

The time was about midday and Kai's lunch break was nearing, he hadn't seen much of Jinn this morning due to another coworker's project presentation, "he should be free now." Kai thought. As he stood up and turned around, Jinn was already standing there.

"Heya Ji….." Kai said with a smile on his face, but it quickly faded as he noticed the look on Jinn's face. "Something wrong Jinn?" he asked nervously.

"You have a visitor in my office." Said Jinn in a low flat voice, his expression unchanging.

"Oh…who…" Kai stopped talking as Jinn turned around to leave, not bothering to listen to his question.

"Ohhhh..kay." said Kai awkwardly as he followed Jinn to his office. The two walked in silence, and Kai couldn't help but to occasionally glance at Jinn, why was he so short with him? As the two reached the office, Jinn opened the door and it became clear why he was so irritated, Dana had come to pay Kai a visit at work.

"I'll give you two some privacy." Said Jinn stepping out of the way to let Kai into his office. The two made eye contact as they passed each other, and Kai could see that Jinn was for sure bothered by the sudden visit from his boyfriends still legal wife. When the door closed Kai turned around to see Dana, "What are you doing here?" he asked in a nicer tone this time.

Dana twiddled her thumbs as she looked down at the ground and back up at Kai, something she did when she was nervous. "I tried to call, but you didn't answer. I…I need a place to stay. I broke up with the guy I was with and he kicked me out."

Kai placed his index finger and thumb, pinching the bridge of his nose for a second, "I can put you in a hotel and when I get paid, I'll help you get set up in a new apartme.."

"I don't want to stay in a hotel, you know that." said Dana suddenly interrupting Kai. He raised his eyebrows, letting out a sigh, it was indeed true that Dana didn't like staying in hotels. Years ago during a summer vacation, she and her friend had someone almost break into their room while they slept, and it traumatized her.

"You don't have any friends you can stay with?" said Kai somewhat hopeful.

Dana shook her head, "you know all my friends and family live out of town. Have you forgotten the sacrifice that I made for you to get this job?"

Kai let out a sigh, although Dana had a point, that she had left everything behind and moved to the west coast for him, he couldn't just let her stay with him, things were different now, but he couldn't turn her away either.

"…Fine." Kai finally said unsure what else to do at this point. Without warning Dana jumped for joy, throwing her arms around Kai. Kai froze for a moment, keeping his arms tight at his sides as he took in the familiar smell of Dana's sweet pea perfume. Although they had been separated for months, Dana hadn't changed a bit, she still wore the same perfume and gave out hugs at random.

"I'm..I'm sorry." Said Dana quickly letting go of Kai with a smile on her face.

Kai cleared his throat, reaching into his pocket and handed Dana his apartment key, I don't get off for another five hours, so make yourself at home or whatever, I'll walk ya out." Said Kai.

"Okay." Said Dana with a smile as she took the key from Kai's hand and followed him out of the office.

After Kai walked Dana out of the building, he made his way straight to Jinn's office, not bothering to knock this time. Jinn let out a soft sigh, continuing to read building plans as Kai came in and sat down at the chair on the opposite side of his desk.

"Jinnnnn! Is that how you treat your boyfriend?" Kai whined as he leaned forward, placing both elbows on the desk, resting his chin on his hands.

Jinn raised his eyes, to see Kai cutely pouting on the other side of his desk. Unable to control his smirk, he fixed his eyes back to what he was doing, "And what can I do for you?"

Kai sat up straight and exhaled heavily, "there's no easy way to say this so, I'm just going to come out and say it." As Kai spoke Jinn quickly looked up at Kai, what nonsense had happened this time?

"Dana got kicked out and needs a place to stay and she's too afraid to stay in a hotel." Said Kai

Jinn roughly put down the building plan that was in his hands, "So what are you saying?" he asked although he already knew, he just wanted Kai to say it.

"I'm gonna let her stay with me until I can get her an apartment." Said Kai nervously looking at his lap.

"No." said Jinn firmly.

Kai quickly looked up at Jinn, who had an angry look on his face. "What do you mean no? I can't just.."

Jinn quickly cut Kai off, "Why can't you? Why is someone who left you, your responsibility?!" said Jinn, his voice slightly raised.

Kai furrowed his brows, exhaling heavily "Because I brought her here, she has no friends or family here because of me. Why are you being like this? Aren't I with you?!" said Kai also raising his voice.

"Because I…." Jinn suddenly stopped himself and took a deep breath, exhaling heavily. "Because I care about you, and I know every time she comes around you become a different person." Kai looked down at his lap, taking a deep breath, of course that was true, but what could he do?

The room was silent for a moment when Jinn suddenly exhaled heavily, "So let her stay, but you come live with me."
