02 - Why Not?

[Congratulations player for becoming one of the 11 Legendaries. You are now the Legendary Blacksmith! Instead of receiving 5 stats points for each level, the Legendary class will earn you an extra 5 stats points for each level.]

"Wait a second, did I become a Blacksmith?!?!" Damien complained aloud with anger and frustration. "I don't want to be a blacksmith... my dream of building my epic character, my dream of having legendary feats in the game, playing championships, guiding a team to a victory... How am I going to do that as a blacksmith? I'm going to stay in the shadows making swords for others to shine?!"

"If I could change classes, even a battlemage wouldn't be a problem…" Unfortunately, Destiny Online had already made it clear that once destiny defined a good class for someone, it would be impossible to change or delete the character. The only chance for someone to request another class would be in the dark room at the entrance, but that would result in the class trainer getting annoyed and sending in their place someone else with a class 2 degrees less than the trainer who was previously. "So for me, no class change..."

Looking at his own inventory, Damien saw a letter and a sword.

Ignoring the letter, he took the sword and played with it as much as he could. This was the first time that he had held a real sword. When he trained while watching YouTube videos, Damien used his father's machete to try to replicate the movements. Holding a sword was truly different from what he imagined it would be; it was as if it didn't fit him that well.

Looking at the letter, Damien saw that it was a letter of recommendation that he should deliver to the mayor of the village.

Basically, the letter stated he was a young man from a country town who was noticed by a powerful man from the capital for having a good talent. As a test, the man had issued this letter of recommendation to open the first doors for the young man, and he would have to depend only on himself to know how far he could go in the future.

Following the direction that the signs pointed through the woods, Damien finally arrived at the village, which, just as he imagined for a novice village, was very small and very busy, as it was the day of the game's launch.

According to the game's developer, there were thousands of novice villages, which as soon as players finished the tutorial, would be teleported to some of the main countries and spread around the world in order to prevent a novice village from being left with an unmanageable number of players.

And seeing the hundreds of people in front of him running around and asking around the city how to get missions, Damien realized that apparently, despite having a large number of players, each wore a different outfit than the other, which showed that they all came from different backgrounds, as if each one were unique, which gave players a great sense of protagonism.

Unfortunately, this also caused players to feel like the heroes of the world, even if they only had a basic class of [Warrior], the most common class in Destiny Online, and they had started acting like assholes with NPCs demanding missions and rewards, scaring the people of the village.

Damien was in no hurry; one thing he always valued in life was knowledge. It was often best to take a step back and watch from a distance as other people advanced, then pass them while they were still trapped.

And that was exactly what he was doing now. Without the slightest desire to enter the midst of those 50 people who surrounded each of the important people of the village and shouted for missions, he just sat at the side of the town square and watched people run around like headless chickens.

"Are you having fun, boy?" An older man's voice reached Damien's ears.

When he looked around, he noticed a man with tanned skin, long black hair, and well-muscled arms carrying a cart full of basic ores like iron. Looking at the man and looking at himself, Damien couldn't help but laugh inwardly as he realized how similar the man was to himself.

"Yes, I am. This disorganized scene is totally different from what I initially imagined would happen. The scene of a peaceful and welcoming city was completely destroyed in my head by these crazy people," Damien commented matter-of-factly as he continued to watch people scurry around.

"Hahaha, I have to agree with you. Here it was exactly as you imagined it yesterday, but for some reason, many people received recommendations from someone during the last week, but most came willingly looking for some new opportunity. But just like the others are so desperate for attention and opportunities, you got my attention by being so calm." The man turned to watch the other young people running around the city.

"Well, I'm afraid I'm not the best person to be pleading with others for opportunities. In the worst case scenario, I'll just go into the forest and make my own opportunities there," Damien said calmly.

This surprised the man. Usually when there was a task for that person to do, they would hardly deviate from the task to do something more difficult on their own. Human tendency was always to go for the easiest solution, and when knowing that the task would take the person where he wanted, many just chose to follow the tasks without thinking about why. But incredibly, this young man he met at random was actually going against the tide and getting ready to possibly abandon tasks and maybe a recommendation, just to make a way for himself.

"Well, if you're that free, why not help me with my job? I'll make it up to you." The man held out his hand with a warm smile on his face.

What Damien hated the most were bosses who wanted to exploit employees, or corrupt bosses who abused employees. During his few years in the job market, Damien had already been fired 3 times for hitting his boss or threatening a superior who wanted to abuse him or humiliate him in some way.

One time, Damien had just been honest with the customer and said that it was impossible to make a discount for just them because he was not authorized to do so as a clerk. But as soon as his boss saw that the customer was a beautiful woman, the man began to boast in front of the woman and grant discounts to her on the products, saying that Damien was just a disposable employee and didn't know what he was saying.

The man continued boasting about the "power" he had to be able to fire others like Damien, which infuriated the young man, who was just doing what he was instructed to do. If the manager had just given Damien advice to do it differently after the client left, there would have been no problem, but because of the words the man said to the woman just because he had been attracted to her, Damien was stressed and got up from the chair he was sitting on and threatened his boss.

But seeing this man in front of him with such an honest smile on his face made Damien's heart warm and he felt that one day maybe working for this man wasn't as bad as it would seem naturally.

Even though he had come to this world to create a powerful legacy and become a legendary warrior among the players, Damien had never forgotten that a game was made to amuse people, and if it seemed fun to accompany this man to work with him, instead of running around the city desperately begging for missions, Damien would surely go after the man.

Not to mention that apparently this man was a blacksmith, just like his class, so in the worst case Damien would find out if being a blacksmith was truly a boring class, or if maybe he could like it a little.

"Very well, why not?" Damien squeezed the man's hand back with a smile.
