CHAPTER 20
As Elmi explored the world of magic, he finally succeeded in persuading his mother, Elizabeth, to buy him a genuine alchemy and potion set. However, there was one condition: the ingredients she would provide were primarily meant for rudimentary-level potions and concoctions.
Elizabeth was cautious, knowing that her son's abilities and interests in magic were far beyond his years. She wanted to ensure his safety and the safety of those around him. The rudimentary ingredients would allow Elmi to practice and hone his skills without delving into more complex and potentially dangerous potions.
Elmi accepted the condition with a mix of enthusiasm and understanding. He knew that he had to prove his responsibility before he could venture into advanced potion-making. The rudimentary ingredients were a starting point, a step toward a future where he could explore the world of alchemy and brewing more deeply. He eagerly set up his potion-making area, ready to begin his journey into this fascinating realm of magic.
In the last 5 years, he had read everything he could find about alchemy and potion-making. Since his body was not fit enough to train wand spells too much, he had to spend his time deepening his knowledge base, and he had ready up to 6th-year students.
In just one year, Elmi mastered rudimentary-level potions. These basic concoctions provided an essential foundation for his future studies in potion-making and alchemy. Some of the rudimentary potions he learned included Forgetfulness Potion, which induces short-term memory loss in the drinker; Pepperup Potion, which cures the common cold and provides a warming sensation to the drinker; Potion of the Eagle Eye that, which temporarily enhances the drinker's eyesight; Cough Potion that Cures coughing and related symptoms and many more that provided small benefits.
Elmi's progress in alchemy was indeed remarkable, particularly because it didn't depend on his magical power but rather on his knowledge, precision, and understanding of the properties of various magical ingredients. His dedication and intellect allowed him to make significant advancements in this field, expanding his expertise in alchemy at a rapid pace compared to his limited repertoire in wand magic.
As he ventured deeper into the intricacies of alchemy, he realized that his unique ability to see magical auras and sense mana fluctuations could be applied to this field as well. This gave him an edge in detecting subtle changes and magical properties within the ingredients he used.
Elmi's eagerness to explore the world of potions often clashed with his mother's strict guidelines. Elizabeth had always been a cautious woman, especially when it came to her son's magical pursuits. She believed in keeping a firm grip on the reins of Elmi's magical education to ensure his safety. That's why she allowed only a limited range of ingredients for him to work with in his potion-making experiments. It was a source of frustration for Elmi, who constantly sought to expand his knowledge and skills.
Frustrated with the constraints of his potion-making endeavors, Elmi attempted to sneak in extra ingredients that he purchased with his saved pocket money. However, his daring act didn't go unnoticed. Elizabeth, with her uncanny ability to discern even the subtlest changes in their magical household, quickly discovered Elmi's secret stash of ingredients. She confronted him and issued an ultimatum. She sternly warned him against such actions, emphasizing the importance of following the rules she had set for his magical studies.
However, Elizabeth, always fair and understanding, also provided an alternative to satisfy her son's insatiable curiosity. She decided to hire a skilled potion-maker to serve as Elmi's private teacher for the year leading up to his enrollment at Hogwarts. This way, he could further his potion-making skills and knowledge under the guidance of an experienced practitioner.
Elmi's private potion-making teacher was Professor Eustace Thistlewick, a wiry and elderly wizard with a sharp mind and a mischievous twinkle in his eyes. His long, flowing beard, which was often stained with various potion ingredients, added to his eccentric appearance. Professor Thistlewick was a master of his craft and had a profound love for the art of potion-making. He had an unyielding dedication to instilling his knowledge in his young apprentice, Elmi. Under his guidance, Elmi not only honed his skills in brewing but also developed a deep appreciation for the subtleties and complexities of potion-making.
Professor Eustace Thistlewick, a highly respected and experienced potion-maker, found himself utterly captivated by Elmi Fawley's innate talent and unrelenting passion for potion-making. From their very first lesson, Professor Thistlewick was deeply impressed by Elmi's remarkable aptitude for the subject. His quick thinking, ability to grasp complex concepts, and the sheer depth of his questions and insights into potion-making left the professor in awe.
Moreover, what truly stood out was Elmi's responsible and disciplined approach to his studies. He showed an unwavering commitment to safety protocols and an acute understanding of the meticulous nature of potion-making. Professor Thistlewick recognized that Elmi had a rare gift for not only brewing potions but also for understanding the underlying magical principles that governed them. It was only for the rudimentary level potions, so it wasn't something groundbreaking, but it was truly shocking for him when the person stating those was a 10-year-old child.
The professor even managed to teach him two potions at the skill level of a second-year student, like the Boil-Cure Potion and the prank potion of Babbling Beverage, which rendered them unable to speak clearly.
...
Dumbledore had made a deal with Elizabeth; as long as she or anyone in that estate didn't talk about who Harry was and what is his place in magical Britain, they could have connections with him. She was to never teach him anything about magic. But Dumbledore underestimated Elmi and forgot about him; this was not his fault.
Who could have known a 10-year-old would have the soul of a grown-up and could comprehend the basic magical theory from books without any help? Whenever they went inside the woodland to play, Elmi would teach about basic magical theory, basic alchemy, and other magical subjects that wouldn't need a wand.
