DAISY

Daisy kept walking up and down her home. "Anything wrong?" Her sister asked. "No, nothing! "She quickly answered. They lived downstreet near the railways. She had to catch an express train to work every morning. She hated them still: how they overcrowded.

She hated the perverts in the trains who always harassed her. She always got into meaningless arguments with her. They kept blaming the government and she wondered every time" what does the government have to do with you brushing my jeans! You bunch of low lives !!"

She hated people. Her brother was in the hospital, in a comma and he had not gotten any better. Huge bills were pending and even the neighborhood she had walked door to door did not help. They did raise only a few coins from some families who also complained.

Her neighborhood was not the least of her problems. It was full of insecurity. Somebody got beaten up, somebody got pickpocketed, somebody got...Jesus. She hated it. She thought about the rich, why she hated them and found nothing. No answer. Maybe it was the hate coming from them having and 'them' lacking. Maybe it was the hate of them not caring a bit about their world.

She really hoped someone would walk in and help her brother. Somebody who had a good heart. Would the person be poor ..no ...poor people only cared about their own problems. Would he be rich?no, rich people wanted nothing to do with poor people. But she should have known better.

She thought about him. What was his name again? She would ask him when they met again. But wait, would there be a next time. She shuddered. A part of her wanted to see him once more, a part of him hated him. She saw him with a girl. Yeah, at the movies. What did that mean. He was dating. of course, he was. What else? She smirked. She did not want to see him.

Suddenly her mum called her to the kitchen. She said she felt unwell. She was going to rest. She decided to take over and cook for the family. As she made dinner, she remembered her father. She hated him. She burnt with rage. It was good she saw him no more.

Although her mum kept on defending him.

"Why do you always defend him!"

"He cared for us; we never went without !!" Her mum answered.

She remembered when he would come home with gifts. He loved her she knew, in the bottom of her heart.

He was always out of their lives. Doing investigations in probably an unknown part of the world. He was a lead crime investigator. A very successful one. Suddenly he was killed.

She remembered their last talk. It was on a Christmas day.

"What do you want my daughter, for Christmas!" He smiled

"Mmh ...only ask for you to come home!!"she cried

Her dad did not answer. He walked over to her mum. Her mum too shed some tears. It was evident he could not do so.

Life changed so fast. They had to move out of their apartment because they could not afford it. Then her brother got shot in the neighborhood in the head. Trauma followed. To make matters worse the surgery went wrong. she had to sell their car to cater for his hospital bills. She looked down at the cooking pot and realized the eggs were shriveled.

She quickly downed them in the sink and started cooking something else. Her sister came in to help. Diana wondered why Daisy always got absent minded. Maybe Diana was too young to understand, Daisy thought.

" Daisy, I met someone today. " Diana said

"Who?"

"A journalist, I told him about my interest!"

Will Diana understand what her family is going through?
