Complicated Identity!

Duke bought half a bottle of  liquor, a pound of beef, and was in a good mood. However, he suddenly noticed the peculiar gazes of his neighbors around him. Could it be that these people also know about my power test?

Duke found this amusing. Pushing the door open, he saw two unfamiliar figures sitting on his familiar couch. They were dressed in police uniforms, and Monica was sitting nearby, looking uneasy and avoiding eye contact. There were two cups of hot tea on the table.

"You must be Duke, right? We've been waiting for you," one of them, a Mediterranean-looking man in his forties with a slightly overweight build, walked over with a smile. He patted Duke's shoulder lightly, and with his other hand, he closed the door quite naturally, causing the room to darken slightly.

"I'm Duane, the deputy director of the LF District Police Station in J City. Don't be nervous. We're here today just to ask you a few simple questions."

Police station? Duke nodded and sat down next to Monica. Their eyes met, and Duke felt somewhat relieved. There wasn't much anxiety in his sister's eyes, so things should be fine.

"And this is your sister, right? She's really cute, though she doesn't seem to talk much. We're here today just to get a better understanding. Recently, you seem to have disposed of a few bodies while bravely helping others. Is that true?"

Duke's heart skipped a beat. Just as I feared! He thought that the matter had been cleared when he passed through the checkpoint of the law enforcement team. He didn't expect that it would resurface. However, this made sense. At the time, the law enforcement team had been facing a life-and-death situation and had just been rescued. Moreover, he had saved their lives, so they probably overlooked it.

Though it made sense for the local police to be involved, Duke sensed that there was something strange about these two men. They weren't merely here for a routine inquiry. Fortunately, Duke had already rehearsed this scenario in his mind, and after a slight pause, he replied, "Yes, that's what happened. Is there a problem?"

Duane maintained his friendly smile and casually asked, "I'm quite curious. You just fought against the infected and should have been scared. So, why did you think of disposing of the bodies?"

Duke noticed that while Duane was speaking, the other man, who seemed to be his subordinate, kept flickering his gaze between Duke and Monica's faces. Though he remained silent, Duke felt a greater sense of pressure from the man with the hooked nose than from the deputy director.

"Because the school has publicized that ordinary people who are scratched or bitten by infected individuals could turn into zombies. I was worried that they might also turn into zombies," Duke's response mirrored what he had told Alexander. He was well aware that the law enforcement team and the police might be separate systems, but information involving four human lives would surely be shared. Therefore, there was no need to lie.

"I see. Very cautious indeed, Duke. You deserve praise. It indicates that our school's education is becoming more practical," Duane's smile remained unchanged. He reached for a cup of tea, but when he saw the worn, chipped cup, he subtly wrinkled his brow.

Instead, he tapped his fingers on the coffee table. Thump, thump, thump. It sounded like a heartbeat. He didn't speak, and the man with the hooked nose remained silent as well. Duke and Monica maintained their composure, creating a notably quiet atmosphere in the room.

Duane was somewhat surprised. It wasn't Duke's account that surprised him – he had already heard these explanations, which were synchronized with the law enforcement team's version. And the law enforcement team didn't think there was an issue. What surprised him was Duke's attitude. For a high school student, he was too calm.

Initially, when there were dead bodies in the slums and nobody reported it, Duane was considering handling it as a result of an infected attack. But today, someone came, and their background was not insignificant. He had no choice but to come here. He also knew that Duke had recently been featured as a civilian role model by the media, and some methods were inconvenient to use.

Duane found himself in a dilemma for a moment, and just then, the man with the hooked nose beside him squinted and said, "Logically speaking, after you took down an infected, if it was out of fear, shouldn't your first instinct have been to wake up the law enforcement team?"

"With them around, even if there were any transformations, there was no need for you to take matters into your own hands. Moreover, Alexander was severely injured at the time. Instead of rushing to help him, you thought of disposing of the bodies? Kid, I advise you to be honest. If you know something, spill it." The man with the hooked nose's eyes emitted a cold and indifferent glint. His gaze felt like that of a venomous snake, fixed on Duke's face. For a moment, Duke's eyebrows twitched involuntarily, and his heart rate slightly increased.

This man had asked him the most difficult question! At the time, Alexander and the others were in a state of escape from death. After waking up, they were overwhelmed with joy, not thinking about these details. However, from an outsider's perspective, Duke's story did have some inconsistencies.

Fortunately, Duke was prepared. He furrowed his brows and said, "Officer, please be mindful of your attitude. I'm cooperating with your investigation, not being treated as a suspect. Furthermore, as you've mentioned, it's based on logic. As a high school student, I don't need to deal with infected individuals at all. In that situation, my first thought was to stay alive. Is there a problem with that?"

Seeing Duke stand his ground, the man with the hooked nose narrowed his eyes, exuding a powerful intent to kill. Just a glare from his eyes made Duke feel his hair uncontrollably stand on end! This guy was dangerously intense!

In fact, when Duke had just entered, he had noticed it. Although Duane seemed to be leading, the person sitting there was the true focus. The aura emanating from him suggested he might be an awakened individual.

Duke's heart sank for a moment.Who did I really eliminate? If it was just four hoodlums from the slums, it shouldn't warrant bringing someone of this caliber here, right?

"Dirk, calm down," Duane coughed lightly. Dirk sat back down, and the previously suppressed aura around him dissipated.

"Duke, you might not know, but we're actually here to protect you. Your act of bravery certainly deserves praise. However, among those four individuals, one of them has a complicated identity. Do you know Greg?"

Seeing Duke's puzzled expression, Duane shook his head and spoke mysteriously, "Greg is a well-known entrepreneur in J City. He operates several martial arts schools and entertainment businesses. And among the four people who died, one of them was his cousin. That day, he sent his cousin to collect a debt, and in no time, he received the tragic news. Sigh. Greg tends to act straightforwardly and may not be as easy to deal with as we are. So, if you know something, it's best to share it with us. Otherwise, I'm afraid Greg might personally come looking for you."

The Duke immediately found it somewhat absurd. Martial arts schools, entertainment venues – were those things that ordinary people could do? They must unquestionably be someone who had a mastery of both the light and dark sides, someone with extraordinary connections. No wonder a deputy director came directly to question him. That scar-faced fellow was undoubtedly a full-fledged ruffian, and getting entangled in such a relationship was definitely a stroke of bad luck for himself.

Observing Duane's concerned expression, Duke cursed inwardly. What a bunch of unsavory characters! An entrepreneur involved in martial arts schools and entertainment venues? Collecting debts was probably just a euphemism for using violence. If he were to reveal the truth, he would be in serious trouble!
