Chapter 85: Letting Him Down Easy

"Look, I'm sure you're a great guy. In fact, my sister Sophie couldn't stop talking about you last night. But can we be honest with each other for a moment?" I folded my arms on the table.

Prince Gregory's smile didn't waver as he nodded for me to continue. He cut off a piece of waffle and put it in his mouth.

"You and I both know that we" - I waved my hand between the two of us - "are just not compatible."

At that, he set his fork and knife on his plate and titled his head. I shifted uncomfortably under his scrutiny. I'd gone too far. Why couldn't I just keep my big mouth shut?

"How could we possibly know that when we've spent all of several minutes together?" he asked, his tone curious.

So many snarky retorts popped into my mind, but I bit every one of them back. I deserved a medal for my restraint. "I suppose you're right," I said around a heavy sigh. "You don't have any siblings, do you?"

"No." He picked up his fork and resumed eating. "Why do you ask?"
