Mr. Martinez

Toby slowly entered the bland classroom at 8:52 am. He walked over to his desk near the window. He put his head down on the desk instead of taking out a book.

Normally when Eva comes, either Toby would sit next to her or she would sit next to Toby. There are three rows of five seats in Toby's classroom. Eva sits in the third seat of the far left row near the wall and Toby sits in the second seat in the far left row next to the window.

At around 9:02 am, Eva came in along with the remaining students. Eva sat in her desk, but something strange happened. Their teacher was nowhere to be found. After five more minutes a person walked through the door. This person wasn't their grumpy, blonde, middle aged teacher, this person was a substitute. He had curly hair and tanned skin a bit darker than Eva's.

"Hello, I am Mr. Martinez. All I ask is that you do the work Ms. Green left behind, then after you can do whatever. Just don't be too loud."

After saying this, Mr. Martinez sat down at the teacher's desk which was in front of the desks, inline with the door, and in front of the blackboard.

After noticing Mr. Martinez's calm demeanor which was incredibly different from most imperious substitutes they had, the children asked if they could sit next to each other. Without much thought Mr. Martinez approved, and not long after all children formed groups. And of course, the two outcasts in the room, one by choice and the other not, sat next to each other.

Luckily, Toby finished the work beforehand so he had nothing to do while Eva had to figure out some problems calibrated in inches. Eva looked down at her work, then looked up again and came face-to-face with an eight-year-old carrying a knife. On top of all that, he was smiling.

After getting over her internal shock, Toby handed her the knife.

"How the hell did you get this. I thought you'd bring me a butter knife." Eva said sarcastically, but Toby kept his composure, although, he wasn't allowed to touch a butter knife.

"I snuck it out of my house, so you'll need to return it tomorrow so that my mom won't notice anything." Toby said looking at her pushing the knife down so that the others won't see it, and Eva nodded.

One of Eva's hidden talents that Toby would soon discover is that she could take any kaput item and turn it into something magical. But the thing is, Eva was clutching onto the knife as if she had ulterior motives.

After this they talked about ways to defray money for the parrot's food and for better medicine to nullify its wing.
