Chapter 34

“Do you know another way to get him off our backs?” Lou replied.

She sighed, shook her head, then stared out the passenger-side window, deep in thought. It wasn’t until they parked the car in the motel lot that she said, “There may be another option.”

“Such as?” Wayne asked.

“I have to figure it out.”

“And you’re not talking until you do.”

“No, Dad, I’m not.”

Lou glanced at Wayne, lifting an eyebrow. Wayne shrugged, and got out of the car. A few minutes later the three of them were in Lou and Wayne’s room, waiting for Matt to call to say he had a room as well. While they waited, Wayne set up the usual security he used when they were traveling—on his room and Rae’s, which was next door. Then he took an acoustic noise generator from his bag, setting it on the desk. With it turned on, it would be impossible for anyone to hear what they were saying, or to record them. “Not that anyone knows we’re here,” he said. “But I’m not taking chances.”
