“You never answered my question,” Matt said with a brief smile.

“I brought along two friends. They should be arriving any second now.” Lou knew they would, having overheard his saying so over the wire. He waved when he saw Wayne and Rae come into view, then introduced them as “My business partner, and our secretary,” when they sat across the table from him and Matt.

Matt lifted an eyebrow. “According to what I know about the three of you, Carlo, the pretty lady is more than your secretary. Presuming of course that your partner is who I think he is.”

“Which would be?” Wayne asked.

“The name on the door of your office suite was Bourke and Travis Protection Services. Our mutual friend…Hell, let’s go with names. Regotti got back to me with the results of the finger prints I lifted. One set belonged to Carlo. The other to one Walter Brooks, who had a daughter named Robin. She’s mulatto.”

“I prefer the term mixed race,” Rae told him. “I’m not a mule.”
