Hunters and prey

I kept reading the journal, every so often I would take a break and explore more. The Journal was a gold mine of information, it explained the strengths, weaknesses, and characteristics of supernatural creatures.

I even came across a page on vampires, who are a lot different in this world than my own. It was fascinating learning about all of this information.

What I can sum up about this new world is a simple fact, it is dangerous but, oh so exciting. Hunters travel the world to hunt down supernatural creatures and kill them, while the creatures do their best to avoid the hunters. The general populace doesn't even know about all of these creatures. Even demons are roaming about, stealing souls, making deals.

I can't wait to butcher one.

This place doesn't have any food and I'm starving, which won't kill me but I will just feel bad.

Sigh, I'm going to have to stick this out this place isn't around any wildlife, nor is it close to a town.

Whoever built it really wanted to be secluded, and protected by the looks of the symbols I can now sort of identify. They are commonly called devil traps, used to as the name suggests contain and hold devils.

Shutting the journal I began to look around for a bag, the bag I found was decently sized and completely empty. Next, I went to the bedroom and began to make more makeshift bags out of the sheets.

I couldn't stay here for long, I need to get out.

I want to hunt, and maybe I will find a way back home along the journey.

Using the makeshift bags I fashioned I began to fill the with the weapons and books held inside the underground base, I took only what looked important. Thankfully I can always come back if I have to. It could be a good place to lay low if I am in trouble.

I began to walk with all of my bags slung over my shoulder, my destination was the nearest town, of which I have no idea where it is, thankfully my sensory field is rather large and useful, and I am heading toward where the largest amount of energy is, following that trail should aid me.

I walked for several hours, I mostly passed farms and fields, this area is flat and barren, finally, I spotted a road.

I began to walk alongside the road, the sun was blaring.

I spotted a truck heading my way, I began to rapidly flag them down, hoping they would stop and help.

The truck slowly came to a halt next to me, and the window slowly rolled down revealing a young African American male.

Well everyone is young to me.

"Need a hand?" the man asked resting his elbow on the open window

"I would appreciate it, I seem to be lost," I answered with a grateful smile

"Where you heading?" he asked me squinting his eyes like he was appraising me

"The nearest town, I'm what you would call a free spirit," I replied smoothly

"Alright, get in kid," he told me while pointing to the bed of his truck

"You can throw your bags back there,"

"Thank you," I replied gratefully whilst throwing my things in the back and getting in

"Sure thing," he replied as he started driving the truck once more

As we drove the man went to turn on the radio, his arm hit a bottle of water of which the cap was off, the water spilled all over my left arm and lap.

"Oh I'm sorry didn't mean to, there are some napkins in the glove compartment," He said with an apologetic look

He wasn't, I could tell. It was as if he deliberately spilled it on me. Smiling I opened the glove compartment, there was a butter knife and some napkins, moving the butter knife I took the napkins and began to dry myself.

He isn't making the best impression on me.

Out of the corner of my eye, I saw his long stare when I moved the butter knife, it was like he was testing me.

"Ah! I forgot I'm Rufus," he said holding out one of his hands while the other steered the wheel

I took it and gave him a firm handshake, not too much pressure but not so little either, "Taban, it's a pleasure to meet you, Rufus," I replied a small smile etched onto my face

"So, a free spirit huh?" he said gesturing to the open lands, "not much out here how did you get stuck walking," he added

"I enjoy the exercise of walking, sadly I misjudged the distance between towns out here, what about you? You don't sound like you are from around here," I replied

"I'm not, I have some family from around here," he replied vaguely

We stayed in silence for a small moment before he broke it, "So Taban, you must be far from home,"

"Oh?" I prompted his continuation

"Your accent," he informed me

Accent? Maybe I should have latherd on a thick country accent. I can do many accents from around the world as a matter of fact.

"Oh, yeah I get that a lot, no I'm originally from Mongolia but, I moved out and decided to travel the world, I was too naive and lost track of my spending. The next thing I know, I'm broke. But, I still wanted to travel," I said with a 'whistful' tone

As we drove a diner appeared in our view.

"Care to join me for a bite to eat?" Rufus asked

I nodded and replied with a small 'embarrassed' chuckle, "hehe, only if you are paying,"

"Of course," he replied while pulling into the diner's parking area

We both got out, I again spotted him taking a long look this time at my seat.

As we were seated we began to pour over the menu. Silence finally reigned between us.

"Hello I'm Abigal and I will be your server this evening! What can I get you two to drink?" the server exclaimed in a bright cheery tone

"I will have a cup of coffee, black," Rufus ordered glancing at me

"I will have the same," I replied

Black coffee is good, but I still like my Sake.

She smiled, "alright two black coffees coming right up!"

"Thank you for this Rufus," I said with a grateful expression forming on my face

"Of course," he replied simply

Abigail was quick to return with our drinks, "here you go, now what will y'all be having to eat,"

Rufus looked at me, I smiled at Abigail and replied, "I will have the hashbrowns and eggs, sunny side up,"

"Make that two," Rufus added

She smiled once more before replying, "that will come out in a jiffy!"

We sat in a peaceful silence while we waited for our food. I saw Abigail returning with our food only ten minutes after ordering.

Placing the plates down she said, "here y'all go, would you like anything else?"

I shook my head, "no thank you,"

"Just a slice of blackberry pie for me, you sure you don't want anything it's on my dime," Rufus replied with a toothy smile

Shaking my head I replied, "no thanks, I am already having a free meal,"

He nodded while she went off to procure the slice of pie. I grabbed the salt shaker and put some over my meal, I caught Rufus looking at me intently whilst I did so.

Taking a bite I saw his shoulders relax, now I might not be a professional hunter, but I know when I just went through a lot of tests to see if I'm a creature, I was suspicious of the water, the knife was what sold me. From the books, I read silver can be a weakness of a plethora of creatures.

So whilst I'm not any sort of professional in hunting the creatures of this world.

Rufus certainly is.

We continued to eat in silence, on occasion we would talk but mostly we sat in silence.

Finally, the bill came Rufus paid and we left, we are only a few minutes' drive from town.

As we got back into his truck, Rufus looked at my bags, " that's a lot of baggage," he idly commented while he drove out of the diner's lot and continued on toward the town

"I'm a sentimental guy what can I say," I said with a shrug of my shoulders

"Plus, most of it is stuff for if I have to sleep outside," I added with a chuckle at the end

He laughed and replied, "smart, must get tiring carrying it everywhere though,"

"Eh, It's not so bad," I replied gesturing to my muscles, "that's what these are for,"

We got into town and pulled into a small what seems to be a motel lot, "want help with your bags?" he asked

"Nah I got it, take care Rufus, and thank you I won't forget your kindness," I replied getting out and shutting the door

I plucked my bags from his truck bed and began to walk toward the motel entrance, "see you around Taban!" he called after me while he drove off
