She shivered as she pulled the blankets up higher.
Night had fallen once more, the snow yet to let up, and the small fire in the tent did little to fight off the pervasive chill that soaked deep into her bones.
It was the kind of cold that made her ache.
The kind that made her think she'd never be rid of it, even if she warmed up, her bones would still be cold.
Her body shivered hard enough that it hurt.
She tried to close her eyes to sleep through it, to skip ahead to daylight and dream of warmer times.
But she couldn't imagine falling asleep in this cold.
Worst of all, a voice in the back of her mind warned her that falling asleep might have dangerous consequences in this cold.
But it didn't make sense!
There was a fire. Shelter. Even a blanket.
Why couldn't she just stay warm?
