39 Chapter Thirty-Nine

"This daughter greets imperial father and mother." She said with her best imitation of gracefulness.

After absorbing the memories from the novel, she had gotten much better at imitating their actions. If anyone saw her now, they would think she was actually a refined princess.

"Why are you acting so distant come closer." A loving voice drifted into Meng's ear causing goose bumps to break out across her body.  Hearing someone use a loving tone toward her made her want to cringe.

Before the transmigrated she used to always wonder how she would feel if her parents showed her care for once. But if it was like this... she'd rather not.

Despite the good will the empress was trying to display in her words, it didn't change the greed in her eyes. Meng's eyebrow lifted in dark amusement.

She walked closer to them with a bright, ignorant smile. She didn't understand their behavior; however, it was clear that they wanted something from her.

Considering she barely had anything to offer that would make them this happy, she was put on guard. The small number of things she did have to offer, she absolutely couldn't give up.

"Is this about ripping off the maid's arm?" Meng tried to act shyly while saying this, but it ended up looking extremely awkward. Even someone as shameless as her couldn't say 'she ripped off someone's arm' and still act like a child with a straight face.

"Maid? What maid? Don't worry about harming people like that. I've already heard all about how she dragged you around. It was completely within your rights to put her in her place."

"You aren't going to punish me then?"

"Of course not!" The emperor interrupted with a trembling beard. This daughter of his was far too useful how could he punish her?

Placing back on his pleasant smile, the emperor gave Meng a doting look. He eyes gleamed happily as he rubbed his chin. "On a more important note, how have you been lately?"

"Fine."

"You've been missing for five days, were you maybe with Feng Qi?"  Noticing that Meng wasn't going to say anymore the emperor spoke  up again.

'So, this is about Feng Qi then.' Didn't she already have enough problems with that person. The emperor bringing up the 'with Feng Qi' made it much worse for her.  That would suggest that the entire time she was missing so was Feng Qi... What exactly was he doing while she was sleeping?

"This daughter apologizes for her absence. I accidently got caught up in some studies in the royal library."

The emperor's eyes flashed with discontent after her response. Right when he announced the engagement, he had people watching over her from a distance. When Feng Qi stopped showing up around the palace, he had an investigation done right away.

It ended up that both Meng and Feng Qi were last seen entering that room! Meng might be a child, but Feng Qi on the other hand, might look like a child, but his brain was mature. For Feng Qi to sit inside of his room so long there was something going on.

He had patiently waited to see Meng again, yet now she denying everything? She was betraying him for someone who didn't even have parents anymore, how ridiculous!

His face turned ugly, and he said angrily, "I know you were with Feng Qi for five days don't you dare lie to me! Now tell me what exactly he was doing in his room!"

"Eh? Imperial father during those five days I was really in the library. I have no idea what you are talking about."

The emperor could no longer contain his annoyance, he slammed his fists on the side of his throne while standing up. "Hehe you've really raised a good daughter my empress!" With that he flicked his sleeve and walked out of the court room.
