Chapter 35 - Cal Mira Wave

Chapter 35 – Cal Mira Wave

Author's Note: None today!

Going underwater was really a good call. We were gaining almost as many levels here than we were on land!

Since I had long reached the activation event's bonus EXP, I needed another way to gain fast EXP here. This was the way.

We spent a few hours in the water using our diving gear that we purchased on Cal Mira, and then returned to the far island to rest and eat. This strategy got us tons of EXP, quickly leveling us up. I had reached the low 90s in terms of levels, with Eda, Welst and Rojeel reaching the low 70s, and Indigo and Rishia in the low 80s.

We were chilling on the island, tired after a long grinding session, when Captain Speedy suddenly turned up on the island shore.

"Bow Hero! We urgently need your help!"

"What's the issue?"

"The Earl needs you to defend the islands! A wave is incoming!"

What happened? This was really bad. I thought we wouldn't have a wave for another few weeks or so.

"In that case, we have no choice but to assist."

We rode in the boat and arrived back in the main town faster than we had departed it. This really was serious.

I quickly rushed to where the Earl was, and he was discussing strategy with Naofumi and the Arcian Expeditionary Forces.

"We don't have many sailors, and the crown can't send us much support. We should send somebody to the castle to request help."

I really wanted to send out Arcium's own navy, but the modernization wouldn't be complete anytime soon. This was really unfortunate. Also, most of my soldiers were cavalry, which meant they had no naval experience whatsoever.

"We should use exploding Ricolu fruit barrels." Rishia suggested. "They explode and kill monsters around them, but they are normally banned by fishing laws. It's desperate, so we must use them now."

The Earl agreed with her idea.

We decided to send Naofumi to the castle, as I needed to help organize a defense of the islands due to my superior tactical knowledge.

For this wave, I decided to use the Soul Eater Bow. It had good stats, and I wanted to test it out.

The Arcian soldiers were tasked with garrisoning the main island, while the adventurers, local troops and hopefully the troops that Naofumi would bring would fight on water.

After a while, Naofumi, the queen, and some troops arrived. They were mostly sailors, tasked with manning the ships.

00:00

Soon enough, the wave struck. Rifts appeared in the sky, and giant fish-like creatures streamed out of the cracks.

"Fueee…" Rishia groaned. I had instructed her not to do that, but she would still do it in times of trouble.

I shot my bow at the creatures, wiping out a great deal of them. Motoyasu threw his spear at them like a harpoon.

Damn. There were too many monsters. The bow wasn't too effective.

Seeing this, I transformed my bow into a catapult that I had copied while in Melromarc. I loaded a few barrels of Ricolu fruit onto it.

"Fire!"

The Ricolu fruit barrels fired in a wide spray, exploding as they hit the water. Hundreds of small creatures perished, floating to the surface. The sea was died in a tinted color due to the alcoholic tint of the fruits.

There's no way the wave would be this easy. Where was the boss?

"What was that?" A sailor shouted.

One of the warships cracked in half.

A giant sperm whale with a drill for a horn, probably around 150 meters long, had pummeled a Melromarc ship. Lucky I wasn't on that one.

Its name appeared on my menu.

Inter-dimensional whale.

"That can't be!" The other three heroes exclaimed.

"Dammit! Hundred Sword!"

Ren's sword shattered into hundreds of smaller swords that rained down on the smaller monsters in the ocean.

"Motoyasu!" I commanded. "Kamikaze the whale!"

"What?" He asked.

"Jump overboard and ram it!"

Motoyasu hesitated, but then quickly agreed.

"Ren and I will provide ranged support from the ship! Naofumi, defend the ship! The rest of you, use melee attacks!"

The queen commanded her soldiers to fire cannons at the whale.

"Raphtalia!" I ordered. "Fire ballistae at the ship!"

She paused for a second, but then obeyed.

"On it!"

Guns and bows in this world did not work with conventional physics. Their speed and power depended on the level and strength of the user, which is why modernizing the Arcian military was so tricky. I had to calculate which weapons would work best, and I couldn't immediately introduce a bunch of more advanced equipment as a result of this caveat.

Cannon balls and ballista shots rained upon the whale, causing complete chaos.

I sighed. These cannons took forever to reload and generally sucked. I was glad that the Arcian fleet would be so much better than its counterparts upon completion,

Naofumi leapt from the ship and positioned himself beneath its hull. As the whale began pushing the ship upwards, Naofumi grabbed its horn. The beast, trying to set itself free, shook its head viciously,

"Naofumi!" Raphtalia cried.

Naofumi drew the whale into the water, trying to distract it and giving us better opportunities to hit it.

"Motoyasu! Kamikaze, now! Raphtalia! Naofumi's not dead! Ballista him!"

"On it! Shooting Star Spear! Lightning Spear!

Naofumi, barely dodging these attacks, swam back to the ship amidst the bombardment and was lifted back up by Indigo.

A red-haired man and a beautiful blue-haired woman attacked the whale as well, splitting it in half.

"Spiral strike!"

"Shining stone! Thunder rain!"

"Thunder rain flying circle!"

With a last furious roar, the whale sank into the water. It was truly dead.

"Now, we should depart for the rifts." I advised Mirellia.

I heard a loud grunt. The red-haired man with the scythe who had landed the final hit on the whale was trying to kill Naofumi!

"Everybody!" I commanded. "Restrain this man!"

"Sorry, kiddo. For the sake of the world, we must kill you." The man, introducing himself as L'Arc, coolly said.

"All-encompassing power of the jewel, hear my plea and show yourself. My name is Therese Alexanderite. I am your friend. Lend me the power to destroy them!"

"The only jewels you're gonna get is a kick to the jewels!" Indigo quipped.

"Ceremonial magic judgment!" Mirellia shouted.

"Shooting Star Bow!" I screamed at the top of my lungs.

After firing off that attack, I launched a follow-up shot.

"Eagle Piercing Shot!"

The power from my shots dislodged Therese from where she was standing, nearly launching her off the edge of the ship. She was coughing up a large quantity of blood.

"Therese! Are you okay!" L'Arc worriedly asked.

"I'm fine. It's just a scratch."

"Why do you want to kill us?" I asked L'Arc. I was truly confused about his intentions.

"Long story short, we come from another world, and we have to kill Naofumi to save our world. I don't want to kill other people or get anyone else involved, so please stay out of the fight."

"Everyone!" I called out. "Battle Plan Six!"

I mounted Indigo, which used Zweite Tornado to launch himself directly upwards into the air.

"Watch out!" Therese shouted.

"Mirage Arrow!"

A bunch of arrows shot at L'Arc, who dodged them.

Unlucky for him, those were just illusions.

Rishia launched a barrage of throwing knives upon L'Arc, who yet again dodged them. He was bracing himself for my upcoming attack.

"Arrow Rain!"

A hail of arrows emerged from my bow, completely covering the distance between myself and L'Arc.

The man blocked many of them, but a few arrows scratched his chiseled face.

"Huh?"

L'Arc fell through the deck of the ship, which was orchestrated by Rojeel, Eda and Welst via a spell.

Therese tried to catch L'Arc, but she was tangled up by Naofumi in his party. She screamed L'Arc's name, but he didn't have time to respond.

Him still falling through the air, I shot possibly the most powerful arrow I'd ever unleashed.

"Eagle!"

"Piercing!"

"Shot!"

The queen, knowing what to do, formed an icicle prison below L'Arc. He would be impaled once he landed.

Indigo unleashed another Zweite Tornado, accelerating the speed of the arrow, propelling ourselves upwards as to avoid the icicle prison, and speeding up L'Arc's collision with the icicles.

L'Arc was hit by both the Zweite Tornado, the accelerated Eagle Piercing Shot, and the sharp tips of the icicles, all at once. The man's armor was pierced, causing his back to bleed buckets. He was alive, but just barely.

I backflipped off of Indigo, hi-fiving him to celebrate our victory. Nearby, Naofumi and his party had taken care of Therese, the latter panting and sweating in the corner, barely holding on to her consciousness.

"Do I have to do everything myself?"

Huh?

The same beautiful Japanese looking girl that appeared after I defeated that Soul Eater was standing before me. Her long black hair was fluttering in the wind, and she held an East Asian style fan.

It was who Indigo told me about after that wave.

It was the woman named Glass.
