The Letter M (5)

I'd never been so scared of exiting a room in my entire life.

"Go!"

Jason and I took off at impressive speeds, sticking to the far end of the room and cringing under the grating sounds of the gunfight happening in the background. Those thirty seconds that it took us to exit the room were the longest seconds of my life, every step feeling like slow motion, like I was wading through peanut butter.

I ducked with a screech on my lips under the barely missed assault of a stray bullet and nearly keeled over like an elephant from pure panic. Jason pulls me along with him, both of us giving it our all for the final stretch out of the room and then we're free. Claudette pulls us out the rest of the way and two people on either side of the doorway push the wooden panels shut.

I could breathe for the first time in the entire night. More tears welled up in my eyes, tears of relief and I felt like such a crybaby but I really couldn't help it.
