My Life

My life isn't worth mentioning. It could be said I have acquired bad luck enough to last through a few centuries of life if I could live or be reborn as a pathetic one with bad luck.

In my previous life, I died while eating a burger. Yes, I choked on it. If anyone hears it, they will laugh at how pathetic I am. I was born poor in that life and only went to school because of compulsory education, and the job I got wasn't worth that much.

The salary isn't enough to support a home and food for the month. I lived my life in hell for years before someone from an organization that helps the poor saw me and gave me some money so that I could support myself financially for some time. The first thing I did was to buy food to eat, as I never had enough money to satisfy my stomach.

I thought that my bad luck had ended and how wrong was I. I died that day while eating the food I bought with the money.

It was supposed to end with my death, but it didn't.

I found myself confined in a deep dark place, and I couldn't move. It lasted for a while, and finally, I found my way out of the dark place, only to see that I was reborn. I got a new life, so I hoped that this life would be different.

It indeed was in the beginning. My father was a warrior who earned money, though not much to support a luxurious life but enough for a family of four to live without much burden. Yes, my family consisted of my parents, my younger sister, and myself.

When I was a child, life was better than before. At that time, I concluded that I was reincarnated centuries after my death. The Earth I knew is no more, and it became somewhat that of a magical land.

I wished to become someone like a mage, so I could live in luxury with my family. My bad luck didn't allow me any more hope for me to sustain myself.

My father died in one of the missions for the Alliance. The compensation we got isn't that much, merely enough for five years of food and rent. This allowed me to complete school and reach the age of fifteen when we were checked for the mutation.

The mutation is said to happen at birth for some, but it appears around fifteen years of age for most humans. So the Alliance checks the children who crossed fifteen; if they are lucky to have the genes, then they are sent to the Magus Academy located near the cities.

Once graduated, there is a compulsory service as the Academy offers resources for the students free of charge. The only way to exclude is to pay a hefty price, the price of everything they spent on. The rich buy out their way from the compulsory service, but the poor have no way out but to accept their fate.

---

Today is the day that determines my fate. I would be happy if I could be any mutation. With the shitty luck I have, my hopes are down.

Indeed there are many classifications of the mutations. These are called ranks, and the rank determines how powerful a Mage is. Increasing in order, the rank classification goes in the order from F, E, D, C, B, A, and S.

The higher the rank is, the more powerful a mage is. Any mage can reach the S rank even if the person has F rank power, but it indeed needs a lot of time and resources.

The higher the rank is, the easier it is to reach the peak rank. Each rank has four levels, low-level, mid-level, high-level, and peak-level. The ones at Peak-level of S-Rank are formidable and are considered legendary existences.

Every student in the class is deep in discussion about whether or not they have the mutation or what the mutation could be.

Three elders entered the class, and the entire class stopped talking, and some forgot to breathe in anticipation.

One of the elders spoke, "Children, I don't think I have to need to explain why we are here. Next is your class turn, and everyone follow me in a queue. If you don't, we'll throw you out and you have to wait for another chance for a year."

The students nodded in unison and started to follow the elder to the ground in the center of the school. The elder turned around and stopped us and said, "Here, you'll be given a token number and once you got it, go wait near the raised platform. When your number is called, go the stage."

Everyone got their number and waited by the platform. There are indeed a lot of students waiting before us, and the process was held since morning. The elder got us here when it was twelve in the noon, and three hours has passed by.

"Next, Token No. 127… Alice Rogers."

Hearing that, I got alert. Next would be me.

The way they check is to take a sample of blood and small skin tissue and check for the mutations. It would take two to three minutes for each.

"B-Rank Mage, mid-level. Congratulations, Alice, you are officially a Mage Novice," one of the elders announced. Everyone was stupefied when they heard this. There was never a naturally mutated B-Rank Mage born from Glaren city, especially from this school which only produced F-Rank Mages in all its years.

Everyone started to congratulate. Some are filled with envy and jealousy, while some are filled with admiration.

"Next, Token No. 128…Oliver Crowley," the elder called my name. I stood up and went to the platform. I placed my hand inside a machine, and it collected my blood and small tissue samples.

After two minutes, it displayed my results, 'F-Rank Warrior, low-level.'

As I thought, I'm not a Mage and even a worst warrior. When my results were announced, everyone laughed at me. Some even sneered in disgust. They have a right to be disgusted at me; the lowest our school ever produced is a D-Rank Warrior; even at a low rank, he was at peak level.

Mages are rare, but everyone trains to become a warrior. While Mages usually watch the cracks, warriors protect the habitats and watch the surroundings.

Even though they are below Mages, they don't slack off as there was a chance to become a Mage.

Indeed a warrior can get a chance by earning enough Warrior Points. If one has highest points and reputation, they get a chance to get the Magic Gene Serum, which will mutate the human body and turn them into a Mage.

An F-Rank Warrior, not a chance in this life. I can only now depend on others to survive the cruel world.

While I was wallowing in my sorrow, a mechanical voice rang in my mind.
