Search begins

The baroness ordered the guard station to immediately try to find the culprit who is experimenting with monsters. The entire details are provided to the chief of guards regarding the incident. They even questioned Ash on certain details and Ash cooperated with the questioning.

Even spies of the knight division in the barony were sent out to find the culprit. Ash felt something bad about this situation. He decided to search the town by himself.

When he is about to go out in disguise from his house "Hey aren't you missing to take someone?" came a voice. When he looked at the source of the voice he saw Quinn and Rose with hoodies.

"What are you two doing here?"

"Well the situation isn't right and I know you are going to make your own move. So we decided that we will help you" said Quinn.

"You know that if anything happens to you guys I will be eaten alive by your grandmother" replied Ash.

"Well you would have to deal with that yourself" said Rose innocently.

Ash nodded his head with defeat and just said "Come".

They put on their hoodies and followed him. "So where is the first destination?" asked Quinn.

"We need to go to the alchemist of the town. Based on the results of his examination we will decide the direction of our investigation" said Ash.

"Okay lead the way" said Quinn. They went to the east side of the barony where there are blacksmiths, alchemists and rune smiths.

They went to "Dragon vein Alchemists" where the chemical is being examined. As soon as they entered the store the person at the desk said "Welcome what can we do for you?"

Ash looked at Quinn and nodded. Both Quinn and Rose removed their hoodies. When the person saw Quinn and Rose he bowed and said 'My lord what can I do for you?"

"I need to know the results of the chemical investigation my grandmother has sent" said Quinn.

"My Lord but it is confidential information and it can only be presented directly to head of the house" said the person.

"What is your name?" asked Rose. "My lady my name is Max" replied the person.

"Mr. Max we are investigating the case because it is urgent and guards need all the help they can get at this time. So please we will just take a look and go away" said Rose.

Ash saw the conflicted look in his face and put a 50000 gold coins bag in front of him. The entire money which he got from treasury is in the inventory.

"Take this for your service. We will not talk about this anywhere. As soon as we see the results of the examination we will leave" said Ash.

"Who might this gentleman be?" asked Max.

"He is our bodyguard" lied Quinn.

Max sighed and went inside to bring the paper of the examination.

Only after 2 minutes he returned with the paper. All 3 of them gave a look at the details. That chemical is a mixture of some plant extracts like "Black Lilly, Helm flower and Falcon fruit along with some of the hormonal chemicals obtained from different monsters like Swirrel, Caleosaurus and Zendas".

Black Lilly, Helm flower and Falcon fruit are some of the plants which induce pheromones and mixing these with hormones of those monsters have created this chemical.

"Someone is definitely mad for creating something from those plants and monster hormones" said Quinn gritting his teeth.

"That's for sure but the most important thing here is how is he getting supplied with these things because the monsters like Swirrels, Caleosauraus and Zendas are not the species which exists in the northern forest in the barony. They are most prevalent in territories of Dukes" said Ash.

"Only Black Lilly and Falcon fruit grows in the northern forests of our barony. While Helm flower grows in my father's only territory" said Ash with a grim look.

"There must be some higher power supporting our suspect. Otherwise it is not easy to get illegal products like Helm flower and other hormonal chemicals" said Quinn.

"Quinn only by cutting his supply we would be able to find out our culprit" said Ash. Both Quinn and Rose nodded in agreement. He gave away the paper back to max and about to go out when Max said "There is something else. I think our culprit may not be in the city".

All of them were startled and looked at Ash. "What do you mean by that?"

"The products we alchemists get are scanned at the entrance of the gates of the barony using a runic scanner for any suspicious chemicals so it is not possible to bring them inside" replied Max.

"Yes but there are devices which can block the runes from scanning right" said Rose. "Yes but those runic devices are made so powerful that not even these small magic blockers can stop them" said Max.

"I see then the culprit might be performing the experiments outside the forest" said Quinn. "Maybe but how did he bring the chemical inside the barony to experiment on those leeches?" asked Ash.

This put everyone in deep thought. Ash closed his eye and thought for a bit and tried to find out the reason behind these events.

He kept thinking and after sometime came in his head. "Oh god! this is insane" said Ash. Both Quinn and Ash looked at each other and asked "What is it?"

"He has been smuggling the chemicals inside through dead bodies" said Ash. Both Quinn and Rose were shocked. Even Max was perplexed on hearing his words.

"What?" shouted both Quinn and Rose. Ash held his fingers on right side of his forehead and massaging it.

"When I went to slay the Leeches inside the sewers I saw the skeletons and bones piled up on far end of each side. I thought it was of previous adventurers but the way the bones are piled up indicate that those bodies are not of adventurers but they were dead bodies of different people of the barony who were travelling to the barony or away from the barony" said Ash.

This revelation hit both Quinn and Rose very hard. "Normally only supplies will be checked at the entrance of the gates but not dead bodies. There is someone helping him from inside the barony to bring the corpses inside the gates" said Ash.

"What a sick man" said Quinn with a disgusted face. "Quinn and Rose, you both need to inform the guards Donovan. I will go and check the infirmary" said Ash.

They both nodded and went to inform the guards. Quinn made his way to the infirmary in the western district. He showed a fake id of being with knights and went inside.

The doctor who is a middle aged man is observing the patients. "Hello my name is Mark and I am one of the guards in charge of mutation investigation. So I hope you cooperate" said Ash changing his voice.

The doctor said "Okay". There is an assistant with him who is a youth. "Have you received any new corpses recently?"

"Yes we did receive them and we have put them in the morgue. The strange thing is over the past few months those corpses are disappearing and we even filed a complaint at the guard station" said the doctor.

"So did they find anything?" asked Ash. "Well they did try to catch the culprit by guarding the infirmary at nights but it was of no use" said the doctor.

"The guard who was on watch said that he did not see anyone suspicious going in and out of the infirmary" said the doctor.

"System perform a scan on the entire building of the infirmary" said Ash.

"Host there is a secret door in the right room where all the medicines are being kept" said the system.

Ash understood and when he saw the eyes of the doctor's assistant it is filled with worry. Ash immediately averted his gaze to not alert the assistant.

"Thank you for your time" said Ash and went away. He understood that the doctor's assistant is the inside helper of that person.

He made his way to the guard station and saw Quinn and Rose standing there. He approached them and said "Let's get out of here and I'll explain everything I found out at your home.

They all made their way to baroness's mansion and went to Quinn's room. "So what did you find out?" asked Quinn.

"There is a secret door leading underground in the infirmary. The corpses are missing during last few months and reports have been filed. The guards could not catch the person because that person is an insider of the infirmary" said Ash.

"How did you find out about the secret door?" asked Rose with curiosity. "I sneaked back into the infirmary through a window and stumbled up on it. Before they could find out I escaped away" lied Ash.

"So who is the insider?" asked Rose with urgency. "The doctor's assistant" replied Ash.

"Why didn't you alert the guards if you know it?" asked Quinn. "Without any evidence we can't do anything. So let us lay a trap for him with the help of our knight captain Morgan" said Ash and explained the plan.
