"Maxson, does anyone have a cigarette? It would surely help me calm down."
"Here, take the whole pack. I know that's it's hard to kill another human, but you will have to get used to it if we are to survive in this world."
"I know, and it isn't my first kill either, it's just the thought of taking another human life that still haunts me."
"I can't say much about killing humans, but think about the fact that they may have done that to your loved ones. It will help you."
"Thanks, Maxson."
"No problem, sir!"
After he gave me that advice and the pack of cigarettes, Maxson turned around and entered the building where the rest of my team was searching for anything can be used by us.
Now that I was left alone, I took one cigarette from the pack and light it up while still thinking about what will happen in the future. The most dangerous thing in this world isn't the zombies, and while some may argue, I know that humans are the worst enemy of themselves.
One hour later, Maxson and all of the men in my team come back to the vans while some of them caring guns, crates of bullets, or machetes. Quite a good haul I may say. While we may not be able to use all of them, the weapons can still be useful for other things like stripping them of arts and replacing the good parts with weapons that we can use.
With the new weapons in the vans, we decided to clear the road and quickly leave this place in case more cultists will appear from god knows where.
Our trip to the clinic wasn't that boring as after two hours of driving from that cultist place, we meet another group of survivors, who tried to get themselves in Mexico, and I have to say that they are really brave for doing that. If before the end of the world it will take you roughly 24 hours to arrive in Mexico, leaving from Atlanta, now it will take you at least thrice as long or even longer. And if you take in the equation the dangers you may meet along the way, it will make the trip very dangerous and most likely bloody.
When they saw us, the people from that group become rather cautious while some were scared. Deciding that a direct contact with them will surely scare them even more and most likely become a fight.
Getting out of the car, I raised my hands in the air while I told them that we aren't here to fight them. At first, they didn't believe me, but after a couple of minutes of speaking with them from afar, they finally realize that we weren't a threat to them.
Seeing that my team wasn't a threat, their leader slowly approaches me while his group watched from afar. The man was rather tall for a Latin man and locked like he had a subscription to a gym before the apocalypse to hit us.
"Carlos Alcon, that's my name."
"Eric Jarl, nice to meet you, Carlos."
"I can't really say that. As you may have already seen, I have a family to protect and you guys driving close to us made us cautious of you."
"Fair enough, if an unknown group would arrive close enough to my people, I will do the same. Heck, I would even order a mass mobilization."
"Now that we have the same thoughts, can you tell me what do you guys want with us?"
"Sincerely? I was curious about you guys, I heard from your messenger that you guys want to head to Mexico, but why would you do that? Before this shit to happen it would have taken you at least a day to drive from here to Mexico."
"That's true, but as you know, there are many places in Mexico that can keep us safe while here there are many places that can kill us, or lose limbs as you did."
"I see, then I really hope you guys can arrive there, I will take my team and go around your camp then. Once again, it was nice meeting a normal person that didn't try to eat us."
After our little conversation, we left them alone as I didn't want a conflict that can be avoided from the start.
Another thing that happened to us before we could arrive at the clinic was us meeting a horde right when we took a turn and it wasn't a pretty sight as the horde start chasing after us as soon as they saw us.
Luckily for us, there was a bridge that we could use to clear the horde or at least escape from them.
Arriving at the bridge, we quickly took our positions behind the cars on the road, and when the horde was insight and close enough for us to shot without caring that much about accuracy be opened fire upon them.
The first ten minutes were rather calm, but when we passed the fifteen minutes mark, our ammo was already exhausted and I didn't let them use the emergency mags in case we may meet with other humans that may attack us.
Seeing that we can't do anything other than retreating, we left with our vans and took a detour that made us drive an extra four hours.
By the time we arrived near the clinic, the sun was long gone and the only natural light was the moon that shines brightly in the darkness of the forest.
While we could check the place now, I decided against that as we won't know what can live there and it was better to check the place in the morning as we could at least see our surroundings, which led to me taking the first-night watch once again.
Creation is hard, cheer me up!
