<Unknown POV>
"I presume you finished your mission, corporal!"
"Of course, sir. We meet with Subject 69, Eric Jarl. His body has successfully integrated with the serum that we injected him with serum when he was in a coma/ unconscious. Our man in his base has already been killed in a scavenging run, leaving no trace to our mission, sir."
"Good, he seems to be the only subject that got the buffs from the serum. The rest of the subjects died and become abominations. You are free to do what you want Corporal Carlos Alcon. "
"Thank you, sir."
When Carlos left him alone, the man that got the report from Carlos turned to look at the desk in the room. From the desk he picked the recorder:
"This is the least I can do for you son. Even if you won't meet me, I will let you know someday in the future that your dad is sorry for leaving you and your mother to suffer by yourselves. At least now you will be able to survive this shit whole my superiors created for their greed. The cold war led to our government launching the virus against our enemy. Unfortunately, they didn't take the civilians' safety as a priority. The only thing that matter was to see the enemy die. Well, from that little mistake, the whole world had become the battlefield for the final war between humans. After years of serving as a scientist for the army, I got to the conclusion that young men and women go to war. Sometimes there are forces while sometimes they do it for fame or for their loved ones, but not even one time a soldier that comes back from the war will be the same. The war is a horror story that will haunt you for the rest of your life. Remember this thing son, if one day, you will find a girl that you want to protect and marry her even in this new world, you will have to protect her as she will be one of the things that will keep you sane.
When you prayed to the Norse gods like your mother done, I had one of my men inject you with a serum when you were unconscious, I know that what I did was dangerous and I could have killed you, but the things that you will achieve with the serum was good enough for me to risk it. Once again, I'm sorry for leaving you and I'm sorry for what you will suffer in the future. I don't have much to live as one of the test subjects for the cure but listen to me son: There won't be a cure, this virus won't be cured and no one will get the serum now that I know that I succeeded. Goodbye son and I hope that you will forgive me for what I have done."
With the message for his son in his hand, the man called one soldier to send this letter to his son.
"Sir!"
"At ease soldier. Do you have a family, kid?"
"Just a brother, sir. But why are you asking me that, sir?"
"If I could give you a way out of this shit hole, would you take your brother with you and leave?"
"Sir, what should I do for that chance?"
"See this recorder? On this, I recorded something for my son. I want you and your brother to give it to him and maybe you will be able to settle down there."
"Your son, sir? He ain't working for the army right?"
"No, he was just a normal teenager till the virus was released and the situation forced him to become a leader and warrior. Just from a small group of four he saved people and gave them hope for a better tomorrow and now his small community managed to settle down in one of the places where the firefighters stayed in the summer waiting for a fire to appear in the forest."
"Sir, I will accept this mission, it was an honor knowing you sir!"
"Once again, at ease. Tell me your name, kid, and how old are you."
"My name is Alexander Pierce, sir! As for my age, I'm nineteen, sir."
"Alexander Pierce, as your superior, I order you to leave this facility in the next ten hours if you want to complete your mission and survive. Good luck kid."
"Sir, yes, sir!"
<Eric POV>
When the first rays of light hit my face, I woke up. Fortunately for us, no one attacked us last night which gave us a good sleep for the night.
Seeing that it was probably quite early in the morning, I look around our makeshift camp. The guys were sleeping while the one that was guarding the camp was looking at something in the distance through his scope.
"What are you looking at soldier?"
"Morning, boss. I found something interesting on the main road. It's a man on a motorcycle; he's chased by some dudes that are also on bikes. What should we do?"
"Well, what do you think would be a logical thing we should do?"
"If you want my honest answer, sir, I would save him and take the bikes from his enemies, but as I ain't the leader of this group. In the end, you are the one that will give us the order to save him or let him get caught."
"You will be a good team leader. Wake up the rest of the guys, we are going to get ourselves some bikes."
Creation is hard, cheer me up!
