Chapter forty six

(Cassandra's POV)

I make a smacking sound with my lips as I swallow the last piece of lemon cake. Matthew chuckles at my antics with a shake of his head.

"Thanks for the meal, Matthew. It was delicious," I say with a big smile. I look around and sigh, we'll have to leave soon so I want to take this in as much as I can. Hopefully we'll come here again some other time.

"It's not a problem, I'll tell the Cook you said so. Let's pack up. It's already getting late," he says and starts to put all the used plates and empty containers into the picnic basket.

Is it getting late? The sun is still high up in the sky. I shrug it off as a precaution to avoid my mother's wrath.

I help with the cooler and fold down the umbrella.

Matthew comes to collect them from me but I move out of reach. "I want to help."

"Fine but give me the umbrella, you can hold the cooler," he says in a tone that said this wasn't up for discussion.
