IMOGEN'S POV

The scorching kiss ended as abruptly as it began. Elijah wrenched himself away, leaving me gasping and unsteady against the door. My fingers traced my tingling lips as I watched him stumble to his desk, gripping the edge with white knuckles.

"Why did you do that?" I managed to croak out, my voice barely above a whisper.

He turned, his stormy eyes meeting mine. "I only did what you wanted me to do." His fingers fumbled with his tie, yanking it loose.

"I didn't ask for that," I protested weakly, my heart still racing.

Elijah swallowed hard, his gaze darting away. "Don't worry. It won't happen again." His voice was cold, detached. "You should leave."

A scoff escaped my lips as I reached for the doorknob, my legs still unsteady. The hallway stretched before me, a path to my old sanctuary. With each step, a smile tugged at the corners of my mouth, growing wider as I approached the familiar door.
