It had been two days since the hospital scene happened, I managed to save only eleven people with my adventure. four women, five men, and two children a boy and girl were the people who joined me. Honestly, I didn't plan to save so few but people not believing me caused a lot of those idiots to die. We all live in my large home thankfully it has at least 8 rooms, not including the lab. I set up the lab to be a storage room that could work as a medical ward since it had medical beds already.
Thankfully I managed to set up the back lab area as the food storage and weapon storage areas. These areas are locked by thumbprint locks that only I had access. I did this cause of the fear of people betraying me. Having lived this chaos before I know how quickly people turn against each other.
I am was currently cleaning my handgun when someone came knocking on my father's office door. I turned this into my personal room thanks to the locks on the door. I know to normal people this seems like a bit paranoid.... but hell your not normal. Your a voice or idea.... in my head.
I opened the door to the Nurse from before, her name is Amelia but I call her Amy. She looked like she was out of breath from having rushed over.
"The street you...people....biters...." she said between gasps of air.
I put my hand on her shoulder giving a soft look before putting a finger on her lips. "Breath first but I know what you are talking about."
What she was talking about is what we later will call the death parade. As people run away towards the military outposts designed to filter out the infected. The horde of biters will be right on their tail taking down the slower ones. before long it turns into a swarm of running people followed by a shuffling horde of undead. This memory will etch into the minds of many this is why it was called the death parade.
I rushed outside as quickly as I could having Amy follow behind. Once outside I told her to take the children inside as I rushed over to the hunter blinds I turned into scout towers near the gate. I yanked open the door placing my hand on the rifle scope blocking the guy's shot. I covered his mouth with the other hand whispering into his hear.
"Listen to me closely, we have a home, protection, and food right now. If you shoot and try and save those people you will be leading not only them but the horde right to our gate. As long as we remain silent the horde will pass and we won't have to worry about them trying to storm the gate." I told him before he nodded.
I released his mouth before signaling across to the other side to stand down. It was silent inside the hunter blind but it was not at all quite outside. The sounds of screaming people as they ran for their lives. You could hear the groans of the biters as they slowly edged along the road. One was tackled just outside the front gate as the person had attempted to rush here for safety. We could hear that puke-inducing sound over the flesh squishing blood as it was torn from the person. The screams seemed to echo through the blind making it almost impossible to ignore.
I could see the man named Seth's face turning pale as he was trying to keep from puking. I gently motioned for him to go back to the house. I looked across at the other blind and did the same. a short moment after the two were making their way back towards the house. I remained to watch through the scope of the rifle. Something about seeing the death parade made me think the nightmares would begin again. This time though, I am not the same man I was the first time I saw this before.
It was when I saw a mother and child running along the side of the road from biters did my heart twist in my chest. They were headed right for us with five or six biters behind them. My finger shivered as I readied my shot but it was a moment of clarity. My gun wasn't aimed at the biter but the woman. It was that moment did I realize that my part that gave up my humanity before still remained. The part that brought you into this so that I would not lose my sanity.
I slowly lifted the walkie lowering it as much as possible before speaking through. "Seth... I am going to do something stupid. I need you and Mick to be ready to lock the gate when i leave and when I get back."
I heard two clicks meaning they understood the orders. Once I had that I slowly slid down the ladder of the blind and headed towards the gate. I saw the guys come running up that i gave them a slight wave. Once they were on either side of the gate I slowly drew my small axe from my hip. Once the opening was big enough to squeeze through I rushed out the gate. I could see the lady was now carrying her child as she ran towards me at full speed.
I spun the axe in my hand before rushing at her as fast as my feet could. As I got closer I saw her getting ready to scream. That was til I motioned her to sssh before passing her. My axe swung clean through the air catching the biter right at the base of its neck. It's head flew off to the side as my axe collided with another biter's forehead. Its's head split open causing the axe to fall to the side giving me no chace to quickly catch the damn weapon. I shifted my weight onto my foot pivots moving so I got behind the last biter. My hand grabbed the biter's chin before my other hand rested on its head.
In one quick moment the head was turned back facing me before falling down dead. I grabbed the woman's hand leading her back towards the gate trying my best not to wake the baby. As we got through the gate the other two quickly shut it with as minimal sound as possible. The woman was breathing heavy as she was nearly out of breath. I noticed the child was being smothered against her shoulder to keep from crying. I had seth quickly lead the lady inside before the child ran out of air.
The night continued on like this on into the next day when someone came up to me.
"Thank you for saving me and my son. if it wasn't for you I fear we would have ended up like my husband. Everyone here says your the leader and to talk to you about what I can do for work?" she said before grabbing the rifle out of my hand and shoving a plate of food in its place.
I took a moment to think about what she said. They considered me their leader? All I did was set up a shelter and tell everyone how to survive a flood of the dead.
