Adeline did not expect that he would give the cheque to her. She had always thought that he viewed her as a burden.

Stunned, Jonathan glanced at Ruby unhappily and asked, "Who asked you to come in?"

"You are giving her our money. If I didn't come in, we'll have nothing left for us!"

Sylvia followed her in with a disappointed look on her face. "Jonathan, didn't you say that we don't have any money at home?"

Jonathan was displeased. "What are you two doing here? Adeline's mother left the money for her. It's not your money."

Adeline looked at the cheque in a daze. Just as Ruby was about to grab it, she pulled it away.
