Chapter 9: Experimental laboratory

[Axel POV]

Leaving the conference room with Regina by my side, we proceed to make our way to the elevator vestibule. When we arrive there, we both position ourselves where we can have a clear view of the area in case any of those raptors show up.

The silence between us doesn't last long, as I'm the first to speak, mostly to try and establish a friendly rapport with her.

"By the way, I'm Axel, a dinosaur extermination expert." Upon hearing my comment, Regina turns to look at me and responds in a sarcastic tone, "I'm Regina, and it seems like these pests are a bit too much for you alone. Is there a job opening for an assistant?"

I know from her bio that she tends to insert jokes in serious situations; despite her serious and cold demeanor, she's kind-hearted and cares about people she gets to know.

"Of course, but you'll need to give me your resume." She chuckle at my response and see her eyes directed at my dear Casull. "Do you like it? It's a customized model I made. It has 13mm explosive rounds, which is why it's so lethal."

"Oh, really? In that case, if we make it out alive, I'll ask you to make me a customized weapon." Chuckling at her comment, I nod at her.

Putting on a serious face and with a curious tone, she asks, "So, why are there dinosaurs in the facility?"

This time, leaning against the wall, I cross my arms and speak with an exasperated voice, "It's a consequence of the third energy experiment that the crazy Kirk conducted." Nodding at my response, she gets lost in her thoughts, looking at her serious and contemplative face, I decide not to interrupt her inner thoughts.

After a few minutes, the power is restored. Turning to look at her, I comment, "Let's go; it's time to move." Snapping out of her thoughts, she nods, and we proceed to the elevators.

Taking out my ID card, I insert it, and in a matter of seconds, the elevator opens.

When we reach the B1 floor vestibule, the elevator opens, and at that precise moment, the elevator's emergency exit opens, and a velociraptor leaps at us. It manages to knock me down and starts biting my left arm. "You darn bastard!" I exclaim in pain.

Assessing the situation I was in, Regina quickly aims and fires.

Bang!

With an impressive aim, she manages to hit the velociraptor in the eye, making it release me and retreat a few meters. I quickly get up and, despite the pain, aim and fire at it.

Bang! Bang!

Succeeding in killing the velociraptor. As i sighs with relief, she quickly approaches me. "Are you injured?" I can hear a hint of concern in her voice.

Nodding, I tell her, "I'm fine; the special lycra I'm wearing prevented it from piercing my skin. By the way, nice shot."

Breathing a sigh of relief, she makes a sarcastic comment, "You have a lot of useful items on you; I hope you'll give me a full package when we get out of here."

"Plus, I told you, you need an assistant; luckily for you, I was looking for a job." This time, I couldn't help but laugh a little. Her way of making jokes in serious situations has its charm, to a certain extent.

"All right, I'll give you a 30% discount for the full package, all for being a good assistant." With a slight smile, she nods her head. "I hope you give me a job efficiency bonus." I shake my head at her jokes.

Turning serious and leaving the jokes behind, we continue on our way, passing by the mass of raptors I killed an hour ago.

We reach the computer room without further incidents. We quickly move to the large screen that will give us access to the experimental lab. Taking out one of the keys, I hand it to Regina. "Take this; position yourself on the left side, and we'll slide the cards simultaneously."

"Very well, on the count of three: one...two...three!" Sliding the cards, the screen descends, showing us the door to the experimental lab. Approaching it, I notice that we need a DDK E disk to open it.

Seeing the disk requirement, Regina speaks with a bored tone, "Oh, great, just what we needed. I'll call my team to see if they can find it."

"No need; I have it with me." Looking at her bored face, I give her a small smile and, approaching, I insert the DDK disk. Without needing to check the password clues, I type "ENERGY," and the door unlocks.

Durum!

Entering the experimental lab, we notice that in the middle of it, there's an experimentation table with a simulation of a space-time distortion caused by the third energy.

"What the heck is that?" Regina exclaims with curiosity as she approaches the experimentation table. Standing by her side, I explain, "This, dear, is a simulation of the space-time distortion caused by the third energy. This is what led to the dinosaurs entering our time."

As I watch Regina start to read some notes, I quietly approach the terminal, and without her noticing, I insert a USB that automatically begins transferring the third energy data.

[Regina POV]

I'm usually very distant with people I've just met, but that doesn't apply to Axel. Maybe it's because he saved me or because we met in a special situation, but I can joke with him as if we've known each other for years... It's strange.

I was really worried when I saw him being attacked by a velociraptor, but thanks to my character and training, I didn't panic and managed to save him.

When we reached the experimental lab, it was strange to see the simulation of the space-time distortion caused by the third energy, and from what Axel mentioned, it's what caused this whole disaster. While Axel was admiring the simulation, I decided to investigate and look for Dr. Kirk or a clue that might lead me to him.

There was one document that caught my attention, especially the part that read: "The area affected by excess energy is estimated to reach a radius of 1100 meters. The results of tonight's experiment may please the military in one aspect. The giant creatures that emerged after the experiment have inspired me a lot."

The most important thing now is to get out of here without any issues. As soon as I finish analyzing the data, I'll head down to the lower floor.

"Axel was right; Dr. Kirk's experiment caused this whole disaster. Plus, I've already found a clue about where Kirk might be." Muttering to myself, I decide to leave the lab.

[Axel POV]

Collecting the USB, I see Regina approaching me. "Kirk isn't here; it's better if we leave. Come with me; it's time to keep you safe." Nodding my head, I've got what I need now. 

I just have to get off this island, and being with Regina's team will increase our chances of getting out. If by any chance, the T-rex attack the helicopter, I've got a Plan B.

As we leave the lab, we run into Gail, who was sitting at one of the computers. When Regina sees him, she approaches him. "Kirk isn't in the lab." Frustrated, Gail exclaims, "How? ... This operation is taking way too long."

At that precise moment, an alarm sounds.

"<Alert: Emergency system deactivated, beginning emergency lockdown>"

"Ay dios!( Oh my god), give me a break," I mutter to myself.
