Starred Up

Deen, a seven year old boy, arrives in Korea with his mother Mia. With a strong determination to raise her son properly, Mia ensures Deen lacks no love in his life. In her spare time, Mia is a huge fangirl of the Korean boy group, TNT. But in an unexpected twist of fate, the mother-son duo end up being the neighbors of D3, another legendary boy group, which happens to be TNT's biggest rival. D3 consists of the short tempered Taewon, gentle Joon Jae and the goofy Jan. On top of that, Mia is hired as the personal designer for TNT, which consists of the charismatic leader Soo-Yon and the playboy maknae Cheng. Despite the rocky start, Mia and her son grow closer to all the members of both the groups. With time, the members realize they have fallen in love with the same woman, disrupting each group's dynamics. Furthermore, the origins of the hostility between the two groups resurface, making everyone involved question the decision they made a decade ago. As secrets unfold, the members vie for Mia's affections, Deen observes that she has eyes only for one of them. But which one of them will she choose? 'Mee!'

A small child came running towards Mia. Cheng and I were inside the micro van. We did not dare to get out, in case if it caused a commotion in the school. Instead we sat in the car, looking at the child running towards his mother. Mia scooped him up into her arms and gave him a tight hug.

'Aww that kid is really cute,' I smiled. 'He is gonna break some hearts when he grows up.'

'He sure is a chick magnet,' Cheng agreed. 'Oh look. He already has a girlfriend.'

He was pointing at a little girl standing beside the boy. Mia knelt down and talked to her for a while before the girl waved them goodbye. They turned and walked towards the car.

'Hello,' the kid greeted us as soon as he saw us. He did not seem fazed by two good looking idols sitting in a car, waiting for him.

'Hi kiddo,' I smiled at him.

'Hi,' Cheng waved at him. 'Come sit beside me.'

'Ahh, he can sit with me in the front,' Mia said.

'Mia, your kid got the chance to sit with Korea's two most beloved idols,' Cheng boasted. 'People would kill for this opportunity. Don't take it away from him! Kid come here.'

He excitedly made way for the child. The boy looked at Mia.

'Am I being kidnapped by your idols?' he asked her.

'He won't stop blabbing until you sit with him,' Mia conceded. 'It's okay, I'm sitting in the front anyway. Besides, they are really nice.'

'You're saying that coz they are your idols,' the kid said cheekily. 'You've been fangirling over them even before I was born!'

Cheng and I burst into laughter.

'Ooh busted,' Cheng teased. Mia blushed.

'Just sit!' she ordered, still red in the face.

The kid climbed into the car, settling between me and Cheng. Mia got into the front seat.

'So what's your name?' I asked.

'Deen,' the kid replied.

'Aww that's a cute name,' Cheng complimented. 'What does it mean?'

'I don't know,' Deen said.

'Yo Mia!' Cheng called out to the front. 'What's the meaning of Deen's name?'

'God's gift in Arabic,' she answered.

'Woah, our Deen has a wonderful name,' I complimented. 'What did you learn at school today?'

'We had a test on multiplication tables,' Deen recalled. 'Then we read a story. The story of Kong...kongwi and patti?'

'Kongjwi and Patjwi,' Cheng corrected.

'Yes, that one,' Deen said. 'But I got the highest on the Math test.'

He beamed proudly.

'Wow you're a genius!' I said, patting his head.

'Yeah my man, gimme five,' Cheng raised his hand. The kid gave him a hi5. Suddenly, Deen's stomach growled. He clutched his stomach, a little red in the face. I took out a McDonald's packet.

'Deen, you must be hungry,' I said. 'We grabbed you some lunch. Do you like burgers?'

Deen nodded enthusiastically and took the packet, thanking me.

'Would you like some cola?' Cheng offered.

'Thank you, but Mee doesn't let me drink cola,' Deen said. 'Says it's harmful to the body.'

'Oh come on,' Cheng scoffed, taking a sip from a soda can. 'Everyone drinks cola.'

'Not my mother,' Deen said. 'She cleans the toilet with it. And it works better than other chemical cleaners. If that thing is powerful enough to clean the poo from toilets, then imagine what it does in our bodies.'

Cheng choked on his cola. I started to laugh again. I was sure Cheng would never touch another cola as long as he lived.
