Chapter 73: Slandering the Wife of the Devil

The next day, Zarah woke up from her phone's constant ringing.

With her eyes closed, she stretched her hand to reach for her phone which she thought she had placed on the nightstand.

However, she could not find it and so she opened her eyes to look for it.

She saw her phone on the edge of her nightstand.

She grabbed it and looked at the phone screen and saw Hope calling. However, she frowned when she saw what time it was. It was already nine in the morning. She only had an hour for her morning class.

She looked at the space beside her and found it empty. She found a note which said, "read me" together with the folded white paper placed on top of the nightstand and it was Xavier's handwriting.

The phone stopped ringing and so she decided to read the letter first.

[Good morning my wife, Mrs. Lockhart,]

[I tried to wake you up however you were sleeping soundly when I left so I dared not to wake you up. I also instructed Julie to not disturb you. As for me, I have to go on a business trip for two days. I'll be back before you know it. Elliott will be helping you with company matters.]

[Wait for me, mon amour. I'll be there before you know it. I love you.]

[My heart will always be yours,]

[Mr. Lockhart, Husband]

Zarah giggled after she finished reading the letter.

Her phone started ringing again and it was Xavier who was calling this time.

Zarah picked it up and his baritone voice sounded on the other end of the line.

"Did I wake you up?" he asked.

"Nope. I'm already awake when you called. Where are you now?"

"I'm still at the office. I'm finishing something before I left for the business trip."

"What time will you be leaving?"

"Eleven, mon amour. I'm sorry that I'm not there when you woke up. Don't worry, I'll fix my schedule so we could spend a lot of time together."

Zarah should be glad to hear this from him. However, she knew how important his position in the company was.

"You don't have to do that, husband. I know how busy your schedule is as the Chairman and CEO of the provoked."

"Don't worry mon amour. I have a few trusted subordinates whom I trusted to do some of my workloads for me."

"Then, I feel sorry for them," Zarah said with a sigh.

"It's fine. I'll increase their pay and give them a bonus to compensate them."

"Then count me in. I am your partner-in-crime now." Xavier chuckled because of Zarah's cheesiness.

"Of course. However, I'd rather see you counting the money I earned rather than see you working hard at the company."

Xavier wanted to pamper her for life. He did not like to see her become exhausted because of work during the day.

After all, she had another role to fulfill at night.

However, he knew that Zarah would not agree to it. She was an independent woman who would want to have her income and not rely on her husband.

"Are you serious? I can't do that. Husband, I sincerely appreciate your intention. However, I want to have my means, too. I want to help you. Don't you know that I'm capable of multitasking?"

"I never doubted your capabilities, mon amour."

He knew that Zarah was very talented and she had endless opportunities waiting ahead of her.

He had already made this decision to support her in everything rather than caging her in and stopping her growth.

He had already accepted that he married a career-driven woman.

Nevertheless, he felt worried for her health.

"I can be a student during the day. Your assistant during the afternoon and your wife at night," Zarah added to support what she said.

"I know. If you feel tired, don't hesitate to slow down. I'll be there to back you up." Xavier sweetly said and she could feel her heart melting from his warmth.

Zarah suddenly yawned and he heard that.

"Sleepy?"

"Yes, and tired. However, it's fine."

"No. Go back to sleep and rest. You only had four hours of sleep. It's not good."

Zarah clicked her tongue after hearing it. Was he deliberately trying to tease her?

"Whose fault is it, then? Last night, you didn't stop until I passed out," she said annoyed.

Last night, they'd done multiple rounds and it exhausted her to the bone. She was not complaining though as it was amazing every time they climaxed together. However, she underestimated Xavier's stamina. He was like a monster in bed.

He went on and on until she passed out from exhaustion.

She looked down and saw that she was dressed in her pajamas and so she thought that perhaps Xavier helped her get changed into her pajama.

She had no idea what happened after she passed out.

"I'm sorry. I admit that I got a little overboard and got selfish. Don't worry, I'll reflect on my mistake and I promise that I'll not see it again."

Upon hearing his sincerity, Zarah felt bad and was no longer upset. She could no longer recall why she was upset.

Perhaps because Xavier left before she woke up. Or perhaps because he was back to his normal routine while she was still stuck in the bed with soreness down there.

Although she did not feel body pain, she felt very exhausted. Four hours of sleep was not enough for her to recover her strength.

"It's fine. Anyways. Do make sure that you're well-rested on this trip. I don't know where you're heading but since you're going on a plane, take a nap during the flight."

"I'll be going to Country E, mon amour. And don't worry, I'll take your reminder to heart."

"You better do it or else, I'll be upset."

Xavier chuckled as he found this cute. He never thought that having someone to care for him felt so good.

"I promise. Anyways, I should get going now."

"Message me when you're boarding and also when the airplane land."

"Don't worry, I will. I love you, mon amour."

"I love you too, husband. Take care."

"Of course, I will." Now that his wife was waiting for him to come home safely, he dared not to be reckless with his actions.

Zarah looked at the time and she now had thirty minutes before her first period at school. She had to hurry or else she would be late.

She hastily got up in bed but when her legs reached the floor, she felt her legs turn like jelly and she almost fell on the floor.

"Xavier! You dummy!" she could only curse her husband for this misfortune.

Meanwhile, Xavier was busy signing and reading the documents at the same time.

He received a message from Julie that Zarah was limping while walking.

He felt sorry for his wife and so he decided to order a bouquet of sunflowers and a separate bouquet of red roses and have them delivered to her university.

After settling the bill, he went back to what he was doing.

Zarah managed to reach the university on time.

She wore a turtleneck to hide the kiss marks that Xavier had left on her neck. Good thing it was already autumn and the weather was cold.

Good thing she managed to walk normally when she reached the school grounds.

The pain in her intimate area was still there but it was better than when she woke up this morning.

Zarah noticed that the students were strangely looking at her when she entered the campus.

She saw them looking at their phones and then at her when she was passing by.

However, this was something that was not new as this happened a lot to her. And so, she decided to ignore them.

She saw Hope who was waiting anxiously at the bench and was reading something on her phone and so she decided to call her, "Hope!"

Hope looked at her and then the latter hurriedly approached her.

"Sister!"

"What's wrong? Why are you upset?"

Hope didn't say a word but instead, she handed her phone to Zarah to read it herself.

The article was posted in their university forum and a photo bannered the article with the title," Silver Oak University's Top Student Was Seen Together With an Old Man; Sugar Daddy, Confirmed?"

Zarah and a middle-aged man were shown in the photo. Another photo showed that she entered the car.

The face of the man was blurred intentionally but the hair was not and so his age was evident based on the streak of gray hairs on his head.

Zarah's expression darkened when she read the article.

Zarah realized that the photo was secretly taken yesterday and the man was none other than Joseph Lockhart.

The photo was taken in an ambiguous position that showed they were about to kiss.

Zarah wanted to puke because of how creative they were in ruining her image. They deserved a standing ovation and a letter of recommendation to be a screenwriter for a drama on TV.

Then, a smirk flashed on her lips. She had an idea of who was behind this.

'They wanted to play this game, so be it,' she thought.

As she thought of ways to get back to them, she became calm.

She was holding back herself because she cared about Isaiah's feelings a lot. She did not want to upset him for any misbehavior.

Now that Isaiah was dead, she no longer cared.

She would just reason with him when they met each other. Hopefully not so soon.

Zarah returned the phone to Hope and then she walked away.

"Sister!" Hope was worried for her sister. Although the face of the man was blurred, she didn't believe anything that was written in the article.

Zarah turned around and asked, "Do you trust me?"

"Of course!"

"Then that's all that matters. See you at lunch. I'm running late with my class."

Zarah then waved her hand to bid farewell and shoved them inside the pockets of her coat.

Xavier also learned about the article and he was curious about how Zarah would solve this.

He was waiting for her call but it didn't come and so, he thought that she could solve this on her own.

"I trust my wife, Rupert," he told his assistant who was anxious and worried for Zarah after he read the article.

Of course, he would not let the person behind this unscathed.

"Ask Jackson to investigate this matter."

Jackson who was in a meeting with his subordinates frowned when he heard a phone ringing.

"Whose phone is ringing?" he asked but they awkwardly looked at him.

"Sir, I think it's your phone," his subordinate told him and so he checked his phone and saw Rupert's name on the screen.

"Five minutes break," he announced before he left the room to answer the call.

"Rupert, did something happen to the Missus?"

"How did you know?"

"It's just a guess but it seems I'm correct."

"Someone's courting death by slandering Zarah's name."

Rupert then gave Jackson the link to the article and he chuckled after reading it.

"Okay. I know what to do. I'll email my findings after an hour."

This was considered a petty task for him. There was no need to use their intelligence for this.

"Master will expect your report then."

Rupert then ended the call and Jackson shook his head.

"Did something happen, Commissioner?"

"It's none of your concern, Officer," he said and walked back to the room.

Jackson thought that Xavier's means of punishing people had changed now that he was married to Zarah. He softened a little which might not be good for Xavier in the long run.

He knew how ruthless Xavier was with his enemies. Rupert was right, the person was courting death for slandering the wife of the devil.

Xavier hummed in response after the call ended.

He then prepared to leave for the business trip.

"Let's go! "

"Yes, Master!"
