“Yeah. They’d just moved into their current home, and the old house was rented out. My dad shot one of the tenants, and the other one shot and killed Dad.”
“That happened right before Bobby and I met,” Chad said, “and it was a wild ride for a while, let me tell you.”
The sudden shift to the subject of unforgiving families prompted Nate to relate the story of his kidnapping and rescue by me, and he and Bobby spent a few minutes swapping horror stories about their respective families. I looked at Chad, and he shrugged, as if to say, “What can you do?”
After a while, I said, “Okay, guys, can we switch the conversation to a happier note?”
“Yeah,” Chad said. “Please?”
We really enjoyed our visit, and it was quite late when we headed back down the mountain. Nate summed the evening up, saying, “Too bad those guys are moving to Gainesville. I’d enjoy going to a movie or something with them back home.”
