Chapter 40

“Nate,” I said, “what’s your home address?”

He gave it to me and asked why I wanted to know.

“Move that chair around beside me and look at this,” I said.

“What am I looking at?” he said once we were side by side.

“The Orange County Property Appraiser’s website. It looks like your house isn’t owned by your mother and stepfather.”

“It isn’t?”

“See for yourself—it’s still owned by some sort of trust set up for your late father. How long has he been dead?”

“Ten years. But what does this mean?”

“It means that as soon as I finish the job I came to this area to do, we’re gonna go to Orlando.”

“I don’t ever want to go back to Orlando.”

“That’s understandable, but I want to take a look at the probate file in the Orange County Courthouse.”

“I don’t understand.”
