"Because I was the one who asked Chief Kim to send you here..." Those words rang in her ears like an annoying siren. Her blood boils as steaming-hot anger rushes through her veins. "You asked him what?!" she exclaimed.
Her eyebrows lift in confusion, demanding answers after his statement. " Well, I'm just helping. Either drop the case or get help from us and capture the Fox."
The room fell into a deep silence for a moment, no one daring to breathe through the thick tension surrounding them like a fog. "I can do it on my own," Yeomji states, quickly earning a snicker from Doha.
"Oh really? Is that why even they want you to drop the case?" He argues back. The bomb that Doha dropped totally damaged Yeomji's pride and ego, offending her. It wasn't his pure intention to hurt her, he only wanted her to wake into reality.
"Just admit it. I know you can capture the Fox, but not alone. That man is a psychopath." Trying to lift the mood, assuring her they both have the same intentions in the end. "He's right, we're not here to judge you but to work together and get that psychopath." Jaehyuk backs their leader up.
To this point, she only has minor reasons to not believe them. Yeomji just need to stay still till the end of this case and they can all have peace and part ways, something they probably also want as soon as possible.
"Now, if you don't mind, walk us into all the information you gathered in almost a year." The guys walked her into the meeting room while Doha walked behind her like a shadow. An old habit of his that reminded her of his comfort and the good old past.
Soon after entering the room, the worn-out box of evidence she gathered for a long time immediately got her attention. Yeomji wasn't aware that someone had already moved it here before telling her, but it seems like Taebin is really full of surprises.
As she watches the members go to their proper seats, leaving her the only person standing up. She pulls out all the major evidence to introduce them to the case and its victims for the past year. "The Fox. He isn't a typical criminal, but just a pure sadist and psychopath, meaning he doesn't have a killing pattern." She asserts.
Her voice and her explanation somewhat gave most of them chills down their spine. They've heard about how serious this case is, but now seeing it in front of them is still new and foreign to them. "Are you sure there isn't?" Sungho questions.
A case like this doesn't always scare everyone but also intrigues some, liking the challenge of a fresh case gives on the table. "I've looked into it countless of times but none..." Yeomji assures she wasn't just slacking around and making dumb conclusions.
"There must be at least something that caught your attention on the victim list." Jaehyuk queries. She lets out a sigh after failing to get the trust she expected to gain. Trying to be more truthful, both to them and herself this time. "There is, he killed 4 or 5 people that have criminal records." Yeomji reveals the few loose ends hanging out in the case.
This information fed everyone excitement in them, mostly Sungho. "Then there is..." This is a new challenge for everyone and probably a level up to anything they've done in the past. As dangerous as the case might be and their principle is to protect the citizens, another reason they chose this job is for the thrill that comes along with it.
"He probably knew about them. Did you check if there's anything suspicious about the other victims?" Doha asks. " I did, but there's nothing really seemed-" Not letting Yeomji finish to explain herself, Yohan lays his hypothesis. "Or they're still not caught by the law? I mean, there are many people that get away from their crimes"
"What are you talking about?" Jaehyuk queries. A question that everyone is asking in their heads, including Yeomji. "This..." He slips the photo in front of everyone that he got inside the files and information she gathered neatly.
"He's a famous surgeon, recently had a scandal about receiving money under the table, but all of those allegations disappeared. This guy was also hooked on our old case. We did nothing about it 'cause we lacked evidence to prove it." Those details made them quickly remember what case he was referring to.
This speculation is enough to create another conclusion for everyone. "Then there must be a pattern..." But Doha immediately pushed this away, keeping the balance of the case. "We're still not sure about that, what about the other victims? Not all victims could have criminal records or have done something bad. It's always to remember to keep an open mind when solving cases and not only to stick to one hypothesis."
He's right, there was nothing suspicious about the other remaining victims, so they might be also wrong about it. Now that they also get deep into the case, the more they also understand how complex could this be.
"Let's end it for today and gather more information we can in the meantime..." Doha dismissed the meeting after noticing how fast the time flew by while they were inside the office and around the evidence.
Everyone bids their goodbyes to each other and finally left. That also goes the same to Yeomji, she immediately left as soon as she could as she tries to avoid interacting with someone specific. She was about to enter her car when she suddenly heard her name being called out.
That voice. She right away recognized his voice, how could she forget? "Yeomji..." Her name fell out of his lips so smoothly, like old times. She whiffles those thoughts away and questions him. "Do you need anything?"
She tries her best to sound nice, even after what happened earlier. But even how much she tries, the bitterness behind her words is still prominent for him to notice. "About earlier..." That slight pause was enough for her to overthink things again and what he was about to say next.
"About what I said earlier. I'm sorry, I didn't wanna sound harsh." Doha tries to explain, but she quickly cut it short and assures things out. "Ah! Don't worry about it. It wasn't like you were lying or anything, but you don't know everything about me anymore, Yoon Doha..." she harshly retorts back.
He didn't want to stay in front of her for long as he also feels that she also wants the same. Doha kept her for too long since the awkward silence between them just grows longer. "Welcome to the team again. Have a great evening..."
A small smile curved to her lips before giving a slight bow. He didn't wait for her to drive away and just start walking away. Meanwhile, she watches him leave before entering her car to drive home.
