In Chandler's house, they used to combat, ambush, and long-range shooting as their main teaching. But there're three fundamental concepts of controlling the dominions. Outer, inner, and equidistant. 

General people used an inner dominion that controlled the dominion to make them stronger. Inner dominion can be manifested inside their weapon and made the weapon stronger and easier to wield.

The outer dominion was used by magicians and alchemists. They were the expert in making shields. They coated their dominion around their weapon and made it stronger separately. They didn't have to get stronger, unlike the other one.
