CHAPTER 4: Mixed emotions

I turned my gaze to the undead on my right, it didn't take me long to swing my hand and hit it's throat, I immediately sliced it's head clean off and blood was spraying all over it's neck as it fell down without a head.

I instantly pulled Layla's hand forcing her to stand up. The undead which was behind her met the same fate, a kick to the torso to make it loose balance and I brutally hit it in the back of it's head when it was bent.

Layla let out a yelp and rushed to grasp my left arm.

"Let's go." I whisperd in her ear.

She regained from her shock after watching the gruesome fight with wide eyes.

Every path was now blocked by the undead, I kept glancing around to find a way out. When I titled my head on the left side I locked eyes with the cannibal. It's mouth dripping with blood from the previous dinner.

My blood froze as cold sweat ran down my spine.

I signalled Layla to run but she tucked on my right arm and didn't move, I felt her body trembling.

It was ready to run straight at us and attack. In that moment we where blessed with extreme luck.

The undead surrounded the cannibal and started to attack, a plan popped in my head, I threw the axe and banged the glass door which was behind the cannibal.

It shuttered creating a loud noise and captured every undead's attention.

We then waiting for an opportunity, while the undead dragged their feet to where the sound came, the damn thing was shockingly powerful. It was able to keep up with a horde of zombies alone.

"let's go this is our chance."

Layla weakly nodded.

She tried to stand before her face flinched and almost fell, luckily I caught her.

Layla stared at me with a pained expression. "I injured my ankle when I fell."

I just nodded and carried her in the legendary princess style, she unconsciously wrapped her arms around my neck.

I immediately paced out of the assembly hall, the classrooms weren't far, I made it in no time even with the extra weight.

I tried pulling the door knob but it wouldn't budge, I banged the door hard while yelling for someone to open.

After an eternity.... although it was for a few seconds when running for your life time react differently, I heard pulling of chairs and desks which looked like where used to barricade the door. A clicking sound was heard and Ace opened the door a little and we then slipped inside.

I looked around the class and they where only Ace, Freya, Isla, Murphy and Dexter, so we where seven in number including me and Layla.

"Look at that the lovers have finally joined us." Dexter mocked while swinging back and forth in a chair with his legs on the desk infront.

'This guy is fucking annoying.'

Everyone looked hopeless, no one wanted to talk. Freya was sitting on her desk looking like she might cry any time, her hands coverd her face while Murphy leaned on the wall looking up with his eyes closed and Isla was staring outside the window.

I took Layla to the teacher's table and stretched her ankle for a couple of times.

"Does it still hurt."

"I'm feeling better now, thank you for saving me back there, I wouldn't be here if it wasn't for you."

I sat next to her and wiped the tears on her cheeks with my thumbs.

"you know I will go against the world for you." I replied with a cheeky smile.

Layla hugged me tightly and sobbed on my chest, I kept consoling her.

She stayed in my embrace for a few minutes, there was still silence in the room until Murphy broke it with an uncontrollable cough.

We all turned to him.

Not long he's skin became pale by the second and the veins on his body started to appear black. Everyone was now observing him curiously.

"Hey dude are you okay?" Ace asked him.

Before he could answer Murphy began coughing large amounts of blood, he held his chest with a pained expression.

Ace immediately supported his arm to help him sit on the desk nearby.

"I have been beaten earlier on my ankle, I think that's the reason I'm getting sick ."

Everyone surrounded Murphy glaring at him with pity.

"Don't worry you are going to be fine". Ace consoled him

Dexter spoke while looking at Ace. " We don't need a genius to tell us what will happen to him, he's going to turn too."

"I think you should keep your mouth tight if you have nothing worth hearing.

*cough. "Dexter is ri–right, but I don't want to be one of them, so please kill me now before that happens."

We stared at each other with worry but no one dared to talk. I was never friends with Murphy, but seeing one of your classmates in this condition was really frightening.

All we could do was gather around him.

"I figured this will happen, Kean! take good care of Layla, and I know you are strong, protect her. Don't make the same mistake I did."

He coughed another mouthful of blood. I just gave him a feint smile.

"Don't worry about us, we are all going to try and survive in this cruel world."

Murphy's eyes were already turning blood red.

He got off the desk and walked to the nearest window.

I started guessing what Murphy was thinking, our classroom was on the second floor.

Murphy opening the window, cool wind instantly caressed his black hair.

He turned his head to us. "It was nice knowing you all, please survive and don't lose hope."

He jumped out, in mare seconds we heard a thud sound outside, and more loud growling came from the window.

I felt goosebumps in my body.

Everyone returned to their sit quietly without uttering a word. It was as if we where honouring his death, or were we?
