The Story of Genes!

Ring!

An odd sound rang in the room. Link woke up, looking around.

"What was that?" He mumbled to himself.

<Did you not listen to that Man, this is the alarm, your group is supposed to meet up in front of the dorms, hurry and get ready>

"Argh" Link grunted. After getting ready he went downstairs, bumping into some other students he recognized from last night.

"Good morning" One of the 2 students waved at Link "We'll be classmates i presume, my name is Tom and this is Fei we live near each other." Said Tom, pointing at the Room next to Link's.

"Yeah, Hi. I'm Link, nice to meet you"

Link, Tom and Fei headed down together as they chatted. Link managed to learn that Tom is a Commoner from a town called Tounia, which is not far from Link's Village, it's known for the Magic Stone Mines in the mountains near it. Fei on the other hand is the son of an adventurer, he saved the life of an important person, which resulted in a reward of his own choosing. He managed to get Fei in the Military Academy.

They reached the main hall, there was a crowd of students waiting for Tommy.

Link, Tom and Fei noticed that the groups were separated in an interesting way, as one would expect, what looked like sons of nobles with their fancy robes and clothes stood together in groups separated from the students with average clothes. And even in both these separated groups was another hierarchy between them, the Nobles with more powerful parents stood together separated from the rest of the Nobles, while the Commoners did the same.

"How ignorant" Fei muttered.

Link nodded, he couldn't agree more. Back in his world and in this one people treated each other depending on social standing, like they are different because their parents own more land or make more money.

Link was not surprised seeing this though, it was human nature.

If you find a man with nothing to his name, with people looking down on him all the time, he'll know and hate the hierarchy, but when you give him money and power, and he sees that people were afraid or respectful to him, he'll slowly change, revealing his other side and unconsciously start to be repulsed from the people that are beneath him.

Link's group stood by themselves to the side, they talked trying to know more about each other.

After 20 minutes, the Hall was full. No more students came down.

"Alright, Now that everyone is here, how about we get started." Tommy appeared out of nowhere in the middle of the Hall, He continued "All of you will start your studies in two days, so until then i will be showing you around"

Tommy started walking towards the door, so everyone followed him. As they left the Dorms everyone was excited, the curiosity about this place was killing them.

They walked around the place following Tommy as he explained what everything was, he named and showed the way around so students can go back and forth without any issues.

Link understood that this was not a real town, Tommy explained. From the shop keepers, the cleaners all the way to animals flying around and jumping about were staff. It was an unbelievable thing to hear, especially about the animals, but Tommy waved his hand and a cross between an eagle and a crow landed on his hand. To the surprise of some it spoke.

"Hello freshman, welcome." The Eagle/Crow thing spoke "My name is Pilo and i'm the overseer of the Creatures around, i hope you all work hard and manage to reach your second and third years" When he finished speaking Pilo flew away.

The students frowned upon hearing the last thing it said, so they asked Tommy.

"If things were easy and everyone managed to pass, this wouldn't be the best Academy in the kingdom, you'll slowly come to understand what makes this place special and unique" Tommy started walking again, continuing his tour.

The town looked oddly advanced, Link could see street lamps, store signs that light up and even vehicles. Tommy explained that everything is run by Magic or Magic stones. Different from the Cores found in Magical Beasts, these are made of pure Mana found naturally, they are mostly found in Mines or if you're lucky they might be also found in the ground, they are very useful and can be put to use by anybody.

Tommy stopped in front of a huge building, it looked like a castle from the medieval era, the place gave off a mysterious aura suppressing all who dare even think of defying the set rules.

"This will be where classes are held. The tour will stop here, when it is time for classes you'll be provided with a Map of the facility" Said Tommy as he faced the students.

"Sir" A short girl with brown hair spoke "Why is the castle not a part of the tour? It looks huge. How are we supposed to find our way around with just a Map?" She asked.

"If one is unable to find his or her way around even with a detailed Map, then they should change their career path." Said Tommy with a smile.

...

After leading the students back to the entrance of the dorms, Tommy vanished, leaving everyone to do their own thing.

"Want to go to the library?" Tom asked, he looked at both Link and Fei.

"I'm down" Said Fei

"Me too," Link added

Since the Tour, the students each went around the town. There were other students around as well, but for some reason they ignored all the freshmen. It was odd but everyone just moved on.

"We're here" Tom pointed at a 5 story tall building, it had a sign above its entrance with the words Library written beautifully.

The trio wanted to check what kind of knowledge was available to them in a wondrous place like this. As they entered, the Library only had a few people inside, at the main desk a gorgeous woman sat typing away at what Link could only guess was a Computer, or this world's version of one.

A sign was hung near the desk with the rules. The one that Link found interesting other than your typical Library rules was that for each floor only some are allowed in.

The first floor belongs to all students, while the second is for second year students and up. You can guess the rest, the building reaches up to 5 floors.

They found an empty table and they sat down, when suddenly a transparent thin barrier covered the three of them, or to be more precise their whole table was covered.

"What is that?" Asked Link.

"It's called a Soof, an imprint command was set up in each table to activate a sound proof barrier. So we can make as much noise as we want as long as we're within its boundaries." Tom explained, he stood up and spoke "I'm going to look around for a bit, we'll meet back here"

Even though the three of them were bound by the first floor, it was still a huge place. From Link's vision he was unable to see the end of all the books.

"Let's go too!" Said Fei as he stood up himself.

Link started looking around, going from bookshelf to another.

"The Legendary Ring" Link read one of the book's titles, finding the name interesting "My Life as a Psychopath" He read another.

<You're in the tales section, move to the other shelves>

As Link was browsing, he found a book that caught his eye. It was old, with the leather cover slowly losing to age, the bookshelf was mostly empty, having the old book and 2 more books that Link could not understand the language they were written in.

"The Story of Genes" He read the title out loud, reaching to grab it.

"You're wasting your time" A feminine voice spoke near Link, he was surprised. Looking around, he found a blond pretty girl looking at him, Link recognized her from when he woke up, she was one of the few in which was calm after waking up back then.

"What do you mean wasting my time?" He asked, frowning.

"The book was discovered in some Dungeon and no one managed to learn the technique in it, so the staff decided to throw it down here. It was not hard to learn or anything logical like that, but for some reason all instructions made no sense." She explained, looking at the book on the shelf.

"Why did they not throw it away if it's useless?" Link asked.

"Like i said, it contains some kind of technique or skill though undiscovered yet. Someone might come and manage to learn something from it, but now it is left there mostly because it was forgotten." She answered

"Ok, thanks for the heads up" Link smiled at her, he didn't know why she would approach him but he appreciated the information.

"Yeah" After a brief nod she walked away, Link stared at her for a bit.

"What an odd girl" He muttered to himself.

Link still wanted to check out the book, he reached out and grabbed it.

<Skill book discovered> <Learn? Yes/No>

"What?" Link was surprised, his system did not react to books since it changed, but now a message like this appeared.

"Zero, explain please" He frowned.

<There are certain conditions the book must have for the system to react to it, this book met them and the system was allowed to learn from it>

Link stopped for a bit, then pressed Yes. He wasn't going to refuse a free new skill is he? The familiar message appeared again, giving Link the feeling of nostalgia.

<Recording …>

"It has been a long time hasn't it? I miss you" Said Link, Thinking of his Mother and his Sister.
