Chapter 6: The One Living Below Part 2

The zombie quickly snapped its gaze away from the sky. I quickly got tense. It's head tried to look around.

I remain in my position. I didn't try to make any sudden move. The zombie might give away our position if it sees me.

"Rarrgh, reergh"

The soft noises it made gave a little anxiety. I hope the big one doesn't have sensitive hearing. Cuz' if it does...I don't even wanna think about it.

My thoughts came to an abrupt stop when it's head gazes on my direction.

I got tense. It look towards me like a new born child trying to see something in me.

No, no. Please don't make a sound. Please don't make a sound. Please, for the love of all that it's holy, DONT MAKE A SOUND!

...

It looks to me for a few moment before resuming its gaze towards the sky.

...ok, I'm a little confused...why did it not crawl towards me? I look at the thick grasses in front of me and realize that it must have not notice me behind it.

...

I got lucky.

This grasses must have been too thick for its poor eyesight to look through.

I wonder what got it so mesmerized to the sky though. All I see from here are its grayish color. Perfectly mirroring the grim atmosphere of this land.

Whatever, I continued my pace later. I crawled slowly but now being vigilant for anything that may cause a sound.

It took awhile but I'm finally far enough from the zombie. I look onward and crawled again. I look towards with extreme vigilance. On my way through, I encountered numerous corpses. Each one is mutilated beyond recognition. Some, only has one of their body parts laying on the ground. This must have been the big one's leftovers. I saw people, crawlers, and sometimes new ones that I have never encountered before.

Who would have thought? Below the beautiful ocean of green are piles of rotten corpses of any kind. My clothes right now are stained with mud and any other filth. Some of the rotten flesh got stuck to my clothes but I didn't care. A little putrid stench and dirt are nothing compared to our survival. I look onward and saw some trees on the horizon. Looks like I'm nearing the end. I just have to keep moving...

...

"Scree!"

The monster...er I better give it a name or something. Hmm...what do I call it? Alright...I'll just call it Digger. The now named Digger suddenly went to my direction. Oh crap, how did it noticed me? I didn't make any sound. The Digger was now right above me. It's gigantic arms would give it quick movement like a chameleon.

"Scree!"

It screeched right above me. The noise echoed throught the place like a tidal wave. It seems to not notice me from below. Though that begs the question, did it come here. I couldn't see much of its head from here. I'm currently below its torso. I could see its hands from both sides. The hands are twice as big to my size. Enough to fully wrap my body.

I moved slowly to the back. Careful not to have it notice my presence. Ok, just a little-

My body went stiff when I saw the zombie from before, again. Crap.

My movement was heard and quickly threw its gaze away from the sky. This time, it finally noticed me. I can't belive my luck. With no other choice, I readed my ax to silence it. I quickly crawled towards it and raise my ax to kill it...

"Raaaargh!!"

Slash

My ax split the head in half but I didn't celebrate. I slowly look behind and saw the singular eye of the Digger looking right at me.

Crap

I was immediately launched a few feet from the ground. Courtesy of getting strike by its back hand. I quickly shifted my position to avoid the wooden bag getting the front impact of my fall.

Thud.

I dropped to the ground like a sack of potatoes but good thing my bag is unharmed. I look inside and saw Whity still sleeping quietly. Lucky guy.

I look at my self and saw that my other arm holding the ax was broken sideways. Great, just great. The ax was dropped the moment I was hit. I don't know where it went through because of this tall grasses.

But still, I have bigger things to worry about. I look at the Digger growling at me. It's singular eye, focusing on me.

I have no way of outrunning it, that's for sure. It's tall limbs would give it a huge advantage to quickly reach me.

I have no choice but to fight...

...

Alright then, I held my shotgun tightly. Sorry, Whity. This is gonna be a bumby ride. I pointed my shotgun at it and quickly fired. The bullet pierced through its skin like butter but it gave it no mind. After the attack, it raised its hand to retaliate in return. I rapidly ran to the side and fortunately avoided the strike. The impact shook the ground. I pointed my shotgun at it again and fired right at its right shoulder. The bullet pierced the skin but like before, it just ignored the pain.

Great, how do I kill this thing? I narrowly dodged its second attack and fired at it again. The same thing happened all over. I gritted the undead teeth in frustration. It must have a weakness but where? The Digger then dug its right hand to the ground and grabbed a large chunk of soil.

It then throws the large soil right at me. I ran to the side and could fill the impact to the ground. It took a good part of the grassy field.

I saw the Digger doing the same thing again. Alright punk. Bring it on. The once beautiful field is now filled with holes and scattered rocks and soil. Each impact causes a tremor to the ground. I dodged like I've never dodged before. I have little time to reload as it is and I'm quickly running out of bullets.

It's singular eye, looking at me with mild amusement as the behemoth continued to rain rocks and soil at me.

Seeing my bullets not working on the front torso, I tried to shoot every part that I didn't shot first. The arms didn't work, the hands are the same, I got on its back and fired right from above but still results the same...I'm running out of options. Still, there is one thing that I didn't shot and that's its singular eye. Not for the lack of trying though. It's just that everything I try, I have to quickly avoid its attack up close.

I have to make an opening.

"Screeeee!!"

It ran towards me. Shit! I tried to avoided but was tackled by its shoulder. It rose to the ground high up in the air. I saw the ground below us getting smaller from the height.

I shifted my sight to it's eye. Hehe. You just made a big mistake. I pointed my shotgun at it and fired...

Click.

...I forgot to reload. I quickly put my shotgun to the side and grab my ax but I didn't have time as I have to avoid its long tongue from taking a hold of me. The movement causes me to slide down from its back at a rapid pace. If I meet the ground at this speed, I'm doomed. Grabbing my ax, I slashed deep to the Digger's back. My action causes my rapid descend to the ground, slowly decrease.

I look at my side and saw one of its arms trying to grab me. I jumped and slashed deep to the forearm and hold on for dear life.

It raised its hand in the air and open its mouth. A long tongue came out and tried to wrap around me. I barely avoided it and landed right at its left shoulder but was shaken from my side by the small graze I've gotten from its attempt. I lost my grip of my ax during my landing and saw it fall to the ground.

Damn it! One of its hand tried to grab me again. I ducked but my broken arm was snatched. The force was so hard that it tore my arm from my shoulder.

Damn it all.

The situation is not looking good. At this rate, Whity and I will be monster food from this one. I saw the monster opened its mouth and greedily devoured my arm.

"Screeeee"

It seemed to take its time to enjoy the taste. With the unexpected distraction, I put my shotgun in my mouth and use my remaining arm to pull out some spare bullets.

One bullet.

Are you kidding me?

"Scree"

I look at the monster and saw it finally finishing its little meal. I quickly reloaded my shotgun and aimed at its singular eye.

Burn in hell.

Bang.

The eye exploded in blood. The Digger howled in pain. The arms quickly reach its head, trying to stop the blood from flowing. Meanwhile, I slowly slide down from its body till I reach the ground.

I ran a few distance from it and saw the Digger still screaming in pain. A few moments, it dropped to the ground and impact shook the land in great force...

It's finally over, right?
